Couldn’t agree more, Nintendo getting rid of the virtual console to force you into a yearly subscription service just to play some of the classics is one of the most greedy things they’ve ever done imo. They just see us as walking, talking atm’s.
Its just stupid that why i cannot use that 50€ to buy games that i want to play and i want to play them offline too. Most of people allready bought those retrogames multiple times before. How many times nintendo makes people buu those same old games.
Unpopular opinion. Just get an emulator and Nintendo 64 and Sega genesis ROMs.. If Nintendo is not going to provide a service that is very good or flat out take down fan games and not listen to their fans I’m not going to support Nintendo i’m propiracy. #ProPiracy
Unpopular opinion alert, I actually like just having the games this way vs paying say $10 for the same game multiple times, the old way of things was actually legitimately terrible because they could constantly nickel and dime customers paying for Mario 1 3 times. You also don’t get the definition of value, what maybe a terrible game to you is a classic for someone else. Let’s go your way and pay “$10” for every N64 game on WiiU eShop that is currently on NSO-Oh wait, that balloon’s the value right there. Same goes for the NES and SNES games on WiiU and 3DS eShop’s, as for “not owning the DLC”, any and all subscription services out there function identically 9 times out of 10, this is literally nothing new. The biggest problem is you kept equating the price to the Australian Dollar value rather than also adding the or your regional variant. Also people don’t need to watch to the end when the title gives away your opinion right then and there. For me, since I own both Mario Kart and Animal Crossing and intend to renew, it already pays for itself alongside everything else that came with base NSO. As for another thing, the darkness slathered all over the WiiU versions of certain console’s Virtual Console games is pretty unforgivable as well
@@smg4reblooperd182 Its hard to tell if you are agreeing with my points or the videos points. Because WiiU VC also had issues with F-Zero X that actually had to be patched, which was the only time any VC game was patched to my knowledge
@@smg4reblooperd182 Then why waste my time? The videos option is utterly the same as a number of the other detractors with literally nothing new to add and worse, this is after the problems the previous detractors complained about were fixed. If you can find an actual N64 and literally every game currently and planned to be featured for $30 then be my guest, otherwise, its way better now than it was at its launch.
I mean sure, it’s all well and fine that you enjoy the subscription service but lots of us would much prefer to outright own the specific older titles that we want rather than rent the entire catalogue for a year at a time and it sucks that we don’t have that option. I don’t see any good reason why both the subscription service and virtual console couldn’t coexist. Everybody could win but Nintendo’s just being greedy (shocking, I know).
Pretty much if you don't like it Nintendo aren't giving you many options other then piracy wii u shop is gonna shut down in less then a year and that is the only place you can still outright buy n64 games at least with out spending like 50 bucks or more on a used cart.
@@brandonwombacher1615 cause then people who don't like it simply won't buy it so they get less money compared to if they were consumer friendly. Pretty much don't give people options then some won't buy it or just pirate it.
@@elvinobiakalusi7505 yes because Nintendo already made a GameCube and Wii emulator for switch with 3d all stars so there’s literally no reason those consoles can’t show up
I think NSO Exp Pack value is getting there. But you make a lot of good points. I’m hoping for another wave of N64 games after Pokémon Snap and Kirby 64 come out (even if they’re still released monthly) and Game Boy Advance. Then I’d be more likely to renew.
I agree. Value is definitely coming. Just feels lacking. I'm mainly upset at the pricing, but with Banjo Kazooie, the 3 DLC and having Multiplayer N64 will be worth it at the end. Id also like GBA to come. Maybe the 50 will be (more) worth it by 2023. So for most, Expansion Pass isn't worth it "yet". (Hopefully)
Thank you for making this video! I've been wanting the Virtual Console to return since they got rid of it. Picking the games you want and buying them is a way better model than this garbage. Except I would love to see them revamp the service. You buy the game and keep it for life across this and all future platforms. If I buy Mario 64 on the Switch, I can redownload it on the Switch 2. I'd also love it if Nintendo just put all the games up at one time with this service, no more drip feed. Why keep their classic catalog behind a lock and key? They could be making easy money and I'd be willing to invest in these classics if I knew I could get them digitally, but get to keep them for life. Make it happen Nintendo! Your fans deserve better!
