Channeling in espresso refers to the uneven distribution of water through the coffee puck, leading to inconsistent extraction and a weaker, less flavorful shot. Here are a few tips to help you prevent it:
1. Use a quality coffee grinder: Grind size and consistency can greatly affect the evenness of extraction, so make sure you're using a good-quality burr grinder and adjust the grind size to achieve an even extraction.
2. Tamp evenly: Make sure you're applying equal pressure to the entire puck when tamping. Avoid uneven pressure or twisting motions that could create channels.
3. Pre-infuse: Before you start the full extraction, use a pre-infusion or "bloom" stage where you add a small amount of water to the coffee to help it swell and ensure even saturation and extraction.
4. Distribution tool: Use a distribution tool to evenly distribute the coffee grounds in the portafilter before tamping. This can help prevent channels from forming.
5. Consistent shot timing: Make sure you're consistent with the length of time you extract the shot. Changes in timing can lead to uneven extraction and potentially form channels.
By following these tips and experimenting with grind size, tamping, and timing, you should be able to minimize channeling and enjoy a more consistent and flavorful shot.

There's nothing wrong with the bottomless porta filters, it's just they're pretty good at highlighting flaws in puck prep. Either you need to grind more finely, increase the dose or tamp just a little harder. I have a very similar Delonghi machine to yours with a Neouza 51mm bottomless porta filter and dosing at 19 grams which is pulling great consistent espressos. Hope this helps 👍

@@msdixie1972Not necessarily, My baskets don't have holes all the way to the sides and I don't have the squirts 😊. It's purely the puck prep. Although it does help if your machine isn't pushing 12-15bar pressure. 174-217psi is a lot of pressure compared to 101.5-130.5

I found it to be the opposite actually, I have had to make my grind more coarse to stop the spitting everywhere. Different beans equal different results and it takes time to dial in different batches of coffee beans you put in your machine. If you have one of these coffee machines you basically have a chemistry set.
@TylerMedlin98
@TylerMedlin98 9 месяцев назад
Bottomless portafilters are actually good for dialing in coffee and monitoring channeling in the shot. The espresso spraying everywhere is just an indicator that there is something that can be improved whether it’s adjusting grind size or tamping more intentionally. You could also toy with the dosage, I usually do 18g of beans

@mr.rainbowlovescoffee
@mr.rainbowlovescoffee 3 месяца назад
The coffee is burnt, and unfortunately, it cannot be salvaged. In such cases, it is advisable to discard the burnt coffee and prepare a fresh batch. Additionally, it would be beneficial to research and identify a reputable brand that consistently delivers a satisfying coffee experience. If, despite these measures, the coffee continues to taste unpleasant, it is best to refrain from consuming it.

My puck prep was good my tamping was good my grind size was at the finest, so fine that it was coming out the bottom and I was using a medium dark roast so I went with a different roaster and got dark roast and it fixed my problem, try different beans, something that’s going to produce more creamier and not so thin like a med or med dark roast in my case.. When it comes to different roasts. Medium to light roast should have a higher temperature. You can search the videos to see how you can change the temperature on your machine. Also your inverter can be changed to a different level for example yours is now probably five you can go down to four or three. That way you can have different grind sizes. Hoon's Coffee channel. He got me started figuring things out. So let me just give you a brief description. When grinding your coffee make sure it's coarse enough to make it 25 to 30 seconds. If you cannot reach that by going all the way down to number one. There is the iner part of the grinder. You take it out and you'll see the numbers on that little device on top Burr . You take off the metal handle by pushing on both sides outwards. And then you will be able to adjust the number of the Burr. It's most likely set on number five go to four or three and you're good to go. Then try to do the grind size the way you think it will be better for you. I hope this helps you good luck and let me know. And don't worry you can come back and ask me more questions if you need it. Good luck and May the force be with you

