No, I think Don relished a worthy riposte from his target. It kept the banter interesting and challenging. Jay did great and Don took it as good as he dished it.
Leno is a tool. The job of the host is to service the guest, to give the guest a platform to shine. He tried to keep up, but Rickles just rolled right through him.
Don always had that old look like he was going to die in the next 45 minutes. White folks age so prematurely. That's what made me laugh about him anyway. I never listened to what came out of the old bat's mouth
It's hard for people to understand comedy based on stereotypes because they take it personally. And that's why you have to be a genius comedian to get away with dark humor. And Don was one.
That is a true statement BUT Don's time has come and gone. His style of humor has lost it's punch as the Super Stars pass away. Plus Don is like the poster boy that the Political Correct nuts stand against.
This was right around the time of his great cameo in "Dirty Work". He was a huge star in he 70's but it was great that he was able to get a whole new audience with roles in "Casino" and other great 90's films. One of the all time greats, RIP
Nobody and nothing was sacred to Don. "Step up and be shredded" was his raison d'etre when he was on stage. Off-stage - and it was long after I learned to enjoy his work that I learned this - he was the sweetest and kindest soul you could imagine. God bless you, Don. Thank you for all the laughs.
Leno's audience never truly understood Don's humor. I felt like when Leno came on, Carson's audience went to Letterman. I know Rickles was not thrilled about Leno getting the show. And Leno didn't know how to play the role with Rickles.
that is a good point really about leno not knowing how to play the role- his audience isn't really to blame for the boo'ing, leno kinda is since don was doing the same kind of shtick he always did. if leno opened with an insult or two, it would have allowed don to do his thing with proper effect instead of coming off as a sudden attack on jay
I usually hate Leno, but I have to say I thought he did pretty well here TRYING to steer Rickles away from some of the more questionable material (Jerry's Kids etc.).
@@TrevorToonArt lol...and you base this hot take on what info, exactly? Most guests are just there because they have to promote their new movie/album/whatever, and have zero interest in being there beyond the hour or so that they show up, get ready and leave, let alone sit around all day rehearsing some fake conversation. Unless there's a giant conspiracy and every host is lying for their lizard overlords, hosts greet guests in their dressing rooms, then bring them out and ask a bunch of questions scripted to get the guest to talk. It's not rocket science, and scripting, memorizing and rehearsing entire conversations would be both impossible and pointless.
I'm just really discovering Don, but man have I missed out! This guy is comedic gold! Cant believe I havent heard of this guy in my 30 years of life. I got a lot of videos to go through
11:47 Rickles does his notorious impression of one of ''Jerry's Kids'' from Lewis' Annual Muscular Dystrophy Telethon followed by the merciless imitation of Jerry Lewis, himself, in classic cornball fashion, warbling away in tribute to the afflicted. This goes over not only Leno's head but that of most audience members as well.
Notorious RC3 Leno is revered in the comedy world, especially for his stand-up & crowd work before the Tonight Show so to say he’s not funny at all is preposterous. But he’s no match for Rickles, but to be fair no one is.
7:40 Rickles starts going into a bit about his wife asking if he fooled around before he met her and Leno interrupts the bit. Now I remember why I never watched him.
Lame crowd. The Richard Simmons line got the best response. Like when Leno points out "my mother's from Scotland" after Don's done an impression of her as a mafioso.
Everyone seems to think don hated Leno but he did this with every interviewer. They were clearly roasting each other on purpose and not out of spite. Just look at 13:48 and see. Don clearly laughed genuinely. People just love to rag on Jay because he wasn’t the best host all the time.
My friend use to not like Don Rickles, but after watching clips like this, they love his sense of humor. This is hilarious, keep it up, you don’t have enough subscribers or views for videos as good as this.
When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high And don’t be afraid of the dark At the end of the storm, there’s a golden sky And the sweet, silver song of a lark Walk on through the wind Walk on through the rain Though your dreams be tossed and blown Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart And you’ll never walk alone You’ll never walk alone Walk on, walk on With hope in your heart And you’ll never walk alone You’ll never walk alone
I never watched Leno. Terrible host. Didn’t care about the answers. Made Don work extra hard with his lack of skill in interviewing, and you can tell Rickles doesn’t care for him.
Went back and watched a Rickles / Carson show. The big difference is they were friends (along with Sinatra, etc.) going back to NY. It wasn't just a celebrity appearance.
