He managed to roast every race, 2 sports teams, 3 countries, 5 celebrities, 7 audience members, and Leno like a thousand times in the span of 10 minutes.
@@dereksherwood1 How can you be so dumb? He hasn't been dead but a couple years now if that long. In our PC culture Don amused everyone all the time. Our silly culture trends never changed Don and people loved him even more. You're ridiculous.
The audience is too young, to realize he is the most genuine person to ever hold the title of "comedian". Don Rickles, you were a master of your craft. You are loved. You are missed. And you ARE the GOAT! RIP SIR
Spot on. And I have to add, if “you” don’t find this funny, there really is one thing, and only one thing, that you can hope for, and that is a short life, because it really most suck being you.
I saw him a few times and knew where he insulted the audience so sat in one of the two areas he targeted. He had me get up and go to the back of the theatre and when I was far enough away he proceeded to hit on my girlfriend. The other area was in the middle section, right side near the isle, 2nd or 3rd row, he’d get volunteers from that area to join him on stage. My plan was to get in that section the next time he was in town but sadly he passed away. So much fun.
Don wasn't truly angry, but just gave the crowd what they wanted. Most people didn't know that Don Rickles was one of the kindest, supportive, and decent human beings in comedy history. He even managed to stay married to the same woman for over 50 years by the time he passed away. Most comedians are pretty maladjusted people in real life.
What does being married have to do with anything? Plus it's not the quantity of marriage but the quality. My parents were married 45 years.....30 of which they hated each other.
@@tomcooper6108 Tenacity. If it's a relationship where they're unhappy even more so, it takes serious work to even get through the day if you're around someone often with whom you fight. That's not to recommend that situation on anyone, but it sure says more about character than your modern day serial monogomist who goes through spouses like jobs.
@@johnbigelson7471 Unbelievable....You didn't take into consideration the effect on children. I can only speak for me but almost every day I wished they'd get a divorce. Nor did I witness a loving adult relationship my whole childhood.
He certainly wasn't kidding. You have to remember he and Carson were family and carson would NEVER keep him waiting. Sinatra would have had Johnny's knees whacked.
If he's like that to the one guy he can just forfeit the show to (as in, Don can carry himself and anyone else tbh) and it'll be a success, I really wonder how people would ever think Leno was any good.
@@neonblackmarket racism means being disgusted soo much by a person that you would be okay with their death, and the death of anyone else like them.. did Don do that? No.
@@amiamiri5978 ???????????????? Have you literally only ever seen this clip if Don rickles?????? He made fun of Jews and Italians all the time After consideration I think the person I responded to had to be saying that sarcastically. If not my previous statement stands.
He was, but it's "okay" because it's "comedy." Mainstream audiences eat this stuff up--as long as they're not the targets. You can dish it out...but you can't take it! Rickles' humor is unintelligent , lazy, and cowardly. It's easy to hurl insults (and get paid doing it).
Mr. Rickles was one of the world's greatest! His mind must have worked at 110% all the time to come up with his comebacks and jokes. Wish we have some like him now.
He was quick alright, but his humor is so dated. Played out af. People feel they need to admire this shit because he was inspiration to many modern comedians. But this comedy is shit
"I knew Johnny Carson....Johnny Carson was a friend of mine.....you, sir, are no Johnny Carson...." BOOM. Mic drop, it's all over. Leno couldn't shine Rickles' shoes.
Lloyd Bonafide "...one of the nicest guys ever..." ...A common misconception. You should read The Late Shift and/or The War for Late Night if you care to know the truth about Jay Leno.
Michael James That’s what Leno gets for baiting him before he came out. In that business making a joke about someone before they stage is a cheap shot. Jay did it twice.
Mexicans don't offend me. I grew up with Mexicans for neighbors. Went to schools with Mexicans. Mexicans even fought at the Alamo, unknownst to most people including Mexicans. I respect the Mexican people. Now go make me a big burrito and bring me an ice cold Tecate.
My favorite thing about Don Rickles is you can tell who he really respects and who he doesn’t, love seeing him get truly vitriolic cause he really was a genuinely nice guy from all accounts
Leno tried to give respect to old time Carson guests as well as the show's legacy. He could've ripped into Rickles when he was younger and unbridled. Leno was sharp and fast before he became safe.
Van PastorMan it's called whimpification and pussification. Anything past why the chicken cross the road today's delicate flower population explode. Although now that I think about it, they will cry abuse of animals. Forget it.
I'm glad I didn't grow up with this political correctness generation(s). They don't understand when a joke is truly a joke. I wish Don Rickles were still alive today just to watch him entertain again. God Bless his soul.
Be Advised : When you're in the company of Sinatra if there's a rolling log you pick it up and put it back in the fireplace otherwise he takes your name and beats up your aunt.
I had the chance to work for both of these guys on several different occasions and off stage they were both two of the nicest people I ever got to work for. Perfect gentlemen to the staff, crew and fans. But yes on stage Don could be brutal and was even more so in his prime. His mind was like a steel trap. Here he is falling back on some old stereotypical bits. After all he is 85 but he is still pretty quick. The weird part was back in the day people would pay a big premium to get front row seats because it was widely known he did his caustic ad libs only about the people sitting in the front row. They paid extra to be publicly humiliated by Don? I never understood that part. But for the crew who had to do 8 shows a week we loved Don because it was a different show every night.. Jay is what you see is exactly what you get.. very generous as he is here, feeding Don the set up and taking the hits.
