Thanks for featuring my comment about lav mics as an option for non-mic people, who would otherwise be using a far-away webcam. I am stunned by the revelation that you use a headset at work! Not that headsets can't sound good, but...for a guy who has a thousand mics, that's a shocker. I do use an SM7B (and an earbud) for work calls. Or I did until recently, as I am now experimenting with an overhead (but on-camera) AT875R short shotgun, for a bit more desktop clearance and elbow room. For me, using an over-the-top mic in a Teams meeting is bringing some fun to the job. Also I am often on-camera, and I enjoy being that guy who always has that insane looking microphone. Maybe for you, since using mics is almost a second job, wearing a simple headset is a welcome break. Thanks for all you do.
I listen with headphone, so I definitely prefer the studio mics. I don't care if mic is in the frame, whether it is podcaster or singer or youtuber. What is distracting is poor audio. Thanks and keep up the good work.
Interesting tips and information on the RU-vid technicalities behind deleting RU-vid videos. Though not deleted, all of your first one hundred podcasts got 'privated', many of which contained very useful information (the first fifteen got this treatment much earlier on, but that was due to irrelevancy). Some of my favourites and the ones I found containing especially useful information include "BSP-015: Multi Channel Networks and RU-vid Channel Growth", "BSP-018: How to Start a Podcast", "BSP-021: New Pebble Watches", "BSP-028: What Inspired Me to RU-vid", as well as the "Big Trouble in Little Microphone" video going into several Chinese brands selling the same rebranding microphones. Regardless, thank you for your very informative podcasts that are also often entertaining.
When it comes to lavs, working in the videography/media space we use them mainly whenever presenters move around and that's about it. If they don't want to move around we'll usually use a PGA SM58 as it's a great microphone and we rarely use mics like the quadcast/podmic unless if we are doing a voiceover.
Excellent reasons as to why the mic is in frame! I think there's a fourth reasons, too. They want to be seen as authentic/they don't want to conform to what's industry standard. Having the mic in frame or even holding the mic while talking makes you feel relatable and authentic. It's also fun. They're purposefully not doing what the industry standard is: hide the mic. It's a philosophical choice. The mic is in frame in my videos because I'm recording in an untreated room. Keeping it close to my mouth helps keep the quality up and reduces reverb as much as possible. Then I throw some de-reverb on the audio to get rid of 80% of it so it sounds cleeeean.
Haven’t checked your podcast in a while kinda randomly chose this one to tune back in and of course you’re using the mic I’m smitten over at the moment 😫
What surprises me most about the advice not to delete RU-vid videos is, I would have thought that RU-vid has an active interest in freeing up storage space. So, Todd B.'s advice should actually be frowned upon by RU-vid, and basically he should not comment on that 🤔 On the other hand, if storage IS a concern, then I commend Todd for being so user-oriented and focusing on the user's best interest, and thank RU-vid for looking out for us, as well ✊🏻👌🏻😊
Thank you for the podcast! I do love my lavs (em272 capsules in cheap Chinese housings) for the embient sound recordings! A pair of these are really cheap, but provide insane sensitivity! And I mean INSANE! I use zoom h1n with a pair of these and when im on 7-8 gain I can hear so much happening in the forest, while the self noise is very very low, practically unnoticeable! For the spoken word they do sound a bit weird indoors, but if you have a proper wind protection on them and turn the gain aaaaall the way down+ place them nicely near your mouth it sounds pretty bearable.(I do prefer my sm58 and sm48 for the matter tho)
Pretty standard primary key match on a database side me thinks. Pretty processor intensive way of making joins for categorization on the user side. No level of “imperfection” is acceptable since you can never cover all bases of what medium the end user is going to consume on. Always do our best and master the final audio before rendering the video. When you do it right you don’t have to worry! 😊 Is everyone skilled enough to do this on their own. Probably not. Can everyone learn the basics to make things work? Yeah… Unless youre live streaming… Room tone is your friend. Lav mics love getting a healthy dose of air on the eq and cuts in the boxy frequencies (300-700ish). The room tone is used to train the spectral denoising. One of the greatest. Discoveries ive made in a long time is sonnible smart gate. Holy crap! Shaved hours off editing time for just about any spoken word project (audio or video). So worth it!
why do people have a problem with seeing a microphone in frame. i might be in the minority but i see someone talking without a mic but some how they have the sound of a pod caster and i suddenly feel its weird cause i know they DONT sound like that without seeing a microphone in frame. personal issue - Im about to need to help 2-3 friends to set up a home studio for them to record spoken word, and im still unsure about being "professional" if its acceptable to have a good mic in frame, or i just must have them use a lav instead and hide the mic away.