Honestly, Virtual Console is just as bad anyways since they could say, only give you a set amount of titles and that’s it, you don’t get any other choice. Besides, some previous iterations of VC (particularly NES/SNES on Wii, 3DS and WiiU, as well as N64 on WiiU) all had obnoxious dark filters plastered all over the games anyways making them look worse than before. So heavy rose tinted glasses for a subpar at best service
@@AWMonopolyMan At least you could pick the games you actually wanted, didn't have to pay an overpriced yearly fee and it would have made more sense on the Switch itself seeing how its also a handheld and forcing the user to check online to see if you can play a game on a handheld is pretty stupid. Virtual Console isn't perfect, but it would have been leagues better than the trash we have today.
@@TurkeyFaceX You could… If Nintendo bothered to offer them. Both services are similar in the you really don’t get to pick what the company offers you mentality. If its that overpriced for you (which lets be real $50 for an entire year is better than the same price for less offered time so to say), then here’s sagely advice, don’t pay for it and either just go with the base service or better, just play on PC and kick rocks if you really don’t want to play for online. To be completely fair, Game Pass/Game Pass Ultimate and PS+ Extra and especially Premium are way more expensive for the exact same timeframe. (That being $100, $120, $120 again and $180). I may sound harsh or “wrong” but sometimes, reality really is stranger than fiction and value is truly in the eye of the beholder
@@AWMonopolyMan It really depends on what you want and what you are willing to pay. I would rather have a Virtual Console service and buy a handful of games, probably well over $100 worth, but after 2~3 years time it would be cheaper than paying for a yearly subscription at $50. The $20 plan works just fine being affordable, but the online play is awful at any tier and I've had my fill of most NES and SNES games over the years, so personally its not for me. And I'm not the kind of gamer that puts enough hours into games to consider the Playstation or X-Box plans either (sidenote I do have a PS4 regardless for a handful of single player exclusives). Maybe I'm in the minority here, but the price is too much and its too many games. I'd rather pay for games individually and enjoy each one at my own pace. I don't have a handful of hours a day to game, I have a handful of hours a week if I'm lucky. Actually you hit the nail on the head with PC, cause if I'm playing online its on Steam. Can't beat free online, lol. I just want Nintendo to give us access to their vast library again without the drip feed and allow us to keep the legacy games we purchase indefinitely. I've paid for Mario 64 four times already and I'd appreciate it if the fifth time I can actually keep the game going forward on future platforms. I don't need a massive library of legacy games, just the ones I really want to revisit and maybe check out a few I haven't had a chance to try like Super Mario RPG as an example. Virtual Console is a much cheaper service unless you want to buy half the catalog, and who has the time to play all those games anyways? Seriously, you know in the long run it would be the better value especially if you got to keep the game on future platforms like I'm suggesting. Not to mention paying for an online service that hasn't been improved upon since they started charging is sickening. I shouldn't have to play Smash Bros. online at 15 frames a second plugged into an ethernet port almost half the time.
@@TurkeyFaceX Which is never ever going to happen since corporations need to continue to make money so that’s just how it works, no company will ever let you keep a game on all future platforms it releases on, Remasters can certainly attest to that. And after paying for the same game multiple times (including Mario Kart 64 5 times, 3 on 64 Cartridge, once on WiiU and once on NSO (first payment counts only since that’s what it took to get on the service at all, renewel fees don’t count currently since it hasn’t even been a year yet)) I can certainly attest to being fine with this current service as is (I don’t need to be consistently reminded you don’t like it, I got it every time you mentioned it) but expecting a loyalty bonus is a fool’s wish unfortunately, no company worth their salt would ever do that (except Microsoft and their BC program if you have an actual BC disc compatible with the program). You will never ever convince me that the service is a ripoff, especially considering they actually technically added more value to it over time instead of less, remember, originally the games were only going to be there for like a month then be rotated out before backlash forced it to change.
