So you talk about the iPad Pro 11” then 😁 Because it is the same (no A13 of course) but the size is the same. The screen is just bigger due to the lack of the touch ID 👍

I recently bought the iPad 7th gen 10.2 with 128GB and I love it! I don’t need all the capabilities of the iPad Pro, plus I like to use a keyboard and for the price of a tricked out iPad Pro I might as well buy a powerful laptop. The base line iPad does everything I need for personal productivity and entertainment.

I am an Android fan esp Samsung. Owned all their Note series phones and tablets, but iPad changed my mind. Now a fan of iPad wid the Pencil. Luv the ease of use writing and drawing. The paperlike protector helps too. And the apps are awesome. Note series have been around for some time, yet the apps which use the stylus efficiently? Naaah. Disappointed wid the Android apps. Sticking with iPad Air 3 Apple pencil 1 and paperlike. And phones remain Android....

I went through an IPad 2 (w/ Adonit Jot), IPad Air, iPad Pro 10.5, and finally a Pro 12.9 getting my doctorate. Using these with GoodNotes & Notability was lifesaving as I was able to locate, read, and organize research articles and course notes. For me, each of these were indispensable. I can’t imagine going through that without an iPad.

thank you for this testimony/review. I am a nurse in the Philippines and also a 30ish dad, i need to study for my NCLEX, however the materials for review is now online and the book is now on a soft copies. I was kinda hesitant to use iPad pro as one of my review material because i got easily distracted with social media and i think my mind is trained in a way to study and take notes on a paper. But i guess if everyone can do it. i can do it as well.

Alex Eusebio Good luck to you. I’m sold on Good Notes 5 because of the ability to search across all docs, including handwritten notes. Also, having all of my research, articles, and (most) books allowed me to study wherever I was. You are right however, distractions will always be there. Regards from the US.

Convinced me to get the iPad Air 3 a while ago, and have been writing notes and doing university work on it. Best decision I’ve made. I appreciate the little extra screen real estate and the lighter body as I only use it for notes and have a separate MacBook for typing and such. Very productive set up in my opinion.

With all due respect to Tom, I think he makes amazing videos with incredible content and I'm all for paperless note taking as well but I have to respectfully disagree to an extent. Let me start of by saying that I don't think any iPad, not even the iPad Pro can replace a fully functioning laptop. I'd definitely recommend getting a tablet as a secondary device and maintaining a decent laptop as your primary device be it a Windows laptop or a Macbook for our Apple users out there. I use the double tap feature so frequently so investing in the iPad Pro (2018) and 2nd Gen Apple Pencil was the best decision I made. Had Apple revamped the current iPad Air with a slightly more modern design and 2nd Gen Apple Pencil compatibility, I wouldn't be saying this, but they didn't. I'm not trying to dis the iPad Air and 1st Gen Apple Pencil as an alternative. In terms of performance, most people may not be able to tell the difference. However, If you're willing to make the compromise of charging the Apple Pencil by sticking it into the lightning port of your tablet or getting a separate charger for it and lose the double tap functionality which I honestly feel is so useful, then go for it. Let's also not forget that pairing requires you to stick it into your device each time you need to pair it to use it, between spaced intervals and let's be honest, it's only a matter of time before most of us would end up losing the cap that covers the lightning plug leaving it vulnerable to damage if it's not replaced. It's just not worth the hassle. Also, it's worth getting a 3rd party case like the Zugu case to keep your Apple Pencil stored more securely. Apple's keyboard folio is not really worth it for people particular about tactile feedback on a keyboard. To be honest, it's an accessory that should have been included for free with the iPad Pro models. The 2nd Gen Apple Pencil with it's uni-body design attaches magnetically to the side of the iPad Pro and both charges and pairs at the same time. On top of that, you're missing the industry standard USB Type-C port available on the iPad Pro where as every other Apple tablet uses lightning. Even if you're a student and you've made decision to move towards paperless note taking, most students may opt for the iPad Air because of the decent amount of screen real estate and decent price, but I'd still suggest investing a bit more and going for the iPad Pro. This is a device that will last you easily for years with it's powerful hardware. Having said that, the 12.9-inch variant of the iPad Pro is an oversized behemoth that honestly is only worth it if you need it for art or drawing of any kind or plan to use it as a laptop replacement. The 11-inch variant is perfect. If you're a college student, you're going to be doing a lot of homework, studying and note taking and you need a powerful tablet to get your work done. It doesn't matter if you don't plan to edit videos or photos on it, you'll feel truly satisfied investing a bit more and getting a better product. Students can easily blow $300 on things that are non-essential but the iPad Pro is an investment worth making especially if you stretch out that $300 over a 4 year period of college or even longer. If you truly don't care, actually like the antiquated design of the iPad Air and the inconveniences that come with the 1st Gen Apple Pencil, bearing in mind, it's not exactly still cheap to get an iPad Air and the Apple Pencil to boot, then by all means, go for it or even the regular iPad which supports the 1st Gen Apple Pencil. IMHO, it's worth setting aside a little money and making a wise investment as a student in getting a powerful tool that will help you with your school work.

