I should have mentioned in the video, I'm running Bridgestone Blizzak's on my winter wheels and Continental ExtremeContact DWS 06 on my summer wheels.

Whilst the ride is Absolutely harsher than normal tyres I don't find the tyres are louder and they haven't worn any faster. That comes down to what RFT you get. I have the OEM Pirelli cinterato P7, very quiet and so far I have put almost 40,000 KM on them and they're only at about 50%. I have a pump like yours and a repair kit so I don't have to replace my RFTs if I get a flat. Here in Australia if you're get a flat with RFTs you supposed to replace the tyre, I don't intend on doing that if I can avoid it, especially as my tyres cost $330 each here!

Ken Lawton Definitely comes down to the specific RFT. On our 09 E92 335i, the stock Bridgestone potenza rtfs suck handling wise and make a lot of noise... So I’ll replace them with with Conti Extreme Contact Sports most likely. Our 14 S550 had Dunlop rfts which were smooth and quiet (it is an s class after all), but they wore down extremely fast

I work in a tire shop in Michigan and I can back everything you say about run flats. Something to consider, run flats don’t absorb impact the same. Seems like every bmw or Mercedes we perform a balance on, the wheels are out of round to some extent and no longer ride smoothly. Seems like the force of a pothole goes right to the wheels and suspension.

Hey Justin thanks for the video. Just looked at a used X3 that had replacement tires that were not run flat so was looking for alternatives. Just a word of caution to all, if you are not going with the run flat tires DO have a plan. Here is a weird but true story - I have a 40+ mile commute that is mostly on rural interstate in Wisconsin, one cold (-10 F) winter night I was headed home at about 7:00 PM when overtook a car that was billowing smoke, the driver was going 65 MPH on a flat tire and from the looks of it had been for awhile - apparently hell bent on getting someplace to get help. They showed no intention of stopping and I couldn't help them while they were going 65 down the interstate so I continued on my way thinking "damn I sure wouldn't want to deal with a flat tire on a night like this". Drove the final 30 miles home, pulled into my garage, got out and was walking around the back of my truck when I hear Ssssssssssssssssss coming from the the right rear, within a minute the tire was completely flat and I proceeded to change it in the comfort of my heated garage. Moral of the story: have a plan because you just never know. Oh, one more thing, you could have a long wait for roadside assistance in rural areas, especially when it is at night and -10, always keep that gas tank at least half full.

I have been driving for 40 years I have had a few flats but I have never had a catastrophic tire failure on regular tires. I bought a used bmw and in 4 months I "broke" 3 run flat tires. Switched over to regular tires -no problems. Everyone I have talked to who has rft seems to get flats at least once or twice a year. Thanks for the idea about carrying a pump with me.

I am sorry but this is terrible. You seem to be talking from a 2D point of view. Breakdown of alternatives 1) Carry a spare, not an option in many vehicles with runflats so makes no sense for anybody that needs any boot space. 2) Buy a compressor and a tyre repair kit, again makes no sense as it could be sidewall damage, or a large impact on the tyre which leaves both those options useless. Also some vehicles with runflats come with a compressor from factory. 3) Breakdown cover, well this is again poor advice when giving a reason to ditch runflats, depending on where you breakdown, you may or may not get home that night, recovery trucks operate on a KM's basis and depending on your insurance cover and Country this can vary massively. In Oz or Ireland anything over certain KM's with many insurances carry a heavy extra charge. Also time frames of pickup can be really bad depending on location of breakdown, and no certain means of getting home, I have had customers wait 3-4 hours on many occasions for pickup. Imagine having 2 small kids under 3 years old, it is late at night and you are returning back from the hospital, you damage your tyre but can safely drive the rest of the way home because you have runflats on. This happened to my wife when I was not able to go with her. My family returned home with no issues and my little baby was able to be fed and changed at home. I also have heard many stories of a similar types with customers I have dealt with. It doesn't matter if it only happened once, it happened and she got home. I also know in an emergency swerve I would prefer to have runflats on, where soft wall tyres can dismount from the bead much easier. I know the title is clickbait but I think people should be more informed to make decisions.

