"Ghithub first, RU-vid second", you're right, better to be a developer than an influencer.

Looking forward to your new content and best of luck with your fight against tyranny! I'm at 4.5 years of gamedev YT and the advice I give is to know what you want to get from your youtube channel before you start. Is it internet fame? Then you need to feed the algorithm (as you say - a performance or tutorial). However that's not the only reason... Is it to drive wishlists for your games? Then you need to be entertaining and have a fun game ready to show. Is it to get feedback? Then you need to be humble and honest, ask for help and admit ignorance. Is it to be part of the community? Then you need to be prepared to watch a lot of other people's devlogs! Is it to get a job? Then you need to be professional and unique enough to stand out. Perhaps only one video as a show reel is all you need. All of those could be the right answer, but the goal should drive the kind of content you make.

This is true for all software related channels. It's best to not treat RU-vid as a job but as a form of expression or to show off your projects. You don't need to play the content game to make good content.

Focusing on the projects first while making RU-vid videos as a byproduct is definitely the way to go. Your skills will improve faster and it shows in the videos. I've found my audience/viewership to also be more stable over the last 6 years than what is common with the more performative content. Educational content can also be part of that process since it's easy to make a good tutorial when you understand a topic very well. Good luck!

I understand. I perceive RU-vid in 2 ways: work and pleasure. I think pleasure is better, because working on RU-vid is not about pleasure, it's better to go to a regular job (for me). I like to perceive RU-vid as a random intermediary for creating a community, just a place where random game updates will be published
@aoof6742
@aoof6742 2 дня назад
I don't really know much about the topic and definitely have not been making any content for that matter, but I do feel like the reason I watch Sebastian Lague even though he posts once in a blue moon was because of the fact he made his videos based on his interests primarily, and the cool little animation demos to help explain his code. Don't give up though! Have more fun with it!!

good video! correct with the 2 types of video, i think theres a 3rd type of RU-vid gamedev content. the Dev Log, diary kind of content which you talk about the stage the game is in, what worked, what didnt, what are the next goals etc
@ITR
@ITR 2 дня назад
Another thing to note, educational content is a lot more difficult to make have mass appeal than performative content, so you're more likely to reach mostly other game developers with it.

youtube just recomended me this video and I'm agree, I wanted to do the a kind of "perfomantive" content but instead of the "I DID [existing game] BUT WITH RTX AND IN 24] type I want to do like "HOW I FIX THIS BUGS IN MY GAME", but the thing is that I don't want to have to do 2 works 😩... even that I'll give a try until I get tired of record my screen with gaps of 30 minutes doing nothing (?).

I'm gonna be honest. I was watching your every video a long time ago. then youtube stopped suggesting your videos even if I do check your channel time to time. its about consistency of uploads I guess. algorithm doesn't like 2 week no upload then stops suggesting. (also viewer retention)

Oh cool! This is the first video I watch on this channel, which feels a little wrong. "big changes coming!" BUT I JUST GOT HERE! Anyway, I have been trying to get into the game industry for a while now as well. I got a failed kickstarter under my belt now, and a few projects I can start sending pitch decks to publishers. And one thing I did consider was youtube. I was on the fence about it, but you have discouraged me from taking the plunge. Ultimately I want to make games, not game adjacent content. So far, the furthest I've been in this entertainer direction is just writing a blog on patreon. All in all, I'm glad I found your channel, and it seems I found it at the right time. I really don't care for the "making my dream game in a week" kind of content, but I do love some passionate sharing of knowledge and projects. Take care! Fuck Russia.

Too bad a lot of big GameDev RU-vidrs sell the dream of RU-vid GameDev because it worked for them. Not everyone is good at it or want to be a youtuber... i never did youtube because i didn't like to make content, i like developing games. I work in the industry right now and i'm not a famous youtuber! Of course i can't just make my dream game and everyone will know about it, but being relevant on youtube is actually more difficult than make a good game that sell itself. At least for me, because i don't want to make youtube! So if you don't feel the youtube thing, don't do it. There are many roads to take for gamedev journey, take the best one for you. Nice Video!

Totally agree ! It's been close to 3 years doing gamedev youtube for me and I realized that there was a direct contradiction between what I need to do to make good youtube and what I need to do to make a good game, forcing me to do stuff just for youtube, taking away time from the important part of making a good game (or at least trying to). Like you said, it feels like 2 jobs. I almost stopped, but I'll do quick short devlogs every X months just to keep it alive and have more than 0 eyes on my game. But while we all wish gamedev youtube was marketing, it's really entertainment, the great majority will never care to buy the game in the end, they are here to watch. Good luck in your gamedev learning journey, I hope you can manage to find a job in the end.

for me at least, gamedev youtube is a means to motivate myself. If I have an audience that expects to see the next devlog, then I'm pressured to work on it. Furthermore, the positive comments and constructive criticism I recieve also help motivate and improve myself. In my experience, gamedev youtube has only been a positive.