Thank you so much for this very thorough comment! Especially for pointing out the USB-C connection. I agree with you and I stated it in my summary too. If money is available, the I would also recommend getting the iPad Pro. However as you also pointed out, the iPad Air is a good alternative. And there are many people who don’t have another $300 to spend. I know this from my own student times 😉

I mean air 2 from 2015 got IOS 13 this year. So other than procesor, everything is better on the Pro 2017 over air 2019.

Use my normal iPad just for note taking and web browsing. I bought it for less than $300 when it was on sale and it’s been used everyday for the last year. A few months ago, I was at a conference and did not have my pencil, I decided to flip my iPad horizontal mode and start typing like it was a keyboard. To my surprise it worked just fine for me. For those who do not need beefy specs the basic iPad is a superb value.

For a teaching or performing musician, there is really no contest. I have not regretted my 12.9” iPad Pro purchase once. It fits on a music stand; the music is big enough to read; and you can pencil in performance notes during a rehearsal. You can even attach a device to enable difficult page turns with a foot pedal. The sound is good enough to use in an instrumental lesson while a pupil is playing, and they can still hear it as loud as their own playing. The uses in that context are many and varied. I do hope it doesn’t go the way of the 17” MacBook Pro because many musicians would be gutted.

I currently use the 6th generation iPad with Apple Pencil support. It’s good and I use a Bluetooth keyboard when I need to, but if you go to Amazon, you can get the iPad Pro 10.5”, it’s priced between the iPad 7th generation and the iPad Mini 5. I loved that one and it has almost all the features of the iPad Pro 11” without the bezel reductions, Pencil 2 support, 12A processor and (although the 10A processor is wonderful), USB-C, and Face ID. The refresh rate is the same on the iPad Pro 2 and 3, so is the battery, keyboard connector, 4 speakers, and the screen itself. I may get one myself as I loved it, but sold it for parts because the screen got crushed.

Hello! I'm an high school teacher for 20 years now and I have an iPad Air 2, which, during the pandemic, proved really inefficient to grade my students' papers, as it isn't compatible with an Apple Pencil. I teach linguistics and literature, so it's really important for me to show my students what are their difficulties when grading their papers and even photos of handwritten papers from classes. So I started looking into buying the Air 2019, with 256gb, as it is compatible with Apple Pencil 1 and I am familiar with the Air line too. Then the rumors about the iPad Air 4 started and I hesitated and now I am considering the Pro 11', with 128gb, because of the 2nd generation pencil, the sound, the modern design and the pro-motion thing and usb-c entry. But I am very confused and don't know what to choose. I want to try to fully replace all my paper note taking during classes, put my students evaluations on the iPad by filling out my evaluation charts with the Apple Pencil during classes, writing small notes and correcting mistakes on the papers the students send me, and just use it to replace my traditional teacher's book. I normally don't use the cloud or google drive but I really like listening to music while I work, so I will probably want to store some of my favorite songs in the device's memory and some videos to show my students too. So, what do you think would be the best choice? I have a MacBook Pro for 6 years now and the Air 2 tablet for almost 5, so I don't plan to replace the new tablet any time soon. I also have an iMac for my main work at home, so I want a portable device that I can take to school everyday and can last for many years, without feeling it is outdated soon. For those reasons, especially, I'm inclined to go with the Pro 11' 128gb, as my budget is a bit tight and even the 256gb version is more expensive, but I don't know if I should wait to see how the new Air 4 will be like or just go with the current Air 3. If you could help me out, I would really appreciate! Thanks from Portugal!

