Don't be me at the ER! Wear MTB Body Armor all the time! Leatt 3DF AirFit, Troy Lee, Fox 3DO, IXS

It took me a visit to the Emergency Room to take safety seriously when riding a mountain bike. Yes, I wear the usual knee pads, arm pads, and MIPS helmet, but apparently that's the minimum. After several weeks of research in pain reviewing Fox, G-Form, IXS, Leatt, Alpinestars, etc., I share my purchase that I believe is the best compromise in protection and comfort.

Glad you are ok. I’ve met enough high level MTB riders who have “body armor/helmet saved my life” stories (and photos) that I’m convinced. I’m going to condition myself to wear all the gear, all the time. Accidents can happen on any level trail.

Same injury from yesterday, down hill, lots of dry hay, couldn’t stop, landed on right hip, now in bed watching your video in pain! Thank you for sharing, will buy leatt armor set and wear it every time!

Leatt seems to make the best body armor for MTBing for sure! This is the same stuff Im buying but the long sleeve version of the upper because I like the elbow pads built in.

SIZING | I want to add more information regarding sizing, as all videos on the internet reference only height. However, Leatt provides more sizing information in the accompanying booklet that will help those trying to figure out fitment. S/M: 160-172 Height; 81-90 Chest; 46-50 Torso || L/XL: 172-184 H; 91-110 Ch; 51-54 T || XXL 184-196 H; 111-125 Ch; 55-59 T. The chest protector is a universal size. The back protector changes as follows: S/M: 280mmWide-410mmLong || L/XL: 307mmW-444mmL || XXL 325.4mmW 477mmL I am 174cm tall with a 103cm chest; 51cm Torso. I bought an S/M and am quite happy with the fit. I will buy an L/XL next time for the extra 3cm in protection length in the back. I have worn it once so far and did not wear a dri-fit under it and it was perfectly comfortable. The day was a mixture of shuttles and pedals up to session some spots, so 10 min pedals on average. It was a hot blue sky summer's day: 25-26 degrees C and I did not notice I was wearing the protector. The S/M is a tight fit, but it stretches really well and does not impact riding or flexibility. It is simple to hand-wash but due to the plastic internal frame that holds the 3DF plates in place via velcro, you cannot machine wash it. It is noticeably heavy when holding the product on a hanger, but that weight is not noticeable once on. This Airfit Lite model is well suited to typical gravity MTB. The Airfit model with Level 2 CE would be overkill unless you were DH racing or doing freeride. Thanks for your video, as it prompted me to buy this product and I will always wear it on shuttle/gravity days.

Road cycling is MUCH more dangerous than mountain biking in general. I cringe everytime I see someone riding shoulder of a major highway. It's a disaster waiting to happen.. imaging getting a flat going 30mph with cars passing you 55 mph+

I am down to the Leatt or the TLD as choices, and am leaning toward the TLD. I’ll watch all the videos and talk to all the good riders before I decide. Seems like neither would be a bad choice.
@udtrader
@udtrader Год назад
They are both great, but have different "fit" so try to buy from a store where return/exchanges are easy. 661 is another brand I own that has a tighter fit for those with smaller/shorter upper body. 661 is much cheaper while providing similar level of protection as Leatt/TLD. www.chainreactioncycles.com/us/en/sixsixone-evo-compression-jacket-short-sleeve/rp-prod129499

I really liked your honesty and opinions. I feel like I could learn from your experiences. Thank you for making this video. I'm 44 and I do a lot of highway motorcycle riding and mountain biking too. But I'm in india, where there is zero infrastructure that u can fully rely on. The traffic lights are a decoration of sorts many times 😂 But hey, at least we're more alert! ...or we be controlling the population surplus by our arrogance 😂 Anyways, I've decided to do the x frame hybrid knee braces and also these shorts. Revzilla says these shorts do not have the certified armour that lock up upon impact, but you say they do. They do have the orange color 😅 well, something's better than nothing on there of course. I'm not sure about the certification But will take the plunge. Thank you for your insight! Hope you have recovered completely!

Hey man, great video. I found it cause I was looking for the Leatt tee and your video came up. I had a big hip injury 2 years ago, had to go to the OR to stop an internal hemorrhage. I then bought the TLD shorts but the pads only go up to my waist and my injury was further up, still on the hip, but higher, kind of like yours!!! So it was a great relief to find your video because I can’t find any protection for the upper hip area, kind of like where the iliac crest is. I never wore the TLD shorts and then two weeks ago I beefed at the skatepark while dropping in, my elbow pads and helmet protected those respective areas but again, my other side, the hip above the waistline got it pretty bad. Its really swollen right now, kind of like touching a water balloon, but at least I didn’t have to go to the hospital this time. I can hardly find any protection for that area, and I don’t want to wear football or hockey shorts. I was looking at the Leatt Tee, how are the pads on the hip area??? (Thanks for listening, more than anything I wanted to share my story with you, we’re not alone!!)

ebike is much more dangerous because of the weight of the bike - treat it like a motorcycle on an obstacle course if you ride on trails with tree branches, rock gardens, etc.

I know this is an old post, but I have a question. Did you need to upsize your clothing over the top so I didn’t fit to tight?
@udtrader
@udtrader 9 месяцев назад
I didn't have to upsize as my Fox jerseys come a bit larger and most of my shirts have some stretch in them. However, some shirts like RaceFace jersey fit tight. One thing to remember is that if you size up creating more air gap between your body and the shirt, then you'd be trapping body heat under the shirt. This is why road cyclists wear tight fitting jerseys to help wick their sweat without trapping body heat.

I’m a big fan of the Leatt impact shorts. Looking to get some body protection for bike park days and debating between the airfit body tee and the airflex chest and back protector. Do you ride with the airfit body protector regularly?
@udtrader
@udtrader Год назад
I don't ride with airfit protector on local trails with known features, but I wear it to bike park and new trails rated black/double black. Here's a thought.. a friend broke his ribs OTB riding a local trail that we regularly ride. Handlebar twisted and stabbed his ribs. He sure wished he had chest protector then.

Have you have any rides in the leatt protection ? I purchased the vest version but it feel way too heavy for mtb riding . I’m thinking of returning it. .
@udtrader
@udtrader 2 года назад
I rode few times and felt same in terms of weight, but it all depends on your trail, weather, and physical strength. I also own 661 EVO, but I like the Leatt fit better. Troy Lee is lighter, but looks a bit goofy on the trail. So, there's really no win unless you opt for the "tee" type with much less protection.

How does the armor itself feel? I'm not sure if I should go with the tee with ce1 or the vest with ce2.
@udtrader
@udtrader 2 года назад
Armor itself is very comfortable. The protection pieces are soft and flexible to touch, but turns hard on impact. It does get warm during hot summer days, but they all do. Selection will depend on the type of trail you ride. If green, just knee pads. ;) Blue, maybe a tee. Black + double black = protection all around.

How’s the rib protection?
@udtrader
@udtrader 2 года назад
I've crashed a few times (lean out) and the front/back plates were enough to provide some protection to the ribs. However, there's no protection for direct impact to ribs on the sides unless you took the impact with your arms first. Wear your elbow guards and learn to tuck & roll!
@macvos
@macvos 2 месяца назад
There's a bit of soft foam for very soft impacts, but that won't do much against hard impacts. You'll have to go to much heavier CE Level 2 armor (Leatt 5.5, Alpinestars Bionic Tech V3, etc.) for proper rib protection.