I agree 100%. Even as someone who’s obsessed with Animal crossing, the service is a huge ripoff. The mere fact that you wouldn’t actually own the DLC, and that you’d loose access to it once they close down NSO at some point makes it an idiotic decision rather than just buying it outright. New horizons is a game I’m gonna be playing for years and years to come, and $50/year is gonna add up to several hundreds of $ in the long run, when I can just pay $25 once AND permanently own the DLC. And the N64/Genesis games mean absolutely nothing, since I have zero interest in them and they can easily be emulated for free anyways. There’s literally no point in the getting NSO expansion unless you enjoy wasting money
I think they can sweeten the deal if they include more things like GBA, and GCN. Also they def need to get in the Mario party original trilogy into switch online.
@@alphonsejohnson5601 Yes but not much reason not do do it anyways since no one has been busted for downloading ROMs only the distribution of them. Because of this nso feels like a joke all this money for a few N64 games you have been able to emulate for ages.
@@alphonsejohnson5601 Also i'ts morally right to pirate from this company considering how they treat youtube creators. And the fact that they are taking away access to games people own on the wii and dsi.
The expansion pack is worth it if you get the family plan and split it with friends. Between my 2 friends and my wife we each pay $20 a year. So you don’t even feel the price.
Also maybe an unpopular opinion but I never liked the anti gravity bits in Mario Kart - feels too floaty I much prefer the way Crash Team racing controls.
Only Buying the Standard 20 Dollar Version for the Online for Splatoon 2, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Mario Strikers Battle League, Splatoon 3, Mario Golf Super Rush, SNES and NES
Problem #1 seems to be a personal one, games are timeless, it's not just nostalgia, just because a game is old, doesn't automatically make it boring, that's the kind of thing you would hear from someone that sees games as ''fast food'' generic entertainment and not creative works. I'd rather play Sin & Punishment than call of duty 74 or whatever random modern live service game. Also, the DLC is supposed to be added value alongside everything else, no one's going to get the expansion pass just for the DLC, take me for example, I pay for the expansion pack mainly because it's the only way to get not just good, but the best quality of Genesis re-releases this gen, and the best ever made by M2 with rollback netcode, and I get to play the DLC of two games that I care about for free as a bonus.
What you said about the controls feeling wonky and how there’s lag when playing the games on NSO was similar to what I thought of. But when I’m playing my N64 games on an emulator on my PC, I don’t get any wonky controls and laggy issues.
I don't get it, 60 a year with xbox or playstation gets you online and mainly crappy free games, nintendo comes and does a 50 a year and you get most of the classics for nes, snes, n64 and Sega, its honestly a banger of a deal
The one thing that's frustrating about it is people using Iwata's death as a weapon against it in a disgusting and disturbing way that disturbed a bunch of innocent people online. I've seen a lot of ungrateful selfish people do it and it's really sad and disturbing. Sadly there are no more respectful Nintendo fans out there. Cares about the developers respects their manners and other stuff. Hell they just keep using dead people as a weapon and it needs to stop.
The problem is not the content on offer, which is great for anyone who values retrogaming, or the lack of manuals (who is offering manuals these days anyway?). The problem is not being given the option to buy the single titles instead of the subscription. This would have never ever happened with the Nintendo of Satoru Iwata.
I don’t understand why Nintendo thinks it’s so necessary to have us pay yearly for a subscription service that is not good in fact, it’s terrible! I’d rather pick and choose which games I want to play rather than Nintendo telling me you can only play these games for a certain amount of time. Well it’s a good thing that I switch from Nintendo to Xbox. Hopefully one day Nintendo and The Nintendo fan boys Well realize hey, this is not good. I want my money back.
I've looked at the sub service and honestly I'd rather just buy the games I want for the various prior generation consoles. Right now I can't justify the added cost when there are so few games available.
