I added shackles to both of my tow vehicles years ago and secured the shakle bolts with safety wires. Once a Boeing worker, some habits die hard. Lol They are so over what is necessary but I felt it was nice to have the good-sized shackle. One additional thing I did after I tightened the shacklebolt with a wrench is that I safety wired the bolt to the shackles so it could not spin out and disconnect. My wife accuses me of over-engineering everything that I built and I'm very happy to say yes I do.:-)

If we could find all the road shackles that have fallen off of poser jeep and various other 4x4 bumpers we could probably retire 😆 safety wire, or some more primitive style of pin containment is 100% neccessary for towing or rigging, you can buy safety wire and safety wire pliers at harborfreight for $10-$20 total and teach yourself easily and cheaply a skill that is handy for countless uses 👍 (just don't assume you are now a certified A&P mechanic, or a racecar pit boss because you now own $15 of chinesium safety wiring equipment 🤣) if all the old farmers would've had such cheap, easy access to safety wiring equipment instead of bailing wire and fencing pliers they'd have colonized Mars by now and be growing crops! 😄

In farmer talk, your shackle is called a clevis. They are used to pull implements. You can get them very heavy!

Took the words outa my mouth! However, I also recommend you put some thread lock on it and then I also use some galvanized wire to safety wire the pin. Last thing I want is the pin loosening and backing out while under tow!

Technically you and guy in the video our both correct. The thing he referred to as a shackle is actually a shackle. It uses a clevis pin to fasten it. Yes, clevis pin is what farmers use on implements. My family are farmers, I also have a clevis hitch adapter for my adjustable drop-down hitch.

The clevis screw pin has a hole in it for stainless steel wire to secure the pin from loosening up. I use these on my boats mooring and anchors. SS wire a must to keep the pins from unscrewing under load. I realize tow chains are not under load but vibration will loosen them.

This is a great video as always. Thank you for getting this very important information out here. Getting into the details of this subject is not done near enough in the RV community. This is mentioned in other comments. But, it’s worth repeating. And repeating again. Always mouse your shackles. (Tie off the pin with safety wire. The hole in the pin is there for a very good reason.) Break ratings on shackles are based on straight line force. If the trailer pulls to one side, the break rating is halved. To quote Mike Rowe, “Safety third.” 😁 D.

True story: I had to explain to the guy at a rental truck company the reason for crossing chains under the tongue, after he ran them straight from each side of the tongue to the hook eyes on my truck. Some to the effect of, "Well that makes sense" was his reply.
@MikeBrown-ii3pt
@MikeBrown-ii3pt 2 года назад
I'm glad that I'm not the only one that knows to cross the chains on a trailer! I get into several "discussions" about it every year during racing season. One fellow racer learned the hard way after telling me to mind my business. Fortunately, no one was seriously injured when his trailer came uncoupled and caused him to roll everything. Unfortunately, his brand new dually, brand new enclosed trailer and his race car, along with most of his pit equipment were a total loss.

From your ever present utility kit in every truck, use pliers to clip an 8" length of stainless steel wire to secure the pin in the shackle/clevis. Unlike threadlocker, this is open to visual inspection for safety, and is re-usable, making the shackle available for other uses in a pinch. Solid core light gauge electrical wire will also work well without corroding.

Good informative video. thanks for posting. Keep in mind that the rating on the shackle or clevis is the pulling (towing) force from the crown of the shackle to the bolt not across the shackle from prong to prong. in other words the shackle should not be pointing to the ground but pointing to the tow then the hook should be attached.

I picked up a pair of stainless steel 316 quick links (1/2") from amazon (US Stainless). Cost about $30 with a WLL 5500# and BL 27500#. Put some Loctite and they are really easy to attach the tow chains to. Been very happy with them. I did this recently for my F150 as attaching to the hitch direct was difficult and did not leave much slack in the chain. I did not have this issue with my previous tow vehicle (Jeep Grand Cherokee).

Thanks for the tip on using a shackle. Seems like you should put something on the threads so the pin does not vibrate loose. Also, would you consider doing a clip on not twisting chains to shorten them. Twisting weakens the chains when stress it applied. I think many people don't know that. There are other ways to temporarily shorten a chain during towing, such as a bungee cord or cable tie. If the chain is brought into play during an emergency, the bungee or cable tie will simply break, leaving the chain to perform as designed. Thanks (from Idaho) for your always informative videos! Take care!

@Nic7320
@Nic7320 2 года назад
Two lessons I learned the hard way: Lesson 1: Crossing your chains under the hitch is a bad idea. Drop hitches quite often scrape the ground as you exit a gas station or cross a steep gutter, and if your hitch post comes down on your chain, it can break it. So now I keep my chains off to each side. Lesson 2: Shackle your tongue release with a bolt or carabiner. I was going down a very bumpy road (Balboa Blvd, north of L.A.) and somehow -- mine rattled open. Fortunately, the chains did their job and kept the trailer from rolling away. But your advice about checking safety chain weight ratings is very good. I need to double check EVERYTHING..

