So many countries enter nowadays with songs including English lyrics! The ESC was so much better when countries entered a song in national languages! The song was king but helped mightily by the singer and the orchestration. Now it is just strobe lighting, dodgy fashion, and wind machines!
@justanotherrainbow
@justanotherrainbow Год назад
"large portion" is an exaggeration! Eurovision rules back then allowed for the inclusion of a specific percentage of English lyrics in a song, I can't remember which... The authors followed the rules, otherwise they would not have been allowed to sing that much in English. The Israeli also used English in their song that same year.

@jelenad6367
@jelenad6367 4 года назад
@@blockvoting You are right but the intention and reason for that is this reason that I said. Let me try to explain. I will quote the lyrics : Thousands of far a way dreams A rose in a heart of those who fell asleep (can be interpreted as those who already died in the war) Thousands of butterflies in many colours Just like souls of the innocent ones 18 years there is in my Ivan (it is said in a way, that either his mother, either his girlfriend is saying this) Pray for him, you, the Song of Angels (obviously because he goes to war, so she wants he doesn't die) Don't ever cry, don't every cry Never say Goodbye, never say Goodbye (~now this part needs explenation, as I believe this was a bit non obvious translation trap/not exactly mistake but still, maybe a bit misleading for foreign listeners. So, in croatian language everyday greeting for "bye" is "doviđenja!", which can literally be translated as "until we see each other again!". However, there is another greeting, which from some reason some translators lock exclusively with English "goodbye", although I think English "goodbye" is far, far more relaxed greeting. That croatian greeting is "zbogom", which literally can be translated as "may you go with God" and is almost never used in everyday life. Apart from poetry, it is used (or better, used to be used, today almost no one wants to use it, for it's obvious sad tone), for parting with someone. When someone would go for example, on a long distance journey, would move abroad far away and you weren't sure if you would ever see him again, you would say zbogom. Same with people going to war. When I imagine someone using "zbogom!", I see 19th century movie and people parting on a train station, waving off with a handkerchief not knowing after how many years, they will see each other again, if ever.) So, the song says "don't ever cry" - don't be hopeless, "never say goodbye" - don't even think you will not see him / them again, believe they will return, and soon! Smth like, say "doviđenja", not "zbogom". I actually forgot the original video so I went to check it, thanks for recommending. Well, as a native public viewer, I noticed something else. That pattern behind the singer who stands on the gallery, and on pillars around the doors they go through, are variations of motifs of early croatian art, which was of course spinning around religion. Since it's so early-dated, and it appears on some of most important monuments that are considered historical record of croatian nation / kingdom / language / culture, - it is often used in patriotic symbols. You can check here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Croatian_interlace en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ba%C5%A1ka_tablet I think symbology here alludes on the fact that Croatian nation, just as well as Europe, shall be reminded that it has old tradition and known history of existence, whatever it's then-enemy was pushing as propaganda to the world. At that time Serbian government was portraying Croatia as the "starter of the war" because it sought independence, only later the world realised what was happening. Namely, Serbian leader of that time decided he wanted serbian centralized, political domination over whole former federation, which hurt the self respect of other federal republics and nations, who then decided, one by one, to leave federation to avoid that from happening, since he wasn't willing to negotiate. Then he sent military attacks to try to prevent independencies, even after these countries became internationally recognized. So the general message of the video is smth like that, people must stay strong in spirit, despite the circumstances, and foreigners shall not fall for lies. Since the false propaganda was still pretty strong in the world, they decided to send this song as the first ever croatian entry, to try to rectify that bad image, explain that Croatia was a victim and did neither want nor was enjoying the war, and to give pride and hope to domestic public.
@jelenad6367
@jelenad6367 4 года назад
2) In the video there are also images of them standing on a mountain, as the shot widens, we see the sea below them in distance, which I immediately identify as Velebit mountain, another thing that over centuries, became very strong patriotic symbol. The often quoted is the patriotic song "Fairy of Velebit" and the fact that the mountain is over its lentgh, connecting mainland part of the country, with the seaside, and some of the parts across it's length are historic regions of the country, which were particles in medieval times, so the mountain can be seen as something that represents the unity of all croats. Unity was important feeling in those times, so the association is obvious. Other places in the video I don't quite recognize, but maybe they have symbolical meaning for appearing as well. I do get the "end of winter", naked tree, and "beginning of spring", trees in full bloom, association. Another idea I deduct from seaside being in the video, is reminder on a popular tender-nickname, lovely-nickname that country has within itself, which is used in certain occasions, - "the beautiful one" - "lijepa naša". It alludes on pride towards the beauty of the "beautiful homeland's" nature, especially the seaside. We have to understand that video was first of all created for the domestic viewers, while it had to stay clean and good looking, for its other, representative purposes abroad. So yes, there are some religious things, but they serve a wider motif. Afterall, traditionally the meaning of a given nationality locks together with their own religion in this part of Europe, and each nation very tightly locks patriotism or, sadly, even nationalisms, with more or less subtle religious imagery/associstions on their own religion. Its not really case in lyrics itself of this song, like I said, it is definitely, a rather hopeful, gentle, but determined, strong spirited, mother/sister /girlfriend, praying for ending of the war and soon coming peace. I hope it's clearer now. Btw, that same year, Bosnia and Herzegovina also sent the anti war / sad fate song, called "All pain of the world", whose lyrics are going "I can't get a star for you, cannot reach the universe, but at least I am sending this song, so that you know I'm still alive, my love. When tonight my tears get frozen, I will not let fear take me away. I can win this alone, but it would be easier if you were here. Chorus: All pain of the world, is tonight in Bosnia, I am staying here, though, to be spiteful towards the pain." So basically, almost same general idea, but from perspective of a man, while croatian is from perspective of a woman. Even though people liked Don't ever cry's music and melody, neither of the songs was really that well received due to somewhat still-present political bias or underinformed/wrongfully informed state of masses in Europe at that moment. And that rectifying was exact reason why they were both sent, to raise awareness. Meanwhile, I read here that nowadays some hear a Christmas carol in Don't ever cry. 🙈 (I mean, cute, but very wrong.) I also hope you didn't mind this lengthy explanation. Just thought to clarify a bit, and also hope I didn't spoil the way you like it. It indeed is one of most quality songs sent so far, especially regarding melody.

