Don Bosco gazed affectionately on the crowd of boys and said: "Let each of you earnestly endeavor to spend the new year in God's grace, because for one of you this may be the last year of his life. More precisely, one of you boys will go into eternity before the end of the carnival season."
Michael Magone wrote a short letter to Don Bosco while the priest was away from the Oratory in Rome. In this letter, he explained how the Blessed Virgin had made him hear her voice, calling him to be good. He explained that she wanted to teach him how to fear God, love Him and serve Him. Don Bosco believed his spiritual son, which is why I think he was a saint. If you would like to hear about the edifying death of a saintly young man, you should watch this two part series on how Don Bosco predicted the death of Michael Magone.

I thought there was a rule against touching the boys, was that only at specific times, or was John Bosco trusted because of his holiness?

He was talking about the far more serious practice of holding hands or walking about arm in arm, which was a common occurence apparently at that time between teachers and students. Many of the young clerics used to be Oratory boys themselves and were still pretty young to be put in charge as teachers. Hence, the rule. However, whenever he would place his hand on the head of a boy, it was considered as more of a blessing or a sign. He could cure people with the touch of his hand, if it fit with the plans of Divine Providence. It became so common, that crowds of people would flock to the Oratory door to be cured. He had to give people a novena so that the cure wouldn't be directly attributed to him. There are so many cases that he reminds me of the Savior Himself. So if he patted a boy on the head, or shook a boy's hand for a little longer than usual, the boy would attribute great spiritual meaning: rebuke, amendment of life or perhaps a sign that he was to die. It was for reasons far loftier than we could even conceive as confirmed by many Oratory boys: not just a passing sign of affection. In this case, it actually meant that Michael Magone would die soon as you will see in part 2 of this story.
