Absolutely, it's why I'm passionate about teaching these skills. We must be able to debate ideas without attacking people and disagree with respect without dehumanising others.
Great question. I think we can be vehemently opposed to what someone stands for and the decisions they make without lowering ourselves to their standards of behaviour. As Michelle Obama said: "When they go low, we go high". We need to model the behaviour we want to see in others and lead by example. That doesn't mean going soft - not at all - but we can hold people accountable and call out poor behaviour in a strong and dignified way, even when respect is not what we get back.
