What you recommend for a Mazda6 2015 Diesel? I've just had my MOT done at 105, 199 miles.... the Forte oil engine flush was mentioned as I've got my service coming up in a month or so and saw your video after looking to research this product...
Hello BMW Doctor👋 Thank you for your expertise on BMW’s. I did have oil consumption on my 2007 525i with 140,000 miles. I took your advice and got the Forte product you talked about and ‘MAGIC HAPPENED’!!! No more burning oil, no more thick exhaust smoke and power/performance has definitely improved. Will make the change to 5w40. Thanks again for helping us maintain our ULTIMATE DRIVING MACHINE!!!
Hi Joy, I changed oil from 5w-30 to 5w-40 and now is burning oil and i can see white smoke... What exaclty did you used from Forte products? THANK YOU 💪
You are right. I first used the Castrol Edge 5w30 and switched to the Liqui Moly 5w40. Much better engine performance, quiet, and does not consume oil. I had a lot of problems with the Castrol Edge 5w30. BMW E60 m54b22
Religiously use Liqui Moly 5W-40, use leichleuf or high tech, make sure any oil you use is LL01 certified (see back of bottle). The grade alone is insufficient to make your choice.
Good evening, Just been watching this video. We have a 1.6 ED, 1 series. Now with 100,000 miles. Serviced by BMW main agent. Our oil has been changed from Shell 5w30 to 0w30 I would be interested in you opinion on this change and your own suggestion.
I can confirm this, recently switched from 5w40 to 5w30, and it needs suddenly topping up between oil changes. Also with wear spacing between metal surfaces increases, an oil which keeps it viscosity better at high temperatures will be better.
would you recommend the same oil (Shell 5w 40) for a N47 engine? Last time i did an oil change on my 120D E82 (88k on the clock) i used Shell 5W 30? :)
BMWs are great cars if you spend the money and take care of them im gonna change from 5w30 to 5w40 next service with a flush my engine is high mileage diesel with no DPF or EGR i like to use ELF oil i was using triple QX and car lube but theyre cheap but i change the oil every 5k kms going to stick with ELF now for the longrun
I converted to 5W40 AMSOil european formula about 3 weeks after I got the car and it had 118K miles. How much does the brand really affect the motor? Currently car has 220K miles. 08' E90 N54
Thanks to your videos BMW Doctor I am learning a lot from them as I am now starting to DIY my 2008 BMW x5 3.0si. Part of that was looking for the exact same oil specs and certifications as BMW's 5W30 oil. I live here in Vancouver, Canada and I am unable to see any oil with the same oil with the ACEA, A3/B4, API SL, BMW LL-01 other than Castrol Edge SAE 0W30 Euro and the Pennzoil Platinum Euro SAE 5W/40. Then I saw this video which actually makes sense... and then I still wanted to make sure and that's when I checked my x5 owner's manual and to my surprise... it says "Approved oils belong to the SAE classifications 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 and 5W-30". The online version of my user's manual only mentions the 5w-40 and the 5W-30 but on the manual I have, it says 4 different approved grades. I guess it's still best to check our owner's user manual to make sure... I am just surprised that the BMW dealership here was not even aware of this until I showed them my owner's manual. Now, I am changing my own oil tomorrow or this coming weekend and now, I don't have to worry about the high priced 1L bottle of oil from BMW. Happy learning everyone.
The other variable with this is using a cheaper fully synthetic 5w-40 oil such as Mannol and changing every 5-6,000 miles anyway. Much prefer this approach to some lease car pitched marketing gimmick tosh about oils lasting 15-20,000 miles and it looking like an oil tanker spill site when examining. That’s reportedly most of the problems with the timing chain engines that let go.
I usually change my oil in n52, but last time a mechanic did it - and he put in 0w30. It burns out like candle wax, and after 4 months and a valve cover change I had to fill it up with a whole liter of oil. Does it negatively impact engine longevity? I was wondering whether it is actually better for the engine during winter (around -5*C to 5*C) or should I go back to 5w40? I live in EU, it's hot only during the 2 months of summer ;)
I have unsubscribed you long ago, BUT here I 100% agree with you. And never drive recomended 12 or 24month service. My oil get changed by seasons or as soon as i hear my engine gets noisier - 3 to 5k miles.
It’s GONE and nowhere to be found. I have an 04 530i e60. I recently had an issue come up with power to my seats, DSC, seat heaters, As well as steering column adjustment. I checked ALL fuses, the battery & connection, also the Micro power module under the spare and don’t see shit wrong. Please point me in the direction of the correct video to watch. I need to figure this out. Thanks, love ur content!
I've always used 5w/30 on my E90 2008 2.0 litre petrol (I think this is a N43 engine) since purchased at 33k miles, now has 120k miles. Does your advice still apply, and should I switch to 5w/40? Many thanks.