Hi Paula, great question! My opinion on this is that it could always be too early or too late to buy a new device. Just happened to me when I bought the “new” 2019 Macbook Pro and then the 16” was released just one month later... For this reason I always wait for the autumn events by Apple are over before buying new Apple products. This being said you don’t do anything wrong buying an iPad now. It will still be a good device for years to come. However, as you waited for so long, maybe you just want to wait a little bit longer. In my Inner Circle we have a lot of teachers who went paperless in school. They can relate to your questions even better than me. I know many of them would go for an iPad Pro though. As it seems to be your main device in the future, I think it is a great investment. If you can use cloud storage you can go with the smallest version. However, my teacher members might have a different perspective on that. You can join us and ask them in the forum for more help here: www.pplmvm.com/joinus Let me know if you have any further questions. Happy to help! All the best Tom

If I’d had the money... I’d buy each next generation iPad and iPhone. I don’t. Last year I bought the iPad 6h gen (2018). Later the Apple Pencil 1st gen and got surprised with it’s performance. So far I’ve never regretted my purchase. It’s in between the Pro and the mini. Not to big, not to small. It’s perfect for making notes at work, during work making me paperless. I don’t believe my iPad will replace the laptop. However it’s the best addition I could get for becoming paperless. But... when I’m able in, say, five years buying the next generation... it’ll probably a 10.5 of 11 inch version with the best processor for the next five years 😊

I still don't know... I want to buy iPad for academic stuff like taking notes, mostly with Apple Pencil. And here we are, Air 2019 or Pro 2020 11". I have doubts that using Air&1gen Pencil = Pro&2gen Pencil. Also, it is mid 2020 now, I'm afraid that iPad Air 2019 is quite old stuff to buy specially if they will release iPad Air 4 soon (or maybe not).

You really need to audit your videos so that they progress and link in order. Once your uses the pencil with the tip units you have a paperless system that writes like a note pad with a real pencil. Job done the rest is flannel. Notability with its filing systems plus its multi device update does it all.

Aftab J. I still thinks the ipad pro is better. I bought it for the 120Hz refresh rate. Period. It makes huge different especially when you writing with pencil. Higher latency on other ipads give weird feeling if you want to be as close as writing on actual paper. Not to mention the terrible way to charge the pencil gen 1. You made the right choice my friend.

GUYS!! Instead of buying the iPad Air 3, BUY the iPad Pro 10.5” from 2017!! They’re basically the same exact price as of today. Same screen, 120hz, brighter, an extra GB of RAM, and 12mp camera WITH a flash! The only downside is that the chip is 17% weaker than the A12 HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Two weeks ago I purchased an iPad Air on Amazon. 256gb w/Cellular for a price that I am convinced they made a very short term error as the price suddenly popped up even lower than their Black Friday specials. After buying it that price never came back. I have a Home-based Networking business and take extensive notes on training, RU-vid videos, etc. I had grown so tired of paper notes which largely accumulated in several piles and never served my needs which was to have them readily available for review no matter where I was. I just started using Notability. I've taken to viewing RU-vid, etc., on my iPhone and using the Air for notes. The great advantage of this is I can easily take a screenshot on the iPhone and a little while later the photo is on the Air and I can get it in Notability and paste it right into my note, though I do wish there wasn't a several minute delay for photo access on the Air. It's also a bit annoying to always have to tap the iPhone screen to stop it from going black and needing to re-open. It would be nice if it would just continue playing. Perhaps there is a way to do this but I haven't discovered it yet. All in all, I'm very happy with the combined ability to take notes and place photos within. Tom, if possible, I'd love seeing what equipment, methods and apps you use in making/editing your videos. Any hints you might have on utilizing the Social Media mentioned above would also be great. That may be expanding beyond your Paperless Movement but I'll bet others would like your thoughts/expertise as well. Thank you for being such a great resource!