This song is beautiful, but "my Croation sky" spoiled it all....It's completely ridiculous having added this....I don't care if it was post-war time or not. Politics should be forbidden in contests like this. There are nice people in Serbia ànd in Croatia (I have been there many times) and also evil people like everywhere........and also in the other smaller states of ex-yugolsavia. They should rewrite it and sing it again. The sky doesn't stop being beautiful at the Croation border....The planet belongs to everybody with respect. Nevertheless, apart from that, the song is very beautiful.

@@ya4ovek Not at all, but the timing (war in Yugoslavia in beginning of the nineties) of this song generated the association. Time epoque was too sensitive to add something like that at the end of a song.....I even wonder if this sentence has a link with the whole content of the song..... I am sure I am not the only one that feels the same. One can read between the lines.....and that was their purpose. Even when they did not say anything bad about Slovenians or other people. If is was Belgium, my country would add something like that: "My Belgian sky" or "my Luxumburgian sky" everybody would die of laughing at the very moment and would find it completely ridiculous.... So I keep my point of view........What do other 28 countries care about the Croatian Sky ?

@@stevendegieter5034 Okay, I got you point. I understand that this speciphic phrase in that time has heavy meaning. But, still, it does not say other countries are bad. It's just being patriotic in a hard time for your country. Not political at all. "What do other 28 countries care about Croatian sky" They do not necessary care about Croatian sky, but they can appriciate music and patriotic message. You can feel music without being Croatian. This year my country sent song "Russian woman". What other 40 countries care about Russian woman? Same, do not necessary care about them, but still feel the music and message without being Russian woman.

@Steven De Gieter , of course your people would laugh at added lyric "my Belgian sky" because it does not fit nor time nor context. Year before this entry Croatia was just recognized as a country as new established entity in this world, and even during this performance back in 1993 the war was still going on. This entry didn't aim the win, but rather sent a simple song that served two purposes: raise a moral for those who were still defending the country & send a message for peace and message to Europe to prevent further war, and last thing on mind of these singers as well as people in shelter was to win Eurovision back then. It is always neccesary to observe the context of song, its age and circumstances that was sent. Cheers

"Don't ever cry my Croatian sky" is the best part of the song. This song was sung IN THE MIDDLE of the defensive war while the civilians suffered heavy shelling/bombardment, not after it. Croatian sky was invaded at the time, Steven. The friends and family of the performers were in danger or outright dying while they sung this. " They should rewrite it and sing it again". Sure, whatever you say.