Awesome video Justin, I wish I found it months or even years ago. I hated run flats for all the reasons you talk about, ride quality, noise, cost. I switched to standard tires on my X3 and wow, what a difference. I keep a bottle of green slime as it’s water soluble and is ok for tire pressure sensors and a mini battery powered compressor that plugs into any 12v lighter plug. Both fit right in the storage compartment in the back. I wish I did this 40k miles ago when I spent over a grand on new run flats not to mention on my previous 328xi...

I gotta admit I have always been, and will continue to be, tempted by the idea of replacing my rft with regular tyres. But the thought of my wife and kids being stranded by the roadside along a busy motorway is the single most compelling reason why I am still keeping the rft.

I can relate so hard. We have 3 Mercedes E-Classes (2007, 2011, and 2014). The least comfort able of the 3 is the 2014 model. An easy solution to running non run flats is a product called RIDE-ON. It is a self sealing puncture additive that stays in liquid form under pressure and added benefit is no need to balance the tire. It self balances. Easy enough to go with a better more comfortable ride tire. AND if your tire is low, do too loss of a lil pressure, your TPMS will tell you and you can have the tire looked at easily enough.

I too use the pump and repair kit and keep a spare wheel in the garage. Carrying a bottle of soapy water is a good idea in case you have trouble locating the puncture. Extra load rated tires are something to consider for a little extra protection for your rims. I’ve replaced a total of five potholed wheels over the years between two BMWs. Three of them were my own fault.

I've had run flats on s few BMWs. They have always been performance models so tires were wider and seemed to be a magnet for nails and screws. I hate how its a game that's hard to get out of.... typically you get a flat, don't want the sudden unplanned expense to replace all 4 so you buy that one new run flat, rinse and repeat. So normally I wait until my set of run flats need replacement and get conventional performance tires. When I do encounter a leak/flat, I use a small compressor and I also have road side assistance. I don't bother with the patch kit, because usually putting some air in gets me to where I need to go for a permanent solution.

Tnx 4 video! But I prefer run-flat. This technology helped me lots of times. My life-hacks: little lower air pressure, smaller the radius (16” on 1er, 17” on x3, 18” on 5er). Frankly speaking modern run-flat tires are very comfortable compared with those that produced 10 years ago. Also modern suspensions are better adopted to run-flat. I have plenty of comfort on 5 series g30 with 18” rft tires. But i’m sured that your experience is a quite valuable for 10+ years old bmw’s.

Justin I've changed from run flats to normal tyres about 12 months ago after owning my 3 series lci over 4 years.I can honestly say I 100% agree with you,The drive and feel of the car is much softer and in my opinion better grip in the corners because of the softer walls that allow a little flex.Anyway I've simply added a space saver (spare tyre)which is really thin and hardly takes up any room. This in my opinion was the best option as just like runflats once fitted you can only drive around 50mph yet continue your journey.

Over here in the UK sealing out your run flats for normal tyres is classed as altering your vehicle which you have to notify the DVLA which in turn increases your insurance premiums, if you don't inform them and have an accident your insurance is void.

Many videos showcase the beauty of BMW and I have wanted one for over 15 years and finally got one but the ride is so rough I prefer my Honda Accord. I regret buying a Z4 that is so uncomfortable to ride in. I will look into getting regular tires and saw lots of comments stating it was the best mod they made on their car. The runflats, on Dallas freeways, makes it a very unpleasant ride. I hope the regular tires will change this or else I will be selling the z4 which I love on looks but not on ride. I truly appreciate the artistic design on the outside but the inside is driving experience on runflats is deplorable. I've had 3 "flats" over 4 years and on all occasions I drove to the tyre shop and got them to plug the tyre and I've driven away 100% no problems. Everyone says don't plug a run flat, it's dangerous. I call bullshit, it's 99% safe as long as the sidewall is not deformed on the tyre because of excessive flat tyre driving. Before my E90 I had a Honda Civic and it was notorious for the tyres breaking seal from the rims under hard cornering. Because the runflats have supported sidewalls I've never had a tyre break it's seal no matter how hard I throw the car into a corner. RFT's also stand up much better to kerbing (when she drives my car) because they are so stiff on the sidewall. My civic was always having it's sidewalls chewed up.