As a former stage hand, we used shackles a lot in rigging huge loads from roof trusses in theaters, convention centers and ballrooms. The problem with using anchor shackles in the application you described is that the rating of the shackle only applies to the forces applied in opposite directions on the center of the clevis and the center of the shackle body. It does not apply to forces exerted in opposite directions on the two legs of the body. In that instance the rating is reduced by 50%. Hence, shackles should always loaded on the center of the clevis (pin) and the body (or bell) of the shackle for maximum weight rating. In your example, their is no guarantee that the shackle will be properly loaded in the event of a hitch failure.
@westmountainadventures3606

I’m also a former stage hand. Thanks for bringing this up. In a catastrophic failure or incorrect connection with the primary hitch, the trailer could pull in any direction. D.
@Gwizbini

@@westmountainadventures3606 I am a former circus aerialist and circus rigger. As you mention the shackle is rated when properly oriented and not loaded side to side. The rating also is for a static or constant load. A dynamic load would occur if your trailer decoupled and would cause the weight of the load to multiple.

@rossevans1774 Год назад
@@westmountainadventures3606 You are correct, that's only one of reasons why the safe working load 'rating' of the Bow shackle is usually around 1/3 of the failure/ breaking load of the Bow shackle. Just make sure that shackle isn’t side-loaded. Their WLL is for pulling forces applied perpendicular to the pin. When used in a safety chain scenario there’s a chance, albeit slim, that the shackle could be side-loaded when tension is suddenly introduced.
@dahveed284
@dahveed284 2 года назад
Good points. Those shackles come in all different sizes and load ratings. Very useful to get the proper size. Additionally the hole in the shackle pin is for a safety wire to prevent the shackle from loosening (they never tighten it seems) from road vibrations. You can remove the hooks and just use the shackles to attach the chains to the bumper as well. Always check your load ratings and then the condition of the chains, hooks, shackles, whatever occasionally.

A G70 5/16 link or a G70 3/8 safety chain trailer attachment point/method would fail much sooner than that modification lol, (which is often the failure point anyway, with the exception of people using hardware store quick-links, that are often a guaranteed failure point 🤦‍♂️)

@timhammond691
@timhammond691 2 года назад
As has been said below, the rating on the shackle/clevis is for a straight pull and not through the side. The other question that comes to mind is the rating of the steel hook point on the hitch. It appears relatively light for what gets connected, potentially. I imagine it is rated to hold the potential tongue weight of the towed trailer and not the towed trailer itself.

I place my hook, facing the tow vehicle, forward and down so the hook point is essentially pointed downward. Should an event occur, the forces applied to the hook should land in the saddle of the hook and not have a tendency to point load the hook... Chain ratings... I did find this interesting. In the Hoisting & Rigging world we work on Working/Safe Working Load (WLL or SWL) to determine what hardware we will use. When one-upping my game for trailering I learned they use the Breaking Strength as a requirement for determining the size/capacity of the chain/shackles etc.. The interesting point is that trailer chains do basically use the WLL to determine the size of chain - it is just way easier to use the Breaking Strength -- here's why: depending on the connection type, the tongue weight can/should only be 10% to 25% (goosenecks) so therein lies your WLL... Break Strength divided by Tongue Weight.... sorry for the essay :- / Kev

This is a solution for a problem that doesn't exist. You information is very good though. I'm convinced that some people have no business touching anything mechanical.

A little added info on your topic. Some rigging is rated in "Tons" and some is rated in "Tonnes". 1 Ton is 2000 lbs and 1 Tonne is 2200 lbs (metric of some sort). Not a huge difference but its nice to know what you are working with. The manufacture will have their spec on their website. Also a "screw pin shackle" is rated pulling on the pin and the opposite side of the bow pulling within 30 degrees of the center line on each side. If you pull on but sides of the bow, you de-rate the shackle by 50%. Since you can NOT see the shackle going down the road it is a good idea to use one rated at double what need just to be on the safe side. The hammer links you mentioned are a great solution as they come in a million configurations. Also WWL on (quality, not Chinese junk) chains is 4x and soft straps is 5x. Meaning if the break strength is 10,000 then the rated WLL is 2500 for chain and 2000 for soft straps. These are called "Safety Factor or Factor" in the towing and crane industries.

Dynamic load and static load are quite different things. If you are in a situation where your chains are taking up a load, there is also going to be slack in the system. That 10k trailer is going to put a much higher shock load into those chains than 10k pounds. Most of the hardware that you see is rated to a static load, for use in a pre-tensioned system (think truckers securing a load with binders). While others have mentioned the shackle orientation already (the bell should be the part floating in the hitch so it pulls straight in an emergency), I would also recommend using hardware with a captured pin. A threaded pin has a habit of vibrating loose when there is no load on it. Even just mousing it with a zip tie is enough.