I think one reason may be that it comes from a mentality of "cinematiciness" or "being seen as a high production value." You don't see the mics in tv shows and movies, so you gotta replicate that to be seen as high quality. They conform to what's popular and then see others who don't as low quality. People are keeping their mic in frame on purpose because they want to be unique/anti conformist.
@@yousefcreative in your opinion if its for spoken work poetry that the words of the person should expression and words should reach the person on the other side of the screen. would a typical microphone really be distracting? (trying to set up a lav - or even a boom mic would then need to be an alternative instead)
I've been considering the type of microphone you have on your head where it sticks out along your chin. I assume it's a type of lav mic, for use with a kitchen stream or where I build things on my desk so that me moving around won't affect how my microphone picks up my sound like a stationary microphone would, and it's stuck to my face, not on a shirt or anything, so there will most likely be less noise from that.
My problem. I am remastering live vintage concerts. I quickly moved to over 1k viewers and 15k watch hours. However, RU-vid would not monetize me due to "ReUse". Granted, they have no problem doing so for people that put a talking head in and "React", but remastering and actually enhancing Audio doesn't seem to qualify. Regardless, I ended up deleting a bunch of my content in order to have them reevaluate my channel for monetization...I even created some totally original content and/or put up videos from my past live performance days... Second review... SAME DARN THING... Denied for REUSE... Now I am in the 3 month waiting period for next review (June). Pretty much starting to give up as I cannot remove one of the reuse videos as it's responsible for probably 75% of my subs and watch hours. Any thoughts on how I should handle this? I didn't go through the appeal process (the second time) as I felt they didn't even bother watching my appeal video the first time. They literally denied it less than a few hours later. What I'd give for a person to talk to about it... but alas, it's the Internet and media companies don't believe in people customer service anymore. Thanks for any advice you can give. - Andrew
I ran into a similar issue on my watch channel. I think I identified what cased the rejection for me. I had a video uploaded and I noticed an error in the VO, so I updated the VO for 5-10 seconds and uploaded the corrected version while the incorrect version was private. I think that's what caused my channel to be listed as reused content. I was rejected 2 or 3 times due to reuse of content. Once I deleted that incorrect video I was approved. I didn't ever get any exact answers as to what was reused or not, so I can only speculate on what worked and why I was finally accepted.
Thank you so much Rainer! I really truly appreciate it so much! I hope you're having a fantastic week so far and that your upcoming weekend is relaxing.
That's genuinely good to know about deleting of videos. Gulp, I kid you not, I deleted close to 2/3 of my videos to redo them because they were too long, too boring, too unfocused or just incorrect factually. But good to know it's important and better to unlist rather than delete. I also have a very 'Mari Kondo' approach to things so I just like deleting them rofl.
I absolutely understand that. If the data is incorrect then I think that would be justifiable to delete. For the ones that you think are too long I'd just enlist those.
I’ve never clicked off a video due to location or type of microphone. If I can hear the message, I get comfy in the conspiracy corner* *this needs to be in frame again
So for the RU-vid video interest linking, isn't Google planning on deleting old inactive Google accounts? Wouldn't that also delete their associated RU-vid channels, and videos, thereby deleted the viewer interest links that are used by the algorithm for other video recommendations? Or do those interest links only work for that particular channel? It sounds like that link exists within the video interaction data and not anywhere else, so if Google deleted all the podcastage videos I have watched, but left the ones I have not, RU-vid would significantly diminish the weight of audio production/mic reviews in my interests globally, not just within the podcastage channel.
Well that's annoying. I hate keeping videos around cluttering things up but I wind up with videos I don't want around any more because they are kind of obsolete. Also a goofy choice on their side of things since the waste in storage must be incredible.
Enjoyed this podcast episode. I think a large diaphragm microphone in the video makes it look and sound more professional. As long as it`s not blocking the face.
I never really mind the mic in frame, only if the person constantly touches/moves the arm/mic I find it very distracting. On other hand, maybe I'm old, but still don't like all the headphones. It just looks so closed off. Certainly if there are more persons in same room all with headphones. I don't get why (almost) nobody uses IEM or earpods for sound. PS: sadly people can't really people mimic the good settings, so there are still a lot that have good gear but bad sound. But I'm grateful for you and others that gives information for people to improve their sound
I love seeing mics in frame. Especially for myself, my microphone(s) will be more attractive than I will ever be Edit: Also, audio is more important than video anyways
Not a jerk at all. I appreciate the differing opinions because it exposes me to new ideas and pushes me to be more thorough in my testing and explanations, so THANK YOU!
