I know it sounds like a clickbait title but I assure you, this video delivers. The AT2035 is widely considered the best sounding microphone in the Audio-Technica 20 series of microphones. Priced around $150, it's got a great sound to it but what if I told you there's another brand name microphone with almost the exact same specs, that sounds nearly identical (better actually) and can be purchased for less money... Interested?
Note: Audio-Technica calls their microphone series the 20 and 40 series as opposed to the 2000 and 4000 series like I called them in this video. I've always called them that so I'll likely not change soon.

@ShameLiarBased on my experience recording over the years with the Neumann KM 184 D, Neumann TLM 103, Neumann U87, Telefunken ELAM 251-E, AT4033a, AT3035, AEA R92, Royer R-122V, a pair of Rode NT-2as, a pair of Tech Zone Stellar X2 Vintages, Presonus PM-2s, a variety of budget mics from Shure, Pyle Pro and Behrginer... .. out of those, the best price-to performance ratio on large diaphragm condensers comes from the Stellar X2 Vintage (for a slightly more vintage sound) or the Rode NT-2a (if you like a slightly brighter sound or want a multi-pattern mic). The recordings I've heard from my peers made with the Rode-NT1 aren't that far off from the NT-2a, so that's another option, but I personally prefer the Stellar X2 Vintage at that price point.

As Curtis Judd pointed out earlier this year, two items that often don't suffer from tech obsolescence are good quality microphones and glass (lenses), often money well spent. Finding bargains on aftermarket microphones multiplies that return. A list of aftermarket microphones and prices would be a very useful item especially for those of us with limited knowledge of vintage microphones and souces.

Here's a big part that you're leaving out, the 2035 comes with a shock mount. A decent shock mount will cost you $50. I made the mistake of buying the at2020 and then later buying the shock mount. The mic was $100 and the shockmount was $50. I should have just bought the at2035. It's $150 and comes with a nice case, the mic, and the shock mount.
@SoundSpeeds

That is true but many used mics come with the OEM shockmount. Excellent point though. On another note, if you need a solid shockmount that will work with practically any mic, try the Rycote USM. Check out my review below: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jbtf8k_zN-k.html

Great comparison! The AT2035 sounds more open and vivid in my opinion. On the other hand, the sibilants .... :/
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 5 лет назад
Definitely less presence but also a lower noise floor despite the same self noise. I'm guessing it has to do with the slightly lower sensitivity.
@ellef9331
@ellef9331 5 лет назад
To be honest, I'm still not sure why the behaviour of the inherent self noise should be changing with the sensivity of the microphone. Maybe I have completely missed the point of your recent video. But to my understanding the transfer factor has nothing to do with the semantics of the recording. Enlighten me, in case I'm totally wrong here.
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 5 лет назад
@@ellef9331 Without going crazy here... the AT3035 is -33 while the AT2035 is -32. Their gain levels were set to +33 and +32 respectively. I level matched them to -23 LUFS and both mics required almost the exact same amount of level change - they were only 0.15dB off. Technically the levels are matched with the same noise floor X amount of dB below and they should be very close. Because one mic is more sensitive though, it will detect more sound at low volume. With 12dB noise floors, and the room noise floor higher than the volume level you'd hear that mic noise floor at, the sensitivity of the mics comes in to play as it pulls sound out of the noise floor. Identical dynamic ranges on the AT3035 and AT2035 means that the more sensitive mic will "hear" more at low levels. This is why the ultra quiet NT1 had a louder noise floor than the much louder C535EB.
@ellef9331
@ellef9331 5 лет назад
Thank you for your explanation! I think I got the point now. Basically, it all comes down to the „inertia“ (resistance to move) of the diaphragm when looking at those quietest sounds. I assume that microphones with a very low sensitivity come with a membrane system which has more mass or stiffness and thus needs more physical energy to produce an equal amount of loudness. Since there is more resistance with such diaphragms it is also likeley that they won't be able to pick up very quiet sounds that intensively. There simply is not enough energy to initiate a deflection of the membrane. Perhaps this is also part of the widespread assumption that dynamic microphones are less critical when working in untreated rooms where LDCs might pickup a lot of ambient noise. Although I see other factors that are much more important here (membrane isolation and polar pattern for example) ...
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 5 лет назад
@@ellef9331 The difference between dynamics and condensers is more the reason than gain. A Fethead or Cloudlifter will raise it to a sensitivity rivaling a condenser but that's not going to eliminate the reason for using a dynamic in untreated spaces. It comes down to dynamics being pressure operated versus condensers being pressure gradient. Watch my video explaining Polar Patterns for a detailed explanation but pressure operated mics are better in untreated spaces because it takes more vibration energy to move the diaphragm of a dynamic versus the condenser that is designed to pick up a larger range of subtle vibrations then amplifies them.

