The best part was that the first cut to the audience was to Larry David, and you could tell he'd already been standing. You can see him SHOOT up as soon as Kathy was about to say "UUUUUUUPPPPP!" Larry knows what's up.
Well said. They didn’t understand it because it wasn’t rehearsed garbage. Rickles is a true legend. Class and the funniest delivery He invented attitude comedy And if he didn’t invent it he made it his.
I can see the director in the production boost screaming at the monitors "Come on Rickles, read the teleprompter!!! Tell those guys down there to motion to him to GET ON WITH IT!!! .... Jesus Christ!" hahaha
Rickles was a gangsta. any situation, he would kick the door off the hinges and start verbally slapping people around before those in the room knew what hit em.
I'm 25 yo from North East India admiring and laughing at every Don Rickles Dean Martin celebrity "man of the hour" roast. R. I. P Don u got your cookies 🙏
Don went right up on stage and roasted everyone in front of it and in back of it at the same time. What a guy. The Maestro of Malice. We miss you dearly.
Whenever Rickles went on Carson, nothing was written or planned. Carson and his team knew better than to keep to a script when Rickles was around due to his spontaneous wit. Truly the last living comic legend. We will never see another comedian like him ever again. Thanks for all the laughs, Don:)
1:29 "Let's read these funny lines they wrote for us." So priceless, and so on-the-money. The only time the segment dies is when they stick to the script. (Addendum, five years later:) Kathy Griffin has finally done something I can admire, and even enjoy... She shows deference to Rickles.
As Rickles went into his 80’s I swear he became funnier. His withering, ‘who gives a fuck attitude’ meant something genuine. We ain’t gonna live forever, folks. It gave him a new edge.
I am 20 but I grew up with lots of Dons stand up, his movies and the roasts he did way back in the day with Dean Martin and everyone. Toy Story was the first movie I ever watched
Not a big Kathy Griffin fan but she nailed it with that "GET UP." Those dummies in the audience probably didn't realize Rickles is more of a legend than ANY of them will ever be.
@UCZ7Pb9zbOZNZZyMyxBvvCKA That's the difference between his time, and our time. His time, people had respect. Our time, all these Hollywood douches think they're too good for that. A living, breathing legend, who is basically telling the producers to go fuck themselves, and rightfully so, and they treat him like he hasn't helped pave the way for where those bitches are sitting. Fuck every single one of those sacks of shit that had to be told to stand up
Wow. Every single video or encounter seen with Don Rickles, from his 20’s all the way through to his 90’s no matter who is in the room, from someone on the street to news anchors to actors to the greatest of entertainers, no one can hold a candle to Don. He is the king of comedy, the quickest & the most sharpest fastest ever, known to man.
Tell you what, my respect for Kathy Griffin just shot up about 23,000 points. They should have been on their feet when his foot first hit the stage. She was all indignant and shit,..."GET UUUUUUP!!!" You go girl. He deserves more respect than that whole room combined. I'm just saying.
Gotta agree with you there. I don't normally care for her, but she seemed genuinely respectful of Rickles. Glad she called the audience out on that one. "GET UUUUP!"
I read her memoir "Official Book Club Selection" and she often referenced getting advice from Rickles. You could tell from those stories she respected his immense talent and likely viewed him as an influence on her own insult humor (whether you care for it or not)
Oh don't worry....she will only suffer for about a month and then be back on top again I'm sure you also are one of those self righteous hyporites who will condemn this joke but had zero problem against neocon extremists holding up nooses and then stating "Hang Obama!" along other tasteless, racist shit. At least she apologized. They have not, including the person who she went after (i.e. has he ever apologized for the people he defrauded from his "university"? How about the women whose vaginas he touched? Plus those contractors who he stiffed over the years)
It kind of is ornery tho cause it's obvious he isn't good with reading lines. Rickles is all imrprov, and Kathy Griffen trying to stick to the lines creates an awkward chemistry.
"This crap got me nowhere"...classic and so true. That's why he never made it as an actor...you simply cannot script the man ! He's at his best when he tells it like it like he sees it ! Russel Peter's is very good with engaging the audience as well...
it's called respect. She idolize Don, and when you're with someone who you respect very much, you don't want to outshine/ show off. You let them shine.
A unique comic genius who has made countless millions laugh at life. Building on the tradition of Groucho Marx, Shecky Greene and others, the zenith of improv wit.
I love Don Rickles. He always makes you come around to his way of seeing it. He slaps you in the face with his comedy until you get "it". How you know you got it you laugh and feel a smile on your face. God bless him.
RIP Don. Thanks for the unforgettable laughs and outrageously zany insult humor. If only i could've been ripped apart by your imaginative, creative mind!
This was great! I wished I had known that Don was going to be on that show. I would have watched it, just for him. I give Kathy credit for her admiration of Don. Don is the last one. All the other greats are gone. Kathy shouldn't have had to tell them to stand.
"Hey, folks, this crap got me noplace..." LoL!!! This is Don Rickles!!! That's what he does!!! What hockey puck put the title on this vid anyway??? LoL!!!
You are so right. I thought the same thing. Those people should have been on their feet when Don first made his entrance. Good on Kathy for getting them to stand up for a legend.