My Blue Ox WDH came with the quick links. I've never looked at them to see if there's a weight stamped on them.

You can also just loop the chain through the oval slot and reconnect it to itself on the outside.

@@WYO_Cowboy_Joe Hook doesn't need to go through the slot. Just the chain. Bring it through the bottom and connect it to the hook

Agreed, definitely use the 'rated' bow shackles. Better still use 2 safety chains crossed under the draw bar but ensure the articulation of the trailer and tow vehicle is not impeded. If the draw bar were to detach from the tow vehicle the crossed chains will catch the draw bar preventing it tripping/ biting in the ground. And those hooks are unnecessary, the less detachable hardwear items between the trailer and the tow vehicle the better.

After installing a new Gen Y mega duty 9” drop hitch on my new F350 Tremor the chains on my trailer were too short to connect to the draw bar. Ordered a set of 12K hammer locks. Hopefully they’ll provide a little extra reach and be plenty strong.

Those same folks that grind on their equipment tow over payload ratings of their vehicle. 60% of all RVer's are over one or more weight. Payload and GVWR of tow vehicle a most common. Do a video on that.

Hey im looking for another idea to hook up my trailer bit the thing is the holes on the receiver are flat and move with the car not up and down. Do you stull suggest a schackle?

How about instaling the chain hook from the side as opposed to from the front or thr back of the reciever,,?? Just a quick idea .. I have a 1999 F-150 no problems there.

Also note that by coming in from the back of the truck with the hook, you may be point loading the hook. The strength of the hook is at the center. The other important element is inspecting the shackles for wear at the contact points. All the loose movement from road travel is likely causing wear on the shackle.

Also shackles that are not the right size and are not completely seated "loaded sideways" concern me as well. I don't think they are rated to be pulled sideways.

One big issue here you forgot to tell people to safety wire the shackle that is what the hole in the pin it for. With all the bouncing and vibrating you will need it.

Good timing on this video I was about the to do the same thing to my Tremor and add shackles or clevises which ever term you prefer. The only issue I was concerned with is the screw in bolts backing out going down the highway. Any suggestions? as most of the bolts aren't long enough to add a keeper on the back side. I had someone suggest lock tite but i am not sure about that. Thank you again for another great video.

You can use loctite, you can also run wire through the hole in the pin and the shackle itself to keep it from being able to back out.

" add shackles or clevises which ever term you prefer." Sigh, I almost made it through without getting all pedantic about stuff but: The shackle is the U shaped part, the clevis pin is the sort of bolt shaped part. When you insert your hitch pin into your receiver and slide that thingme through the hole and slip on that clip to hold it you have also just installed a clevis pin. You can't shackle something unless you use a clevis pin (exception made for soft shackles).

The shackles are an option or you could just replace the hooks with bigger ones. I have a local chain supplier near me and I just went in and tried various hooks until I found ones that fit. Then I bought 8 and replaced all the hook on my 4 landscaping trailers. No big ugly shackles on my hitch.

I am more worried about the strength of the chain coming from my boat trailer, if it the original chain attach from dealer boat purchased, than went I hook it to my 2018 f250, I should not worried about the , right?

The factory hitch is actually pretty genius- it’s designed for the safety chain hook to be installed in the horizontal direction, hook facing toward the outside of the truck, then rotated to the back as you hook it. I hated the design at first but once I figured it out it makes a lot of sense…. Prevents the chain hook from bouncing out…. No need for shackles. Ford and GM are the same in that respect.

As en engineer work load limit is the load that a piece can take with out deforming permanently. So if your safety chains show any wear or that it not in the original shape you should replace it as the breaking load will have changed. If the plate on the hitch has moved, bent or worn you should replace it for same reason.

Hook loading recommendations need to be followed. The direction of the hook in the hole dramatically can stress the hook under load.

I suggest folks take a look at installing/using hammerlock couplers rather than clevis/shackles. The install can be a little tricky (you do have to hammer them together) but once installed, they aren't going to come off. Put them on a ford superduty where attaching the chains was driving me nuts and haven't looked back. And they are strong - a 1/2 inch 80 grade hammerlock has a working load limit (WLL) of 12000 lbs (at least the one I installed does).

Is a bigger hook connected to the chain an option? Trying to keep it quick, easy, safe, and quiet. Those shackles look like they will clank if left on all the time, and quick goes away if you remove and install them everytime.

The hole in the clevis pin is for safety wire. In order to trust that clevis, you should run a piece of safety wire thru the hole and around the clevis to insure the pin doesn't back out.
