You do not need money to go to a safe shelter. Help was offered to anybody who wanted it. Beds, food etc is all free at shelters and they're pet friendly. NO excuses and they had several days notice.
You can, it will just be very unpleasant. Unpleasantly alive is better than being swept away by a storm surge. It's not just the storm you are fleeing, it's what desperate people are willing to do to survive. You leave until the entire disaster has passed.

@@megclifton6692 in this specific case, Orlando is inland. There are known low spots with poor drainage that are going to flood. I can’t tell the exact park this is, but I’d bet they use the local school as a shelter. It's been a crazy ride last night during the storm. The house and the studio rumbled and howled praying the windows held together. We made it though. Thank God. I want to say thank you to all the utility workers that have been coming into the state to assist on getting power restored. This was nothing like Hurricane Irma back in 2017. My prayers also go out to those that are more South of us.

its interesting to me. most people mention pets as a reason they didnt leave. wouls pet friendly shelters encorage more people to get out of danger zones?
Not all pet shelters are pet friendly. And once those fill up, people are either faced with a choice to abandon their pets for their own safety or take the risk.
You mean Biden when Florida has no money to do a damn thing by it self , its a welfare state , dependent of federal government every time there is a hurricane .
Amazing how?? It this the same state that the governor and other offical spent 12 million dollars to fly undocumented immigrants to Martha's Vineyard? It seems like money wasted and that could have been used to help people in need during this storm or something more production.
It’s funny, it’s usually people wearing these shirts that are the ones spewing out the vilest hatred at protests where other people don’t agree with their opinions.
They are all just cool as cucumbers about the whole situation. As a south Floridian, I can tell you that I sat in my car for 20 hours evacuating north for Irma back in '17, and it was pretty brutal, but for me, better safe than sorry. I'm sure that I'd do it again if I had to.
I've evacuated several times for Hurricanes. It's expensive, hard to do with pets, and sometimes is least logical choice depending on roadways, number of motorists leaving at same time, whether you can find a place to go, or a whole host of other problems evacuating presents. It's sensible if you can do it, but it's hard to do in a large peninsula like Florida with as many residents and limited number of roads to get out. People say flippantly oh why didn't people just evacuate as if that didn't occur to them. It isn't as cut and dry as people think. I've done it several times and it's always at least a quick thousand when I add up all the costs and think to yourself does everyone have enough funds to leave that easily and with jobs, pets, and kids. Trust me you never know what it's like until you are in that situation. I'm glad for people who could and do. I just don't assume those who don't aren't being responsible. They may have some mitigating reason why they stay home. Storm shelters help, but they get packed to.
Storm shelters can always squeeze you in so ... I don't get that. I do get not wanting to evacuate. I never do. I lived in a mobile home for a year or 2 and we did totally evacuate that. Depends where you live and what you live in and your windows or shutters and elevation. Don Lemon is a moron whether it's a cat 4 or a trop storm. Still a dope.
coouldnt you just drive out of state with a tent, tell the kids your going camping and camp out for a couple weeks thats like 50 bucks roght there 170 if you need to buy the tent
I live in southwest florida and we don't tend to leave because #1, there is no guarentee you can find enough gas to get out of the state and people have been stranded - even if you fill up before the storm you can't get out on one tank #2 work, pets and grandma and #3 the storm path changes and if you go the opposite direction or even to another state, I know people that ended up in the path of the storm anyway, and good luck finding a hotel room. At least at home you know you have food, water, shelter and you willbe fine with a level 1, 2 or 3 and have left for nothing, unless it's a level 4 or 5 then you are screwed and need to get to a shelter. It's a waiting game and about calculated risks. We have tremendous relief where I am that the storm hit south of us and turned right but my heart is heavy for those negatively affected.
@@beanseason6515 😆... I don't think so. But since I don't know you personally, that's only a guess, I could be wrong. I don't like to see good people suffer, and even, with a few exceptions, some of the bad ones. My job before I retired, required rescuing people, mostly water rescues in dangerous situations. Lots of times they were warned before they got in their predicament, but were too hardheaded to listen. But I still risked my life, helping those idiots, just like I did the ones that were caught unawares. Most of the time, the dumbasses that didn't listen, learned their lesson, and were grateful and apologized for not taking our advice. Not all did though. Some people are just lifetime assholes I guess.

