Full disclosure I am terrible at basketball, I have never coached or worked in any way with any kind of organized basketball. That being said I knew right off the bat that this was going to be a trash situation. Even if they managed to fit the pieces together and make the playoffs this team was not going to go deep. This is going to be a tragedy waiting for whatever future implosion happens. Say what you will, they have four HOFers, but they are a bad team.

I'm not sure if this is a Russ vs Harden issue. There are strong arguments for both players. This is a Kawhi/PG issue. Which guard best matches the team's best players? I think it's clear since he arrived that this is Russell Westbrook. It's fairly obvious actually. Remember Russ had a full season and a half to play next to LeBron James. Then he had the end of last season, a full training camp, and the whole preseason to learn The Clippers offensive/defensive concepts. He has a comfort level in half court sets with Kawhi, PG, and Zu. In the half court Kawhi and PG are usually handling the ball with Russ as either a screener, in the dunker spot, or as a corner spot up shooter. Russ now can play on and off the ball but his pace is what transformed The Clippers from a bottom of the league type of offense(even with great shooting efficiency) to a top of the league type of offense(while boosting their shooting efficiency even though he is not an efficient shooter himself) This also takes pressure off the defense because you don't have to have perfect defensive possessions. You have the ability to stay with the opponent until the defensive coverages improve during the game. So in many ways Gil is right in how Harden needs to play with the current starting group. Russ should be the pg, leading the offense with Harden, PG, and Kawhi as the shooters....Zu has the big in the dunker's spot. Then they can commit to keeping Zu.... If you want to share ball handling/play making, you trade Zu and bring in a spacing center. Someone that can shoot from behind the arc and hit a mid range from the high post. Harden plays too slow and should not be the starting pg for The Clippers.

1. They wasn't doing good cause for at least 5 years a ring has been the expectation. 2. It's not too much offense cause the offense sucks rn. James harden is just literally trying to be an sg for the first time in years since he's always been a pg type player

An ego the size of Harden doesn't fit on the bench. He will never engage with the game if he's coming of the bench for 15-20 minutes.

Harden has proven he'll take a back seat in scoring with both Brooklyn & Philly & become a playmaker & Westbrook is just right now in his career on a team with multiple all star calliber players that he's best coming off the bench running his own second unit. He could always sub in with the starters if need be. Like when the starters can't buy a bucket, Westbrook can come in & get some offense flowing by driving the ball & drawing fouls. At some point Ty Lue is gonna have to be held accountable. He's the one that's gonna have to make that change whether it upsets a player/s or not. This team shouldn't be no lower than a 3 seed out West & no lower than 5 best team overall in my opinion. They gonna wish they had those wins they should've won come playoff time if this keeps up.

Westbrook cant catch and shoot, he's not a threat at the perimeter, and without the ball in his hands, his only real contribution is rebounding. Russ is best as a facilitator with the better scorers on the court - the worse the pieces around him, the more of if he has to do himself, so having him come off the bench and lead the second team minimizes his strengths. Harden is his own offense, and doesnt need anyone around him - having him come off the bench maximizes his abilities. There's no accounting for egos, but in terms of play style, Harden is a natural fit to head up the bench effort, and Russ would be wasted there.

I understand that it would be best for the team if harden takes that role, but I dont think he should sacrifice in order to accommodate westbrook.

@@shonwilliams9216 several times over the years, usually at the end of games. The one that comes to mind right now was a game against the Lakers, he was defending Kobe when Harden was a member of the Thunder.

One example, that sticks out is when he was one of the All-Star games it was coming down to the wire and they started targeting Harden to try and get back in the game and as soon as he realized he was being straight-up targted he started locking-up fr. It was impressive and like said previously I've seen him do it previously and his pride will usually force him to do it, if he's being blatantly targeted. If it's not blatant like a screening action where other people could potentially help more he'll give minmum effort most times, but if it's clear they are targeting him like an iso on consecutive possessions he will generally lock-up. That's probably why teams don't just try to iso him all game, instead they just involve him in actions which doesn't effect his pride as much and keeps him lazy with minimal effort on defense.

PG, Kawhi and Russ aren't moving off the ball either, the problem with Harden is he is a ball stopper. He stops the offense and allows the defense to adjust way too much.