BMW didn't have the tires and I couldn't find anyone to fix it or replace it. When I got back home, Les Schwab fixed it. Because of the spare issue I replaced them at 40K. 7 years later, I pick up another small nail, but because it was closer to the edge "they" won't fix it. The tire still had plenty of life, so I added Slime and it is working fine probably 2K miles later. I do carry the compressor and patch/plug kit also. Next time, I will probably go with real tires as I agree how often do you get a flat. I'm thinking adding slime to any tire is a smart thing either tires.

Hi Justin, I have just replaced the normal tyres on my BMW 320i that the previous owner had fitted, with Bridgestone Turanza ER300 205/55 R16 91W Run-Flat tyres. After all the not so good comments on RU-vid about Run-Flat tyres, my wife and I were expecting a harsher ride. I inflated the tyres to the BMW's recommend pressures for my car of 2.1 kPa on the front set, and 2.6 kPa on the rear tyres and we were both impressed quite and surprised at the little difference in ride quality and noise of the previous tyres compared to the Run-flats. The benefits of run flats for me are, first my wife can carry on driving at night or in bad weather with a flat tyre , and second we do not need the weight of a spare wheel, jack, and wheel brace to carry around on the oft-chance that we might get a flat tyre. So I bought my BMW used, it has run flats on it, the previous owner said when he took it in for its MOT (yearly inspection in the UK) the garage told him the tyres were a recommended change but would last till the next MOT. However, when the lockdown is over in the UK, my plan is to get my car fully serviced and to possibly get the tyres changed to non run flats depending on what the garage suggest.

I run Bridgestone S001 run flats on my BM. Saved me the first week I had the car. Totally worth the extra cost in my opinion. I was able to get to work on time and was no hassle getting it changed. I drove for about 3 days before getting it sorted. Didn’t even notice I had a flat if it wasn’t for the pressure alert. I thought I would be 'responsible' and keep runflats when I bought my e89 Z4, but decided to change and have never looked back, luckily haven't had an issue. On non runflats the car is better in every way - more compliant, better braking and super grippy (went with Pirelli in front so it might be that and not just the non run-flatness to be fair). In my country, you're either in a city where there's a tire shop every 5 blocks (in which case you can go there if you notice your puncture early) or you're doing stretches between city centers that are 100s of kilometers away so runflats would be no help anyway. They make sense in tightly developed first world countries, but I really wish we could just get a spare wheel well and a spare again - it does make me a little nervous to just hit the road in my Z4, vs my old e46 330i that had a full size spare. Now I do the thing we're all supposed to, I walk around my car before every trip and just check my tires quick. Few punctures are so bad that they completely deflate a tire instantly. But maybe I'm just getting old, I also wish good cars were still manuals and still had cigarette lighters - even if you don't smoke they're still more useful than a 12V socket - Am I going to plug a camping fridge into my Z4?

Runflat tires are safer if you get a puncure at high speed - you'll just see info on cluster what tire pressure is low and you'll have to reduce speed. If you're on autobahn, you feel much more confident - you can just drive to the next exit without having to pull over. With runflat tires you have also very low risk of damaging tire sidewall (it's much thicker), so tire blowout is almost impossible - it's very important when you're cruising at high speed - blowout at 200 km/h is the last thing you want :-)

Everyone said to ditch them cuz of the ride, so I did replace them with all season grand touring rubber but this car does not have a spare (that's the reason it came with run flats) so I bought an air pump and have that & a can of fix-a-flat in the trunk area & pray I don't get a puncture since I WILL be stranded. I hear Bridgestone came out with a tire called DRIVEGUARD which is a run flat but supposedly gives you quite a better ride quality than traditional run flats. I believe the pros far outweigh the cons and are a great safety feature, especially when driving in congested areas and freeways. Our X3 rides fantastic and is very quiet when the tires have the proper air pressure. The run flats have already paid dividends when we got a flat while driving on vacation through a horrible storm near the Smokey Mountains after a fallen branch poked a hole in a rear tire. We were able to drive a few miles to a small town and get the flat fixed which saved us from having to empty our luggage during that storm to replace the tire. I'm sold on run flats! In case of an emergency where I couldn't get to a repair shop within 50 miles (which is rare), I keep slime and an air compressor in the vehicle.