I honestly don't care about the expansion pack, I won't buy it..ever. If VC happens and nobody buys the expansion pack anymore than I won't even be phased. All the dlc will stop being yours after a year and so will the games. Sometimes you do want to just play a game once, but other times you wish to own it at all times. Metroid GBA games come to mind.
You know, I was on the fence about the service but after watching this video, I changed my mind on the NSO. Besides, all the games that I want to play I still have the original carts that I bought back when they first released. Nintendo wants to punish people for going outside their way of doing things, but they don't want to give us the option to buy what we want at a fair price and that we are not RENTING these games. Like Disney they tend to be stingy when it comes to their legacy content and constantly closing shops that benefitted people. Thankfully I will keep the retro games I do have and not have to worry about any annoying subscription. And as for my OLED Switch, I will just use that for the exclusives and the Zelda and Mario games.
I'm dying to play Majora's Mask but have resisted getting this. It's just not attractive to me. If it were cheaper, yes. There are games on that list I've never played. But knowing how rare it is for Nintendo to add to the list, it's just not worth the money. I already have the regular subscription & I don't use it often. I just don't like paying for access. Plus, when you look at how much better the illegal versions of the Zelda games are, it's hard to want to pay Nintendo for a substandard version of what you can get for free. It's the reason many people would rather make their own cheese burger rather than eat the garbage they sell at McDonald's. Is Nintendo becoming the McDonald's of gaming?🤔
I went halves with family members we each paid 40.00 definitely look into doing that as it will be the best value to get others on board íf possible...
NEEDS PUBLIC LOBBY! I want to get up at 3am and be able to body ppl at mariokart64 without having to setup frikkin appointments annoying friends.. I want my subscription money to go to the maintenance of a quality server that makes online play with others a breeze. Its 2023 dude, the 90s are wayyyyy behind us.. Step it up, nintendo!
How did Nintendo not get the controls to run better and not feel weird cause on the Wii and Wii u virtual consoles I had very very little to no issues with the n64 controls.
while I totes hear ya, I still very much look forward to upgrading my subscription soon enough, as the value is definitely there, and $50 as a yearly bill, not monthly, is chump change at worst, lol ;)
Definitely would've bought it monthly,so i can stop when im done but $50 for 365 days just to play a little Zelda and Mario 64 for awhile,no man I'm good. Until I just say screw it and get it on impulse at some point in the future. Don't take it down just yet,let me sit on it for a second more.
TBH, I don't even need those retro games since I have the complete catalog up to N64 and NDS. I don't really mind going legit, but moves such as these make it a whole lot less enticing. Only thing I really wanted was the cloud save and even that is half baked because, in their infinite wisdom, they opted to make cloud saves incompatible with any pokemon game.
Widescreen support should be default on the games.... But yeah... i bought the 50 bucks expantion pack for a year... well, lets see how it goes and i know 9 10 doh tries to ripp me off but not trying to look like they ripp me off
I rather buy a used GameCube or hack my wii U and load it with every single nintendo game available for all consoles. Zelda games are the only thing that adds value to this $60 scam. The switch online service sucks ass
@Tech Finder: You skit is wrong about the wiiU e-shop and 3DS e-shop, you just can't add any fund in august 29, 2022, that is the day it expires, but funs you already have in your Wiiu e-shop and 3DS e-shop only expires March 27, 2023 so this is when it close, however online play will still work pass that date.
Too bad the Nintendo 64 one is constantly sold out, and that’s the one that IMO you need the most because of the wonky controller setup. Shame that there’s a bunch of scalpers
@@ryanr27 Keep checking their site. Others were sold out for a while and recently became available. I use the NES controller for lots of games that don't require a joystick.
