It's still worth the money if it doesn't hurt your wallet too much. Yeah it may be a bit over priced but u can't beat having the Seiko name and the 38mm is so sweet. Enjoy.

It being 38mm is a big deal. Not a lot of small divers in this price point. I bought one because I don’t own a SKX013 (yet)

@@alreawon1212 100m water resistance means nothing without a screw down crown (like this Seiko SKX). The most important difference between 100m and 200m specs it's the screw down crown. A watch without that it's simply not build to take a strong amont of water and go swiming (even without diving), that's just facts. So yeah this SKX is definitly not a diver at all.

Orient eats Seiko's lunch now in the affordable diver category. Orient has the quality (both in build and materials), brand history, warranty, and diver-certified 200 meter water resistance.

Let's NOT forget that Seiko OWNS Orient 😉😂 I got a recent SRPE61 and immediately upgraded the strap with a case fitting StrapCode Asteroid (BADASS bracelet and I own at least a dozen StrapCode bracelets), and while it's NOT as well built as my SRP775 and SRPE05 King Turtle, that's exactly why I love it. If Seiko would've given it a sapphire crystal AND screwdown crown, it would've been 10/10 for me because the grey sunburst dial is SOOOOOOOOOOOO beautiful 😱🤯😲 Now I realize I can get a sapphire crystal from Long Island Watch, but I'm not doing that until my Hardlex/Mineral gets beatup. So if it had a screwdown crown, it would've been one of my top 3 watches of all time. I can pair it with the StrapCode Asteroid for formal wear and an Archer grey canvas strap for wearing it everywhere else. Anyway, I do agree that other watches can be found for about the same price with better specs. I personally LOVE my two Spinnaker automatic watches, and I'm oddly enough wearing one right now. It's the 'Croft' SS/IP coated to look like brass with the seconds subdial between 4 and 5 o'clock, and I challenge you to find a better looking watch for the price of that (around $300). I also have a Fleuss, but it doesn't get much use because of it's acrylic bezel. Spinnaker DID miss the mark on that one. With a sapphire bezel i would wear the shit out of it hahaha 🤣

Here is the the definition of a watch: Noun A small timepiece worn typically on a strap on one's wrist. Making the Apple watch a watch. Now unless I’m working out I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing one casually. I like traditional watches quartz and mechanical. But let’s not try to morph downplay or try to beat around the bush just because we don’t see as a replacement for typical watches .The apple watch is most certainly a watch.

@@achraftahir The Apple watch is actually referred to as wearable tech. It's main purpose is not time keeping. To qualify as an actual watch it's main purpose would have to be time keeping. As I pointed out my phone displays the time but it's not a watch, it takes photos and videos but it's not a camera, it can perform a lot of tasks that my laptop can but it's not a computer. A iPhone is NOT a watch ! 👍

Dude this is a old school mechanical watch, 38mm was the proper size for watches in the 20th century. This heavy oversized XL watches with 44mm and more just came into fashion in the late 2000s. G-Shock started it.

@@korien8976 You know I used to scoff at acrylic watch crystals as cheap. But unlike mineral glass, you can polish out scratches easily yourself and make them look as good as new. You get a scratch in Hardlex or other mineral crystal you better get used to it.

I have the black one and I like it. I got it with 25% off and I think it ended up being a reasonable price, still a tad too much maybe. But it’s comfortable, it looks good, and I just like it. That’s all I need for a daily beater.

I adore my Seiko’s, my trusty SNK809K1 was my daily work (Military) beater for years and is still one of my favourites in my collection. I purchased the new 5 Sports and returned it for a refund. It felt no better than a £5 Eaglemoss replica. I was so disappointed. That disappointed I broke ranks and bought a Citizen Pro Diver.

as someone who got into watches from getting the first gen apple watch, went through seiko, up to omega, and BACK to the apple watch, the answer is YES! the price has to be $200 or under IMO to get people into the hobby. my first foray was because i had an extra $50 and wanted a watch i could pass down to my kids(yep, wanted it all for $50) anyway, as i learned and discovered mechanical and swiss and all that, i still didn't wanna spend over $200. back then you could get an SKX for that. a 2824 for that. almost anything we'd now see for $700 and up. prices are just ridiculous now honestly.

As a self-admitted Seiko-path, I agree with your assessment of the Tiffany dial 5KX, on all counts. Seiko could have saved a lot of time and effort if they moved the SKX line into the Prospex line, offered all these colors, still with ISO certification, updated the movement to the 4R36 and given us a Sapphire crystal. Instead we get cash grabs and half-assed ness.