Well to be fair, this isn't Don at his most brutal. It was obvious that Jay was making sure he was being the wing man to Rickles' humor that was why by the time the so called band had to play some music and Rickles was building up momentum - the crowd of the time could accept the sensitive jokes but Jay didn't have to take any hits at all. You should see the talk show wars when Kimmel was on Leno. That was Leno taking hits. Jay just introduced the audience here to a comedian that poked fun at the audience. That's my hypothesis why you pay Don to be publicly humiliated. He was never a brutal comedian so when you hear his jokes it was like you were paying to be roasted for free. There was little malice on his part. All his so called brutal jokes don't come off like he has an agenda against you. It was good fun unlike the more modern comedians who'll really try to get at you just to create these big laughs at the expense of a person's belief.
His comedy was based on what everyone else was thinking and feeling inside. Exposing those fears in the manner he did, eased an awful lot of tension in the 60's and 70's. Gone are the days. It's like having a relentless Uncles bust your balls at every BBQ the family throws. Love the guy. r.i.p.
My biggest regret was never seen Mr warmth live. I had a chance to see him a few years before his death but I had an issue with work I totally regret not seeing him live. The man is comedy gold
All Leno has is cheap high school comebacks. "have you seen yourself on tv?" "no i'm not like you" nothing witty, just desperate insult there. Same in the beginning with the big celebrity entrance thing.
You can literally see the softening of society. In the 60s and 70s, his ethnic jokes would've killed. Here he is in the 90s and the ethnic jokes are landing about 50/50. Nowadays, forget about it. Lisa Lampanelli was the last to pull it off.
@@dontayedaniels5710 Yes but his style is a little different. He always circles back around to a self-deprecating theme. Rickles and Lampanelli, however, made the ethicity-based "cut" the core of the joke. But the ethnicity in question could laugh at themselves along with everyone else. It takes skill to carefully craft and word a joke in the just right way to accomplish that.
@@JPGtampa society changes. It’s not “getting softer”, it’s just different. Comedians will always joke about fucked up shit and will always do fine. It’s just what that fucked up shit will be is different than that of the previous generation
Newhart said "Where's my telephone, where's my telephone?".... the audience didn't get that one either. Lot's of Don's rapid-fire jokes went unnoticed and unappreciated. RIP Mr. Warmth!
Usually when racial jokes are made the people of that race laugh, but all the pussy uptight liberals get offended to show everybody else how not racist they are. Nick Depalo made that joke at the Roast of Larry the Cable Guy because he made an Obama joke and he said all the black people were laughing and stuck up white people were looking offended.
Asking Jay Leno to go toe-to-toe with Don Rickles is like asking a toddler to hold back a hurricane. The chin never stood a chance. Also, Rickles for me is proof of the axiom, "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone". I'm so bummed that I didn't figure out who Rickles was until after he died, and I grew up watching Carson! What a wit.
In other interviews Don always stops cracking jokes to say good things about them and how much he loves the host ....I noticed he didn't do that to Jay. Safe to say, he didn't like him. Loove Don Rickles! A legend!
People who say this is racism clearly don't know the definition of racism. Is it offensive to some people? Yes, so watch something that doesn't offend you. The KKK is racist, Neo- Nazis are racist. Don Rickles wasn't racist, he is a comedian making fun of stereotypes.
So sad that audiences in the 1990s were already booing hilarious ethnic comedy, but if you watch Don Rickles on Johnny Carson in the 1970s, people were rolling in the aisles at the same kind of jokes. The country has been destroyed for a long time now.
They don't make fast-thinking brains like Don Rickles anymore. You have to go along with him or get roasted. He attacked the host, band, crew, and every race, "non-Jewish" religion, mental disability, and socially awkward behavior of anyone in attendance. His description of Jay Leno's nervous mannerisms on air as acting like a "queer lighthouse" was perfect. He even made fun of the younger generation for wearing condoms. The man was a beast, legend, and immune to heckling or getting cancelled. I wish I had the chance to witness him perform in person.
First thing's first I love Don's comedy, I noticed how the audience reacted to his racist jokes go back to his heyday and audiences were dying laughing big change.
And this is why Don wouldn't really like going on this "Hockey Puck's" show..... See what I did there? lol RIP to the one, and the only.... Don Rickles.
Th problem is that Jay can’t ever let himself be the one who gets “got”. He can’t let Don have the last word and it creates an awkward tension. Rickles is the legend. Jay should have played the game and set Rickles up. The laughs from the audience come easier without awkward rivalry. Jay’s not a generous comedian. Every other interviewer always respected Don and would just let him go and do his thing.
10:33 Leno - Don its always pleasant to have your charm on the show Rickles - Smiles as Leno pats his shoulder because hes just made the gullible people think he was serious. It amazes me just how many people fall for Rickles jokes. The only person Don didnt rib this hard was Sinatra although he called him a mobster.