I moved out of Florida a year ago and from the Orlando area. I wouldn’t have gone either because hurricanes almost never hit the center of the state. By the time you know it will, it’s too late to get out and you’re trapped in your car on a highway. That said, my old house 20 minutes north of Orlando is 100% safe with zero flooding. You just never know what’s going to happen.
When it comes to leaving, it’s not just about physical “property”… But for many it’s about their pets. For most people, pets are family not possessions, and during tense times many people don’t want to leave family behind!

@@DreamingInTechnicolor I live in a cyclone prone area. In the last 30 years we have had one fatality due to our massive cat 5 tropical storms - some migrant from the cities who didn't realise running a petrol engine generator in the same room he was sleeping in might be a bad idea. During Cyclone Yasi (one of the largest and most destructive tropical storms in history) we actually had a net gain since two babies were born at the height of the storm. How do we have a zero fatality rate from the same kind of storms that killed thousands of americans in the same timeframe? Simple. we're not stupid. People in low lying areas go to shelters. People in high areas give shelter. Then again we also wore masks during covid so I'm comparing apples to -oranges- morons.
@@dawggonevidz9140 That still has little to do with my comment. I’m only addressing the reason some people stated why they stayed. (As a kid) I’ve been through one hurricane, one tornado that hit our home, straight line winds that messed up our home, and a winter storm that left us without electricity for almost a month… My parents made arrangements, well before any emergency situation, to have locations designated to either drop off our pets or places we could go as a family unit that would accept our pets. The storms I listed were surprise hits. No warning we’re given, and the damage to our home wasn’t life threatening. So we stayed while FEMA and relatives drove to our location to document damage and help start on repairs. I think we all respond to Catastrophic events differently. Although I might not agree with someone, I’m just not going to disrespect them. I think that people should educate themselves on what shelters are available during certain events and their policies when it comes to animals. Its my understanding that there are a small number of evacuation centers that will take pets as long as they are kept in carriers.

Maybe it has something to do with them living in Florida. Hurricane season happens every year. This isn't something that they're not used to... I live just south of Buffalo. We don't freak out during massive blizzards and whiteouts that lead to power outages in below zero temperatures every year either. Yeah, only because she (the mother) and her neighbors are holding the first responders essentially hostage because they haven't evacuated and are abusing the safety net. She said she'd probably leave if they weren't coming back. That's not confidence that's entitlement.
@@FirstLast-di5sr You're evidently not aware of this, but those first responders would still be out there patrolling even if every one of those homes were vacant. Both families mentioned their animal family members who may not be allowed into shelters. That's two cats and a dog who weren't left to drown. Those are good people.
Living on the NC coast, I never want to leave. We left for Florence but I regretted it while we were in the NC mountains watching the storm devastation on TV. A day after we came back, the flood waters came up and washed out roads, land-locking communities for 2-3 weeks. My biggest concern was dirtbags robbing houses after the storm, knowing people evacuated. If politicians and society didn't encourage criminals to rob people, that could be one problem resolved. One area, dirtbags were going house to house on a jon boat until they encountered a home owner that stayed and greeted them at the door with a shotgun, he didn't shoot them but held them there until the deputies could get there.

Sorry but where is the clean water, electric, food, etc. how many days will they be in this situation, what if the water was a few inches higher? I'd rather not take the chance with my child. Not a good example nor a teaching moment.
@@fuzzlekitty The teaching moments happen while you're preparing for the storm. Stockpile water, ice, and food that can either be eaten cold or cooked on a grill. I wish people would heed evacuation orders. But if the state doesn't make it easier to evacuate (safer shelters, pet-friendly, transportation), some people will always stay behind.
Shelters are pet friendly..I feel sympathy for first responders who have to be out there riskung their lives when the residents could have already left long ago..
People don’t realize the path of the storm was so uncertain up until about 10 hours before landfall. My family in ft Myers we’re still working their jobs Wednesday afternoon before being able to go out and find food and water. They didn’t expect to have to evacuate since the storm was supposed to head more north towards the panhandle. The highways and interstate was already bumper to bumper. Where would they go? Who wants to sit in traffic during a storm when you can be at home with what you need and most people have boats or know of someone or neighbor who can help them. Hurricanes aren’t new to Florida. The storm was projected to be a tropical storm level by the time it got to central Florida so I get why they decided to ride it out.
@@patriciatennyson6557 Well that exactly my point, most of the people who fled the west coast to the central and east coast to evade the storm got hit anyways. Now most likely can’t get back home until the roads clear. Sometimes it makes more sense to stay if you can manage.