Grind finer, use the full 18 grams. Use the palm distribution tool and palm tamper (they come as one). Also the inner burr you can calibrate from 6 to say 4 and what this will do is the outer setting dial will now change i.e if on inner bur 6 your outer grind was 2 now on inner bur 4 it will make the outer dial setting 7 or 8. Ive had my machine for 5 years now (same as yours) my inner setting is on 2 and for my current coffee beans 🫘 I have it set to 9 and which yields a perfect 18 grams of coffee in and 36 grams of liquid out with zero channeling with bottomless portafilter. On this particular machine I use the manual shot pulling technique, basically you keep hold of the button (single or double shot, which one ever you calibrated for your needs) and you keep holding it for 5 seconds and then release. What this will do is pre infuse the coffee puck and when you let go of the button the pressure will pop up on the bar meter and start the extraction process. Now with 18 grams in and 36 grams out it takes me 28 to 30 seconds and thats with 5 seconds of pre infusion (I hold the single or double button for 5 seconds then release) so 5 seconds for pre infusion and 23 to 25 seconds to reach the 36 grams mark. To measure I just put a micro scale under the shot glass whilst pulling my shot. I buy my beans fresh and wait roughly 5-7 days before commencing to use them. For my milk I use oat milk but make sure its the MoMA Barista one the other brands or types taste like 🤮 Optional but worth it is the thick puck screens which sit on top of your puck. What this does is makes the inconsistencies of the shower screen gone and makes for an even extraction and stops channeling. Bonus is it keeps the shower screen clean! I have noticed deeper flavours since using this. Distribution tools are also a good way to get more flavours by making sure it’s mixed properly and even out the extraction process. Its been a journey and I have mastered the entry level machine 😊 My new goal is to pull shots super fast with my new future machine which I have not decided yet. A dual boiler will probably be a must to pull faster shots. Im aiming to be more productive in my shot pulling technique and not spending all day on a single shot 😂 Unfortunately on the sage barista express it’s not as fast but Im still content after 5 years of solid near everyday usage which has saved me a net total of £9,000 for me and my wife. This includes the cost of beans taken away but not the energy used to run the machine and water / oat milk. Id still say net profit will be around the 7k mark easily as me and the wife would buy a medium cappuccino once or twice daily! Have fun folks ☕️🫶

How to dial in espresso shot. 1) use between 18 to 19 grams of coffee. On the Breville Barista Express original PORTAFILTER. Use 17-18 grams of coffee 2) try to keep it between 25 and 30 seconds. 3) if it comes out too fast, grind a little finer. It comes out too slow, grind a little courser. 4) make sure the water temperature is hot enough. 5) try manual shots. Hold the double shot button for 3 to 5 seconds and then let go use a WDT Tool, a leveler, a good temper. Invest in a good bottomless PORTAFILTER.

You keep the same as you keep the same grain size. And grind a little closer than you usually do. That should open up so you can let it flow
@mr.rainbowlovescoffee
@mr.rainbowlovescoffee 7 месяцев назад
The coffee is choking. So when you grind courser it will open up the coffee bed. So if your number two for example, go to grind size number four or five. That's open it up.

Keep the grain size the same first of all 18 g should be the right size. Find how fast or slow The grind setting you have on your grinder. if it's coming out too fast do it more fine this coming out too slow do it more course. Always weigh your coffee. Next make sure you time the coffee coming out should be 25 to 30 seconds. Use a WDT tool it takes the clumps out of the coffee. And just keep checking each time. I hope this helps you.

Every shot you pour will give you experience, I was the same you pour and you learn. I'd say its non uniform grind, too course or too fine. Or poor puck prep. You will get the hang of it. And channeling will be a thing of the past. But it's good to see sometimes because it shows you something isn't quite right.

I have i question I hope someone can help me I have a 51 mm porter filter how many grams of coffee I should put in there I heard so many people saying different things I did 14 grams and it was good then I heard a double shot should start from 18 grams I did 16 grams and it took 1 min to pull a shot and no crema can someone help me?
@mr.rainbowlovescoffee
@mr.rainbowlovescoffee 10 месяцев назад
Very good question. First of all if you want to make your shot 30 seconds. If it's taking a minute make it coarser. That will loosen it up a little bit when you grind the coffee. Keep the weight at 18 g. When pulling a shot you want it two to one ratio . Example 18 * 2 is 36. Doesn't have to be exactly 36 but very close. If it's slow grind coarser it's too fast and grind finer. That's my suggestion for you.
@mr.rainbowlovescoffee
@mr.rainbowlovescoffee 10 месяцев назад
Okay actually I need to tell you one more thing. Doesn't matter if it's 14 g 16 g or whatever you put in it. Try to keep your pull of coffee for 25-30 seconds. If 14 g works for you and it taste good then leave it at that. At The end of the day it's all about the taste. Write down your recipes Make sure your coffee is fresh. Keep practicing. Keep learning. You will learn how to make the perfect cup of coffee for your taste. It took me 3 months to figure it out. I am not a professional barista. But I learned from the best if you keep watching all the videos on RU-vid. Take their advices figure out what you like. But at the end of the day it's all about the taste of coffee. Can't go wrong by learning the most as possible. So keep going and make everyday a masterpiece. Good luck in your journey. And at any time you want to ask me any more questions please feel free