Thanks Charles for sharing your paperless story with us! Great idea taking pictures with your phone. To make it faster, you could send it via AirDrop directly to your iPadAir. Also of course you could make pictures with your iPad, although I guess you want to have better quality pics. There is a way to keep your iPhone “awake”. Just go to your iPhone settings / Display and Brightness / AutoLock to Never. 👍 Regarding RU-vid and video editing I switched from using Adobe Premiere Pro for 10 years to Final Cut Pro and it recolonized my workflows! Things are much more intuitive and you have only a one time payment. Of course you will need a Mac or MacBook Pro. Maybe at some point I will make a course how to make videos for RU-vid. But this won’t happen before 2021 I guess. If you want to stay updated and reach out to me personally or get help from the #PaperlessMovement community, consider to join the Inner Circle. Stories like yours would find their right place in our Inner Circle News feed 😃👍

I have iPad mini 5. I am perfectly happy with it. I wondered if I made a right decision, regarding the screen size difference, but I just wouldn't be carrying around iPad Air as much as I do iPad mini. It's crazy fast so it can replace my laptop when I'm on the move. iPad pro was never an option for me, it's too fragile to carry around. With mini I don't even use my phone that much.

I have the Air 3 to draw on it and watch some RU-vid, I love it so far and it’s also very good for gaming and browsing the web etc. nothing lags or anything and I seriously have no idea why or where you would use a better processor, I’d say if you really need a big screen with 120 Hz to draw one or really want one, get the iPad Pro but if you mainly want to stream media, go for the 10.2 regular one. I got the air because I was inbeetween the 10.2 with 128 GB and the base iPad Air and I decided to get the air because of the laminated screen and p3 color, it’s a joy to draw on so if you’re inbeetween these two, I’d definitely say go with the air, it has a better processor and will last you longer, if you have any questions feel free to comment, I can might help :)

it all depends what you want to do with an ipad, if you just want it for basic things like notes and things like that then yes go with something cheaper....but if you want to do more professional things like music editing or graphic arts or even gaming on it then for sure go with the pro ....so it just depends on ones needs.

256 would be better. I have iPad mini 2019 256gb and it was a great choice. It will get filled with files over time, so I think 256gb is a great choice. 128gb would be a great choice also, but there is no that option. For example, my PowerPoint app alone is now 8gb because I use it a lot and I have a lot of ppt files. 256gb is just safer option, so you can be sure that you won't have to sacrifice any app or files etc.

A slightly more personal question to you Tom what did you do your PhD in?.....Personally I have a iPad Pro 12.9 inch 2020 and the reason why simply use it as a desktop replacement in most part it does I would say at least 80% of it. Cannot replace completely not yet although in time it’s possible depending on the software. After months of searching I finally found the perfect iPad for my needs, the iPad Pro 10.5 from 2017. I am loving this tablet, and also had a great deal on it by paying 550€ for the 512GB version brand new. Basically it is an iPad Air 3 with more features and better hardware (except the processor everything else is better), at a better price, because in my country the Air 3 64GB WiFi only would’ve been 570€, so I thought, why not? :) Also I'm not concerned about updates 'cause of all the new iPads and the iPod with A10 processor, so with my A10X and 4GB of ram I should get other 5 years going ;)

I’ve got the iPad Pro 10.5” that I used for three years of undergrad and it was invaluable. It’s still fast and I’ll keep as a back up device. Best purchase I’ve made for school. I just got accepted in to medical school and purchased the 2018 12.9” iPad Pro. I plan to use it extensively over the next few years of medical school and beyond. The Apple Pencil 2 and USB-C are game changers, as is the full screen design. I bought the Apple Smart Keyboard folio as well as I plan to use the iPad Pro even more than before thanks to the increased functionality of iPadOS. I’ll use my MacBook Pro for exams (ours are computer based). In my opinion Apple’s iPad lineup is fragmented. iPad Air for most, iPad Pro for heavy users. Design both for Apple Pencil 2 compatibility and keep the lineup simple.
