Baritone Peter Mattei sings the title character’s Act II aria, “Deh vieni alla finestra,” in an early rehearsal, accompanied by assistant conductor Jonathan C. Kelly. 2022-23 season.
I saw an ad for this on RU-vid yesterday, and I’ve seen this at least 10 times in the past day. I’ve never been to the Met, let alone seen an Opera performance, but Peter’s voice is pure magic. His gestures and body language are so natural and fluid, and he has such a strong command over the rehearsal space. I understand why he’s a world class caliber performer.
You too...! I saw/heard the ad, and was haunted by it for two or three days - until I found it and have listened to ...not quite a hundred times yet...but getting there!!!!
@@DeirdreMcNamarasame! This is the only RU-vid ad I’ve ever sought out to hear again lol instant goosebumps even now when I hear it, so absolutely breathtaking!
Not only is his voice the best, he expresses the words in Italian so perfectly it feels even more wonderful for one who speaks Italian to hear. Really brings the character to life. Bravo, che talento spettacolare.
Suo Papa e Italiano - there is a very sweet recording hereabouts of 5 year old Peter singing an aria to Mama...Papa must have taught it to him for his Mama's birthday. He is so adorable...hope to find more of the young Peter.
Peter has gold in his throat! He has been my favorite Giovanni, for singing and character, for many years. Here’s a little snippet of me playing the serenade! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pDt5nxO2VuI.html
Have you heard his Winterreise... Wow! I might faint if I heard it live... amazing...listen twenty times and it's as if you are hearing it for the first time...
I just booked to see this on the cinema in the UK -live. I can't wait. I have never heard his voice before and I am blessed to have the opportunity ro see and hear this production. What a sublime voice!
If you can get to Paris in September he's singing Don G at the Opera Bastille! Recordings pale in comparison to being in the same room as his voice. If only he'd perform in the UK more than once every 20 years...
@@EuskaltelEuskadi Not sure I would retain consciousness if I heard that beautiful voice live...Some excerpts from a Paris Opera Don G were quite offensive... Not Mattei, who transcended the nasty direction; it's time these gimmicky and politically motivated directors were put in their place. Opera is about the voice, the music, and, somewhere along the way, the storyline. As a dramatist I'm stepping on my own toes here...but I don't go to Operas to admire the sets!
Here is Peter Mattei singing the same serenade from 23 years ago. His voice hasn’t lost any of its golden luster. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-XlAq-f0Vaf8.html And here is another version, but you have to scroll to 1:31:10 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dUQ97faXC8M.html
Absolutely hypnotic. Who needs sets and directorial gimmicks when a performer of the calibre of Peter Mattei is on stage! His interpretations are incredible, but the voice is "da cielo" with such extraordinary emotional flexibility...that he can perform the same aria romantically on a special occasion but so seductively on stage /rehearsal. Winterreise is phenomenal...I can hear it a thousand times but find a new dimension each time... Bellissimo!
He is best Don Giovannie's singer imo. I buy tickets to Metopera's online cinema in my city. It is very pleasant event. Today it was Peter's Don Giovanni. You know, in full opera he is more mild and sweet. Oh, I think there in MetOpera's hall it is very other acoustics. And more feelings, whole environment, and fantastic casting. And perfect Lorenco!
Peter is 57, but his voice is as fresh as ever. This is an audio of him singing at age 5, a child. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jBAi8KC8SqM.html
Lasciati almen veder, mio bell'amore!
I'd even go back to New York to hear him in person. but quale voce!!! Silk is rough by comparison with the texture of that voice... mixed metaphors, who cares...hypnotic!
This is amazing... I prefer this rendition to Mattei's performance for the ? King and Queen of Sweden? Beautiful young dignatories, whoever they were. Why, I wondered... Then realised that he sang this as a "love song" to the Queen, on the King's behalf... He did not depict a predator or seducer, just a genuine love song. Here though, there's almost a serpentine quality to his movements...amazing...and of course the "timbre" and quality of THE VOICE changes as well...

Here's an idea. Forget the ghastly sets and the abusive stage direction, and let's just have the singers, on stage with minimal sets, just like this - so , half a million view in just three weeks! NOT "minimalist, angular communist nonsense," but the bare minimum in terms of requisite furniture and depictions of windows. In fact, don't even bother with that. Just put "THE VOICE" on Stage with the great cast and musicians - and conductor Stutzman certainly knows how to bring the best out of her singers... Hove will never direct one of my dramas - not after the evil he imposed on Don G... see the excerpt titled "Peter Mattei - Don Giovanni - Finale: Gia la mensa..." You see, you don't GO to the Met to see that level of ugly...it's "WAITING FOR YOU" on the NY Subway at the Lincoln Center stop when you leave, with glorious arias soaring in your mind and then... you step into the subway and ... Inferno! Now, back to Peter, "Andiam!!!"
That's a few years' experience rolled into one "brief" comment. In brief, just the SINGERS, the storyline, the bare set, and, of course, the MUSICIANS. At this level, only the Philistines need the fol de rol... Bravo, Mattei and accompanist!
@@papagen00 that's called a false binary, sweetie, we can have good singing and good acting, both, in fact we should demand it. Why would anyone actually ask for park and bark?? ludicrous!
@Marcel Audubon you're obviously new to opera and have not seen ridiculous productions where singers are asked to act in such ludicrous, even dangerous, ways as to hinder their ability to sing.