The decision to stay or flee, or where to flee, is like playing a game of "dodge ball." Sometimes, you'll flee to where the hurricane ends up going. It happened to me, with Hurricane Charlie, in 2004. After coming ashore at Port Charlotte, Charlie was supposed to go through Lakleland, FL, so I evacuated to Melbourne, on the east coast. Charlie missed Lakeland, but ended up going through Melbourne, albeit with only 65-70 mph winds.

Sure but you can't be helped when you're trapped in your home. At least at a shelter you have others who can help you. Never okay to not try for your kids and pets.

The power out, the water compromised, the sewers overflowing, the mold, the mosquitos, the reptiles, the reasons to not be there besides underestimating the flood level.

Human stupidity at its finest. Is not about affording. Some else in the shelter can get u food. Most important is to keep that little girl safe and alive. Unnecesary risk they are taking by staying.
@@onlineghost9813 shelters aren't necessarily safe. The cot next to your family could have a sexual predator in it. That becomes even more likely in Democrat run communities.
Watching the rain continuing to fall, and them then leaving without those people is very very difficult for me. Gods Bless the people of Florida tonight.

Staying in place in these situations compromises many people other than those staying in. I get it, it's their home and their stuff, but it's not AT ALL worth putting the guys working the boats and all the people supporting them in danger, not to mention taking up all the resources available that can easily result in NOT rescuing people who actually need it. Think past your nose!

@@KennuhWayne Most motels will allow dogs when they know you're evacuating from a hurricane and shelters are pet friendly but you have to control your pets.
Just depends on where you are. I was well inland on a higher elevation than average in a brick structure. I knew I was fine, but if you live in a low lying area or are towards the coast or within 75 miles of it's landfall path. Leave.

I remember some of the other folks rescued after Katrina and other hurricanes they had no money for gas or had no transportation whatsoever. Each major storm gives us more information on how to respond. This has been an incredibly organized relief effort. That said, I have not heard or seen any areas with fatalities so far. I have been through a major summer storm that left millions without power in Texas. I think it was 2004 or 2005 . 8 days with no power in June or July. No gasoline. No motels or restaurants. No ATM. I cooked what thawed out in my freezer on my gas grill outside. I had gas hot water. I had a landline. The battery backup to my house alarm was good for 2 weeks. To find gas,$,ice, and a motel with A/C was over 250 miles away and out of Texas. I had 3 big dogs. My cousin was stuck on a Key after hurricane Andrew. No one had heard from him in 3 weeks so we thought he was dead. No phones, money ,A/C, but the hotel he worked for had a huge cistern and food. No FEMA. Nothing improving. The hotel manager took down everyone's name and parent's phone numbers. Took all the change they could find. They borrowed a boat and went up the coast line until they found a working payphone. All relatives were notified after 4 weeks had passed. Storms are unpredictable. I keep maps in my van. I keep dog food, water, some non-perishable food, extra medication,NOAA Weather Radio $, a small bag packed and important phone numbers and paperwork ready to go. I would leave- I think? Florida is going to need lots of everything. The "now" is organized. Walmart,Amazon, big banks have donated millions. FEMA ,state, local, federal private, have it together. Thousands of utility workers are ready and they come with tools, parts, trucks. Support of trailer bunk houses and dining tents means they can set up mobile hubs and start work. The relief is staged and ready. But, this is a multi year task. God bless. Stay safe. Volunteers are on the way too.

I thought they were stupid for not leaving. Until the guy says he had two cats, and what was he supposed to do? Then I understood. If the only place I could go wouldn't let me take my cats, I would stay.
Motels are lenient if they know your escaping a hurricane or disaster and shelters are pet friendly. My brother and his wife have 2 cats and stay in motels with them when they evacuate Florida....NO PROBLEM.
@@sgtsims512 sounds like you need to open your eyes, many people have indoor cats who cannot survive easily outside. Thousands of cats die outside so no. Do not act like you know it all.
These men driving the boat are being respectful, not making a wake to add to the damage. The reporter is too stupid to know that when he asks if they are stuck. He just wants to sensationalize and see damage!

No matter what your political beliefs are, humanity supersedes any and all. Great effort by Don and CNN! We need to stand together and help each other through difficult times.
GQP would be celebrating if this happened in Blue states, they literally sent foreigners to blue states to prove that point, the only people not playing politics is the left, whereas some of us can't get past the hypocracy, and I for one would like to see a Biden banner being waved each time someone gets rescued, to remind these GQP voters that their subscription to Faux "news" is as good as the rubbish sailing past in the floods, next to the turd and gators floating around.