When Seiko replaced the beloved SKX certified diver with the 5KX, it was a signal of things to come. I’ve loved Seiko as much as Casio most of my life but Seiko should be taking note of what Casio is doing right. To be fair, the original Seiko 5 were bargains but Seiko’s current pricing and mingling of models, is providing neither quality nor value.

@@jamesk9321 i have the 90s 007 from my granddad. Works well, fantastic actually but these are waaay overpriced, conforming to the tiffany trend and basically nothing got updated. Its a scam for new watch collectors. And seiko isn't known for their quality control with their movements. Why have a display caseback?

I think if you're someone who loves the 5KX/DressKX watches (like me) and also have a smaller wrist (like me) these new 38mm versions are worth a look. I've got a 6.25 inch wrist and the original size 5KX works well (it's the magic of that case), but I'd love to try the 38mm to see if it works even better.

I love that they've gone 38mm with this one, but I have to agree with the consensus here, way too expensive when compared to alternatives. Once Seiko release a 'pilot' series 5 in this size, and they're heavily discounted (or Seiko seriously boost the spec) then I'll consider one.

Honestly, most Seikos today make microbrands more attractive. Whether at the same price point or more below $1000, microbrands are offering more and at better prices than Seiko. Above $1000, Seiko makes some beautiful ⌚ that have no business costing what they do. Shame. Not sure who is minding the store at Seiko these days.

The 5KX is honestly the only hyped budget watch I can get behind. Most people new to watch ownership would probably look for something fun that will show a bit of their personality and I feel that Seiko 5 Sports is the best way to do that given the hundreds of different flavors the line offers. The best part is that it’s still cheap as far as watches go and it provides a good introduction into the world of mechanical watches. Maybe that’s my bias as someone who went down that route but I feel like it gave me a good introduction before moving on to bigger and better watches.

The last Seiko I bought was the brown time sonar and I immediately modded it. I put a lumed kanji date wheel in, a red AR sapphire crystal, and a super engineer bracelet. I still don't think they are great watches. The best bang for your buck Seiko is probably the Islanders from Long Island watches now lol.

You will be able to buy a new old stock skx for a few thousand in a few years... if you can find one. Nothing that came out on the market from Seiko in recent years (5kx line, Turtle, Prospex) or other models are like skx..whatever some say. It is already considered vintage since it is from 1996, but they are also rare because no one really sells the SKX007 anymore, being very collectable. It will be quite difficult to catch an unmodified skx. I personally just bought 3 new old stock from an individual who had 6 skx007, brand new, $240 each. When I called to get more..they were already sold...

I still wear my SKX 009 Pepsi as my everyday wear, must be about 10 years old now, can't remember how much, about £120. The newer Seiko's are too expensive, i'd rather buy a Swiss brand with that money.

It's the bracelet: I have an Anniversary Seiko 5 (Spacewalk) which came on a bracelet with hollow links, but at least the seams are fine enough for me not to be *too* put-off. But the bracelet on the new one here doesn't even look that good: if they offered it on a good strap and knocked a few bucks off the price, they'd have an unqualified winner.

Unfortunately Seiko has chosen to neuter the functionality of it's entry level SKX series while increasing the price. $325 for a watch with an 4R36 movement is like you said Russ, $100 to much. I have two Seikos and don't intend on purchasing another.

I don't think I have seen a recent Seiko 5 that doesn't have a misaligned bezel. Seiko, and especially Seiko 5, are no longer a good value proposition in my opinion.

Its a fine little everyday watch just don't take it near water. Without a screwdown crown it's not an entry level dive watch at all. I wouldn't even take it into the pool.

The thing is, is that it’s not a dive watch. And these new Seiko 5s are not meant for a diver market. This is for style. These are fashion accessories- more or less targeted to younger people. And they build them to specifications which are perfectly fine for the average person. Besides, if people want dive watches, there are other places within the Seiko brand, as well as it within the Seco umbrella for those people to go to.

I have never owned or wanted to own a Casio or a Seiko watch and looks like that will never change, but not related to money or the case back. That 5 ( from seiko 5) in front ruins the design for me, just like a full word CITIZEN, fk that...The original 007 was not just stupid heavy but also ruined by the big flat bezel. The titanium versions have less refined dials and cases - sure you can custom change some of them but I don't feel needing a Seiko anywey and buying a prospex just to customize it's nonsence. After Seiko Epson started being closer to Orient watches, some Seikos like this ones started to look better, but not enough for me. I have 5 Orients, 4 of them atypical and very refined, and a black ray first gen that I still use daily.

However, not only does MWC provide informative videos (free content might I add) for those of us who share his passion for all things watches, he makes us smile and laugh whilst doing so. It’s the old saying, if you can’t say anything nice……….. Keep the vids coming Russ and don’t change!
