Great song by Don McLean. It is his tribute to the sad life of the painter Vincent Van Gogh. He suffered from depression & committed suicide. He never saw any success during his life. But now his paintings are worth millions of dollars.

We agree so often. I have an artist friend who commented to me that she gets lost in Van Gogh's layers of paint. I mentioned this song & its many layers complimenting that painting style although without the thickness the painting has nor its nearly frantic brush strokes.

This lovely song is about the amazing artist Vincent Van Gogh, Don McLean was reading a biography about him and this song became a homage to him and his work. However, the song I remember best from Don McLean is probably American Pie, it's about Buddy Holly I believe. The song was huge and played so much back in the early 1970s. However, back to the song, Vincent, it's great to hear it again, and as you say, guys, such wonderful, expressive lyrics. Hard to believe that it's 51 years old, it's so timeless. Thanks so much for your reaction, guys, take care now. 😊👍

Vincent van Gogh was a painter and born in the Netherlands where I also come from. It is such a pity that his paintings that he made then did not yield much for him because they did not yet see the beauty of them. He was looking for love but didn't get it. He was a lost soul. In the end he decided to take his own life because he was so unhappy. Don MCLean has put it so beautifully in his lyrics and song, beautifully.

I wrote a paper on Vincent van Gogh for my English class in college because of this song by Don Mclean. That's how I came to know more about the sad and tragic life of a very talented and brilliant Impressionist painter both misunderstood and unappreciated during his time. In between bouts of madness, he painted his most famous painting " A Starry Night."

Such a haunting and beautiful song with touching, descriptive lyrics. For Don Mclean to put into words (with his sweet voice) what Vincent van Gogh may have experienced due to his disabling depression is masterful. Perfect, just perfect. You are right George, people should listen to songs they may not recognize because it could pleasantly surprise them and open up their world that much more. Isn't that why we listen to music to begin with? Thank you guys for posting this🧡

Do the live performance where in the beginning of the video he describes how the song came to be written. They don't know the sad story of his life and the frequent depressions with alcohol and women that affected him.
