A lot of artists are introverts and the fear of painting in front of others can hold them back! I have come to love painting plein air or at my local coffee shop because it's such a great exercise for my painting practice. Bringing a travel watercolor sketchbook, my watercolor paints, and a little glass jar for water around with me in the city has been so fun! It helps me paint faster, focus on capturing a scene or feeling of a place efficiently, and keeps me motivated to push through the messy middle stage of a painting when others are watching. In this vlog, I'll share the benefits of painting in public and why you should definitely incorporate it into your painting practice!

Public art often fosters a sense of connection with the community. Artists and viewers can feel a sense of shared ownership and pride in the art that decorates public spaces.🍵

Ashleigh, it was an absolute thrill to have you in our store! Funny you mentioned wanting to start learning to stretch your own canvases, because we've been thinking a lot about that subject lately! We'd be interested to know what you and your community would like to see in the way of resources to support self-teaching in-studio canvas preparation! And, we're getting our sweaters out too-- if you live in this part of the country, switching to fall fashions is something we look forward to all year!

What you shared about being a left-handed artist/calligraphy artist resonated so much with me. Not many things in this world are made for us lefties.

What a lovely vlog! Loved seeing the calligrapher too, meeting people and the conversations around art are sometimes some of my favourite things about painting outdoors❤

This was so beautiful, refreshing and relaxing.. I felt the dynamic yet gentle energy of the place.. a little wind just enough to wiggle a branch of a small bush.. few people walking around.. the fresh view point of the artist looking at the beautiful building in the corner of the street, using it as a subject to her painting.. the idea of sitting in a cafe to craft art is just deeply satisfying.. it really feels good to have nice people in your life and all around.. I love the painting, it’s so lively and genuinely spontaneous, like a joyful breeze! Love it❤

if someone had told me: "Don't be scared to paint in public" a year and a half ago, I would think: "Huh, of course, it's easy to say". But now I forced myself to step over this fear, and I can say to those who have not yet tried: go for it! First try. Nothing bad can happen 😉 Thank you, Ashleigh, for the video! Your art is beautiful with each medium you choose!

0:55 🇳🇱whoohoo, Nederland! Although I don’t paint often in public, when I do it is either a really relaxing feeling, because I picked a secluded spot, or a fun experience, since people are in general curious about what you’re doing, and will stop to chat. I spoke about this with the art teacher whose course I’m taking, and he said: as an artist, painting/drawing on sire, you’re most of the time immediately seen as harmless, but also approachable. Personally I liked it when people shortly sat next to me, asking about my art, and telling me about how they also used to be creative.

Love your humble yet inspiring videos! I am sooo scared of painting in public...in my offc had to create a pc with a friend and collg, I was sooo nervous and kept working on it to make it perfect! Initially, I was skeptical - I later really liked it...! Cheers, you are awesome!🎉😊👏

Love this video. It can be difficult to unhermit yourself when wanting to draw and paint in public. This may sound funny to some, but I usually like to wear hats when I paint outdoors lol. It kind of narrows my vision a little so I notice the looky loos a bit less.
