When I heard this song written by Bat McGrath, my heart flew out of my chest into Don Potter's. The moment was the most important in my lifetime. What a beautiful voice to carry this song into the future for everyone to enjoy. I love it!

1971, grad student at Stanford, going to see Oscar, Bill Evans, Carmen, Ella, Basie, Flanagan, Brubeck, and all the greats and playing myself. Then this guy comes out and grabs me by the central nervous system and shakes me to the core. I hadn’t heard this depth of beauty in music, sort of a confluence between classical/orchestral and jazz. Earth shaking. Definitive. Lovely. Timeless album. As fresh today as it was then. Kudos Chuck all these years later.

Man, I was in high school when these guys were so busy. Chuck was my band director for a bit in 1969...he was a scream, busted our balls and made us feel like musicians. This is the Steve Gadd (same high school) I grew up with...strong, confident unbelievably fast in those days. Ronny Davis was another mentor back then along with Joe LaBarbara...Gerry, Joe Romano, Vinnie Ruggerio...man what a town it was then.

My father and I were at this concert. This beautiful song was the highlight of the concert for me. And my father, who many years prior to this concert actually played tenor sax with Chuck and his brother Gap, considered this Larry Covelli tenor solo to be one of the best he ever heard. I agree.

@@RW-ob4en My father died at home in 2017 and I was with him. As he was transitioning I played this song for him. And I could never understand why this song wasn't picked up to be the love theme song of some movie, or why this song didn't get airplay on radio stations. It is a timeless piece of music and truly one of the most beautiful songs ever written.

That is a very nice story. I love it! Your father was a lucky man. My wife and I used hospice for both our parents and our daughter worked hospice for 5 years in Madison WI. We are very familiar with the process you gifted your dad and appreciate it for the blessing it is for you both. RE the tune itself I agree w/you. It seems peculiar that someone hasn't run with it. The middle section "Whenever I feel lost..." is extremely effective and well-crafted to penetrate my soul. When the line "How could you not be what I dream?" comes I get goosebumps. Life and all. Chuck uses a great angular melodic line thats poignantly interweaved with heartwrenching harmonies. they are a Couple of the best bars of music I know "bar none'. @@johnventura1637

FRIENDS AND LOVE CONCERT - May 9, 1970 Vocals and guitar work by Don Potter are outstanding on this cut. Lyrics by Bat McGrath. A gathering of musicians from a variety of backgrounds, each one of whom contributed to the whole to make this concert remarkable. Musicians included Gap Mangione, GERRY NIEWOOD, Steve Gadd, TONY LEVIN, Chris Vadala, MARVIN STAMM, Al Porcino, STANLEY WATSON, Ned Corman, Larry Covelli, Bill Reichenbach, Vincent Di Martino, Robert Becker and the Rochester Philharmonic.

uncleheavy01 I must correct you; this is my father, Larry Covelli, playing the tenor sax solo on She's Gone. And I love watching Stanley's face as he listens to Larry Covelli's playing. A beautiful ballad.

I know. What love and admiration you see on Stanley Watson's face as Mr. Covelli delivers his perfectly haunting, masterful solo. Every note of this solo is burned into my memory, as I listened to it literally thousands of times as a teenager, back in the early 1970s.

Mark Murphy did a nice version of this song on his "Bridging A Gap" LP (no scatting, just pure heartfelt singing). Don't know why more singers didn't cover "She's Gone", though, since it's so beautiful.

This is a great performance. Another incredible cover (instrumental but even more gorgeous) is done by Rob Parton's Jazztech big-band on their "Two Different Days" CD. Breathtaking. Hearing it is a downright haunting experience.

...Buffalo born Larry Covelli takes the most lyrical tenor sax solo on this. He sometimes comes back to the B-Lo and plays at the Hertel ave. 'Italian Fest. For my Martje.

David, I'm amazed that no one has COVERED this song and brought it out as a single. If you're interested, I have an ACOUSTIC VERSION of this song, with just Don and his guitar. I believe it's a cut from a solo concert at RIT.. I agree with you about ending up in a puddle of tears, very intimate and intense lyrics. One of my favorite songs from Don and Bat. Email me if you'd like a copy.

Thanks for correcting me and I apologize for my error. Your father, Larry Covelli, gave us something special here. I have listened to him play this many times and he just plays so beautifully on it, completely carrying the emotion of She's Gone. Is there anything else that Larry Covelli recorded that we can listen to?
