The leadership of The Coca-Cola Company gathered at the Vivian Beaumont Theater in New York's Lincoln Center at11:00 am on April 23rd, 1985 for an important announcement. In the words of Chairman Roberto Goizueta, "The best has been made even better." The 99 year old secret formula for Coca-Cola was being replaced by New Coke.
Most of the readers of the blog know the rest of the story: the protest, the countless calls the 800-GET-COKE number, the lawsuits and the eventual admission of a mistake by The Coca-Cola Company 79 days later when Coca-Cola was returned to the market as "Classic" Coke.
For the first time in 25 years that have passed since that momentous meeting and we are unveiling some new documents for display at The World of Coca-Cola. These items will be added to the New Coke case in the Pop Culture Gallery and include Roberto Goizueta's hand annotated speech from the Lincoln Center event where he crossed out several remarks about the secrecy of the launch. We are also included one of the binders form the lawsuit from the Old Cola Drinkers of America and the briefing document for Project Kansas (New Coke internal codename.) I hope that if you are in Atlanta, you will be able to visit the World of Coke to see the new display.
The key learning for The Coca-Cola Company was that we proved the brand does not belong to us... it belongs to our consumers, when we took it away, we sparked a call to action. We heard the message then and still live by it now.
I would like to share a video of a speech made by the then President of the Coca-Cola Company, Donald R. Keough. These remarks, made at the press conference for the return of Coke Classic, were called the greatest performance by an America businessmen by a key marketer at the time. I think they do a great job in summarizing what we learned about our brand.

when the consumer has fallen in love with a brand that has become almost like a valued friend of the family the decision to change that formula is the worst thing a company can do if they care about the bottom line. God Bless Much Love

I have just uncovered and uploaded a video given out to coke distributors before the April 23rd 1985 announcement for "New Coke" code named "Kansas" if you're interested in knowing more information about New Coke straight from the source you should check it out! It's titled "New Coke "Kansas" Introduction To Coca-Cola Distributors Pre Public Announcement!"

Sure, here goes :- 1. The continued legality of Electronic Cigarettes in the E.U. 2. The introduction of a rolling date for the exemption of Classic Vehicles from UK Road tax. 3. The uncertain longevity of the reformed Van Halen (minus Michael Anthony of course). :)

You have to admire their honesty, assuming they're telling the truth. That they were "caught by surprise". But at the same time, you have to question their vision. How could they be caught by surprise? But maybe they knew that their historic taste would be missed and the riots that could ensue.

At the time, Pepsi sakes were outpacing Coke. There was a lot if anguish at TCCC about how to fix the brand. After much deliberation including Roberto Gonzalez asking permission from Robert Woodruff on Robert's death bed, the decision was made. Sales of Coke increased after Coke Classic was reintroduced.

Brilliance or ignorance, either way we got back the real coke. It is funny to think back about the advertising slogan "The Real Thing". They brought back "The Real Thing". In the words of Lewis Grizzard, "The only thing they can do to make Coke better is if they would add bourbon to it."

@vetteaok your the first person I have seen other than me write this, I cant believe everybody hasnt figured this out by now. I called a Coca-Cola 1-800 number once and I asked the dude this question and he said no. So I asked him when did they change to using corn syrup. He said he couldnt tell me because of trade secrets. Sure.

@@SuperOlds88 He's right. Many bottlers were already using HFCS before New Coke was introduced. I've also seen pictures of cans from when "Coke Classic" was brought back that advertised "Made with pure Hawaiian cane sugar," so it not all of them switched to corn syrup even then.

Coca-Cola began allowing bottlers to gradually switch to HFCS as early as 1980, five years before New Coke was introduced. Even before New Coke, many bottlers were sweetening entirely with it.

How old are you,16? You obviously have not had a Coca- Cola made with sugar in a glass bottle rather than the high fructose corn syrup slop in PLASTIC that you are happy to guzzle down. You'll just have to trust the old heads on this one...OR you can buy a bottle of Mexican Coke in a Mex Grocery or get a case from Costco and judge for yourself.
@alcarbo8613
@alcarbo8613 3 года назад
??????? 1. Plastic had no effect on the taste of soda 2. Corn-Syrup although less healthy has no actual effect on the taste either
@1060michaelg

@@alcarbo8613 Plastic most definitely imparts an unpleasant taste to the product, especially when it has been stored in hot place. Why do you think it is advised not to leave plastic bottles of water in the hot trunk of a car? Because : "When you heat things up the molecules 'jiggle around faster making them escape from one phase to another.So the plastic leaches it's component chemicals OUT INTO THE WATER MUCH FASTER...and MORE WITH HEAT APPLIED TO IT." Source: CHERYL WATSON (Professor of molecular biology) in TODAY July 26, 2019). Most people have become accustomed to the taste...myself included. But try a bottle of FIJI water (in leech proof specially made plastic) and you will know what I'm talking about. The same applies with ANY potable beverage stored in plastic...including Coca-Cola. Hope that shed some light on it. This is why tests now show that plastic DISSOLVES and all of our fish has an alarming amount of plastic in it. The seas are, in fact, becoming THICK with plastic. We should all be terrified. I hope that helped shed a little light on it. Happy Holidays to you, Al.

Most countries outside the US still make it with sugar. If anything, the kind with sugar is ordinary Coke and the American kind is the one that’s out of the ordinary.
