Don Hunter's Holt tractor

Don Hunter's Holt tractor is a replica of a 1906 steam-powered crawler tractor. The only original part is the crankshaft; everything else Don scaled to size off some drawings and some pictures and manufactured everything else, except the boiler.
Don started this project after he retired. It took him roughly 8 years to complete (correction to my data at the end of the video)

I have seen this crawler up close an exact reproduction of the first Holt machine. The front wheel will turn but the tracks do have steering clutches. This was a innovation by Holt and used first on his wheeled machines. Later they found out that the front wheel was not needed, making the crawler design you see today. Holt merged with Bess to create Caterpillar tractors. This one is run with a steam engine as were the first ones until Holt started using gas engines. A fantastic build. Phil

Don has done a wonderful job replicating the original Holt crawler. I know he worked on building it for many years.

PriestmanCub Actually, it's a full-scale replica, not a restoration. However, the guy who built it told me several years ago at the Great Oregon Steam-Up that it does incorporate a few original Holt components that he was able to procure.

We have a couple pictures on the walls at the Cat dealer I work at, this looks very accurate to them, what a good job on re-creating one of the most important pieces of equipment ever devised. Holt / Best = Caterpillar, which changed, and still is, changing the world. No matter what company builds the machine, or what color it's painted, people call a bulldozer a "cat"

Incredible re-creation. Designed to operate on "Tule" soil that wouldn't support the weight of a team of horses, even with special large horseshoes. And they hadn't figured out how to steer a caterpillar machine by braking one track, hence the nose wheel.

I assume the vertical cylinder is the boiler. Seems to me there is very little clearance between the road and the bottom of the boiler. Going over a small bump could result in destroying the boiler and scalding the rider. Very impressive though.

What a strange creature this is! Never seen a traction engine like this in all my years at "Rough and Tumble" in Pa. I see a piston and a boiler so I have to assume it's steam but it's burning what? Oil or gas or kerosene? My neighbor needs some yard work done.... maybe I can rent you for a couple or hours? :)

The tracks do not turn at different speeds and do not turn the machine. The frontwheel turns the machine.

I don't understand how this machine turns. The two tracks are running at different speed, that is visible. That's how a tank would turn, but what on earth is that front wheel doing then? Someone please enlighten me :) Fascinating machine though!

Beautiful piece of machinery, Thank You! But one could see why Holt/Caterpillar went over to the IC engine in 1906. The steamer just does not have the horsepower. It's too slow and heavy and would be able to make it up even a slight grade with a load.

Obviously you've never witnessed a steamer at a tractor pull. They may be slow and heavy, and not rated very high in terms of horsepower, but they have a ton of torque and it's damn near impossible to stop one. Can't make it up a slight grade? They could climb a mountain if they could find traction.

@@reddirtfarm7704 Ah yes, Google, lets see. *Googles Holt steam tractor design plans* Hmm, articles on its history, neat, *scrolls down* more articles, *scrolls down* even more, hmm, still no plans. *Switches to image search* Ah, we got some general elevation drawings, and that's about it. Google is a great tool, but you often need specific key words in order to find specific information, such as the website name that contains the plans, _if_ they're even online. Thank you for this brilliant revelation after 12 years.

Knowing my luck, I'd stall the engine, and then fall backwards into the gear behind the driver, then roll off onto the ground to be ran over by the plow :).

No is not oil is steam. The front wheel is about 30 in. Dia. En 4 wide w/ holes on center and then you stick a long round bar and fire up the motor...by hand.....