Hello, Just the kind of review I was looking for. Too good ! I need a lil help here. Which mic would you recommend for someone with a high pitched voice and has less power on the lower notes (like Bruno Mars) ?? Don’t want my voice to sound too thin as it already is. It should sound a little heavy or mature. Most of the mics tend to have a brighter profile so it is getting very confusing :( Here are some options:- se2200 , lewitt lct 440 pure, at2035, rode nt1 , aston origin. Or any other you’d like to recommend in this category ? Thank you in advance. Have a great day :-)

I preferred the 3035 on the lows and low mids, but it's very hard to compare the real topend without doing something like a key-test ( jangle and bunch of keys in front of the mics and see how they sound under compression, this is a very easy way to illustrate how a electret and real condenser compare on detail v distortion ) something for future videos perhaps ?

Thank you for the great video! I am involved in creating video presentations in a small studio and am facing some acoustic challenges that impact sound quality. Currently, I am using an old Sennheiser shotgun microphone, which unfortunately captures the sounds of the operating air conditioner. Given that my studio is located in a building with a central heating/air system, I cannot turn off the air conditioning during recordings. During my recordings, I stand, and my shotgun microphone is positioned on a tripod below my waist to stay out of the frame, creating a distance of approximately 30 inches from my face to the microphone. Given this setup, I need a microphone that not only provides high-quality sound for my voice but also minimizes the capture of background noises, including the sound of the air conditioner. Could you please recommend a type of microphone that would best suit my recording conditions? It's important to me that the new microphone delivers clarity and purity of voice sound while effectively suppressing unwanted background noise. My budget for this purchase is in the range of $300 to $700.
@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 4 месяца назад
I'm not sure I can recommend a solution for you that won't pick up the AC without hearing it and seeing the environment. My suggestion would be to point the microphone away from the strongest noise while keeping your mouth in front of the pattern and trying to acoustically baffle the noise so it's attenuated. For pointing a mic help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xg0X90t7qds.html then: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vyO5jkHt6hQ.html

Great Video! I wished i would have seen it back then. The Audio-Technica AT3035 would be a good catch indeed, if i was lucky enough to find it in my country on eBay. But since there is barely anything available, it's either the Audio-Technica AT2035 or the AT4040, if I want to stick to the brand. I noticed, that - on a male, somewhat deeper voice, but not yet voice-of-god (which is closest to mine) the AT2035 sounds a bit brighter, while the AT4040 sounds a bit warmer. And I am partial to a warm sound. That being said - while the difference is small enough to be only noticeable in direct comparison, it is till there and knowing that, i'd probably be not all-happy with neither, the AT2035, nor the AT3035, thinking about what nice the AT4040 probably could have been. But if I wanted the Mic to be an Audio-Technica one, i'd have to choose the AT2035 (or getting lucky on an AT3035) - just because of the price over here, in Germany. The AT2035 retails in Germany for 153 EUR ( ~ 185 USD ) - More expensive than the 149 USD in the US. But since it sounds way nicer than - say - the RØDE NT1A and almost the same price over here, it's still interesting. As for the AT4040... Here things get nasty. In the US it retails for 299 USD. That would be fine to me, even if i sold the same in EUR. But guess what the AT4040 retails for in Germany... 399 EUR ( 485 USD ) - OOF... So from the price to performance standpoint, for an Audio-Technica microphone, it would have to be the AT2035 for me, even tho i'd probably sound-wise would be more happy with the AT4040. But here comes a new challenger! Meet the RØDE NT1. And comparing the NT1 to the AT4040... Well, on the Booth Junkie's Voice, it was a toss. I could not hear any difference whatsoever. On a higher voice, the RØDE NT1 was slightly warmer and the AT4040 slightly clearer. So for my voice, the RØDE NT1 would be probably a tiny bit warmer, depending on how I pitch it. But in the end, it would be a toss anyways. But like I introduced the RØDE NT1, it is a new challenger, price-wise. But actually, over here in Germany, it completely destroys the Audio-Technica AT4040, being sold for 259 EUR ( ~ 313 USD ). So for me its picking between the Audio-Technica AT2035 and the RØDE NT1.
@SoundSpeeds

@SoundSpeeds
@SoundSpeeds 4 года назад