@Tech Finder: the tip you give is fine if you do not want to expension pack, but for me I wanted the expension pack, so for me I'm not paying full price to keep the DLC forever when all, or almost all is not release yet, and also still pay for the expension pack, and also the new DLC track are free if you play online, to play online base plan, or you keep it free by looping the free trial with platnium point in the web site call my Nintendo, but because your looping the free trial you will not have full access of the base plan, in free trial mode, your not allowed to access online only Tettris 99, and pac-man 99, your not allowed to buy nes, and neither snes controler in free trial mode, and if Nintendo lock mario kart 8 deluxe new dlc into the base plan to be able to purchase it, you will not be able to purchase it in free trial mode. but then they will only show-up randomly in the vote, if you want to guarantee a better chance of playing theme in free trial mode, start an online friend match with someone who already bought the DLC, or have the Expension pack.
When u have the retro game sellers selling the original paper Mario for $80+ Mario 64 for $50+ Mario kart 64 for $60.... Yeah I rather pay $50 a year and play the game as much as I want. Not to mention if u even want to buy a N64 console for $90+.... Also the modern games give u maybe 9 hours worth of gameplay and have to shell out another $60+ for dlc and not to mention the extra micro transactions.... Stick to PC or your Xbox and stop bashing on the casual gamer
If you are not pirating or “emulating”. Playing these titles with quality and on the go, this is a great service. A lot of these games cost 💲 the yearly price of the service for a physical copy of one game.
While that's true, they were/are fairly cheap on Nintendo's older digital stores. My point is it is bizzare this will be the only way to get them. Especially considering there are so many titles missing.
@@tobiasgvenus Yeah, like I wanna play the games with darkness filters all over them, never again. They are the inferior versions, especially WiiU N64 games, like OoT
why cant nintendo just make a virtual console for the switch, i mean yeah i get they want more money and the virtual console flopped on the wii u but if the switch online service ever shuts down they should let people still be able to play these games and being aloud to download them on your system
This guy is complaining that u have to buy a Subscription service for old games that cost a bunch now? Literally perfectly valid and some new games being free doesn’t mean anything about ppl who still or will potentially love those old games they still have plenty value
My point is the only way to play these games legally anywhere is through a subscription service that you have to pay for year on year. There are more consumer friendly ways to make old games available.
I literally just want majora's mask & Ocarina of time... why do i have to pay 60 bucks for this a year? (Especially when i could emulate it for free on my pc with custom textures.)
Oh no I already bought it. lol. I agree with all of these points. I think that’s why I didn’t buy it the first year it released. But I can’t live in a dream world where Nintendo is fair to its customers. I just see the proposition. Do you want to pay this amount of money to play these games? And I just said you know what it’s just money and I went ahead and bought the expansion. And I’m pretty satisfied so far.
The freedom of playing these are a plus. The negatives come from obvious holes in what's left out & why the DLC ❤is so complicated. Buy the DLC outright & don't complicate things.
2:01 NO IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE! If you look at the controls from NES NSO and Super Mario 3D All Stars, comparing these two to the N64 NSO emulation control scheme!
I love Oot and I was hoping Pokémon stadium and perfect dark was on it but it isn’t. Hope they actually start selling the content so I can own it. I bought the expansion pack cuz I haven’t play my childhood games in years n wen I play zelda oot the controllers buttons are weird. I’m trying to figure out how to talk to Navi n it’s not letting me. It says up button n wen I press it, nothing happens.
Exactly the problem with it I just wanted the Legend of Zelda oot and mm old school experience not a yearly pay with it because I want to keep it so that I can use it whenever with out wasting my money
"it's not actually 60 bucks, it's 59.95" I mean, as long as it's approaching 60, I still count it as 60 bucks, because reducing the price slightly is a marketing strategy.
So reguarding the mario kart dlc. Once you buy the dlc and not buy it as part of the expansion pack. You do get to keep all dlc tracks . So you dont have to re pay for them. Tho expansion pass users do have to pay a re occuring fee just to access the tracks . I just needed to clear that up. Cause, I had to call nintendo about how scummy the ads were for mk8 dlc
And ya I get that dumb opinion from blind Nintendo fans a lot on Twitter they say this is better than virtual console what how sounds like blind Nintendo fanboys rather rent retro games instead of I don't know owning the damn games what will they say I wonder when the online is shut down.