I have a 320i rough idle lacks power and smoke if left idling I’ve changed oil separator coils plugs you name I’ve spent it now it’s just had full service still doing the same is there any solution or solutions I can use please ??? Great video as always great content
Liqui Moly is fantastic, expensive, only oil that lasts past 5000km with no oil burn and quality did not degrade. But use the correct specification: LL-01 for regions outside Europe. I immediately experienced valve cover leaks using Liqui Moly 5w40 LL-04 in Canada. What's the difference between LL-01 and LL-04, or even LL-98? Only some manufacturers, the premium ones like Castrol, Motul, etc, bear those certifications. N52 definitely only likes drinking the good stuff.
Hi Dean, sorry I’m a novice I have 2010 e90 318i 2L petrol with 73.5k and I don’t know what the engine type is. I hear you talking about your engine with turbo and I’m guessing it might be a diesel. I respect your vast knowledge on Bmw, is that the best oil for my car too please. Thanks
I have a 320d 2007 with the M47 engine which is turbocharged would you Recommend 5w30 or 5w40 as you covered it will not heat up fast enough using 5w40 Bjt I have blue smoke out the rear aswell
Absolutely agree. As an engine ages the 'gaps' between components, especially big bends and mains, get larger and thinner oil will not fill the gap completely. Also worn rings/ valve guides with thinner oil will cause more oil burn.
Wow, this explains why i am always having to top up my oil in my car, after having it for 4 years. I have just had a service, using 5w 30. Can i start to top up using 5w40? I dont want to change the oil now only just having a service a few months back.
Shouldn't be an issue up to 100,000 miles. Beyond that, its sensible to use a higher upper viscosity oil. However, for the engines described, it MUST be fully synthetic.
I have the same engine on my E90. I have now 166000 km (100000 miles). I am using Castrol Edge Profesional 5w-30. I am often do short distance traveling with my car...only because of that i am using 5w-30. I don't have any problem with oil consumption. Do you reccomendation to change on 5w-40?
What oil is good for my engine N57D30 with 110000 miles on clock? On this moment no problem with lose the oil but smal knocking on cold start for 1 min. Car E71 2013. Thanks
You have M5 stick with manafacturer oil which is reccomended and change oil every 4K miles. No need to change on that engine anyone who says otherwise is a idiot oil has nothing to do with the rod bearings NEGLECT is why the rod bearings go out
Mine N52B25 was eating 5w30 2.5 liter until next oil change. I put into 5w40 just for test. Now 1.5L max consumption for 10k. More you rev more oil is burned. So this is not a news for me :)
Hey brother it’s Dave. I just have some questions. I’m still looking at 335i and 328i To buy. I found a really nice 2011 335I e93 with n55 Single turbo engine. I really like. It’s a one owner car. it’s always been serviced at BMW. he has all the service records and the car is spotless. It Has the M sports package. premium package. convenience package. cold weather package. The only thing Is it has 108,000 miles on it. Everyone is telling me to stay away from a BMW turbo charged car with over 100,000 miles on it. Is it really going to make that much difference if I buy a car with 80,000 miles on it. Or 70,000 miles on it. it’s 10 years old. That’s how it’s going to be buying a 10-year-old car. I know you can’t diagnose a car without seeing it but this car looks like it just came off the showroom floor. And it’s $13,000. It was $64,000 when he bought it new. Do you think I should stay away from it also. Thanks Dr. Dean 🏎
Ok mate. What about N53. I got 330i. Last time I changed oil I have used Forte as well as per your advise. Since then I havent notice ANY oil consumption so that was great advise! But anyway - using 5w30 mileage is 108k
My N53 uses a litre every 1200 miles. I got it at 78k, it now has 96k. Oil consumption has remained identical, and it pulls like a train. Will have to try the Forte stuff.
2003 e39 530i about 120k miles on the clock I recently changed from 5w30 to 10w40. With 5w30 had to add every 1k miles almost a quart. Wonder if whatever I did is safe for the engine so far drove about 500 miles amd seems to be ok and my oil level is the same. Thanks Buddy
Thanks for the info Doctor, I’ve watched the whole video and want to make the switch to 5-w40. I just want to confirm if this will be okay for the cold Canadian winter’s here where it can get to -35 C/-31 F.
Note: This has no change in effect of cold starts (the '5W' part) the difference will appear most noticeable when the engine is up to operating temperature.
Hey BMW doctor, what about for an n52 that does mostly city traffic driving? I recently moved and my n52 is used in 90% city driving, not much highway driving. Wondering if i should stay with 5w30 or move to 5w40. I use liqui moly. My n52 has 125-126k miles
Whats your take on longlife 01 vs longlife 04? I dont hear you talking about that. The longlife 01 from castrol is really difficult to find nowadays. I drive a x5 e53 4.8is.
Quick question, which i feel like you could answer easily. Recently I've been experiencing the infamous tick, and I thought about your video. Do you think 5W-40 would still be better or maybe a 0W-40?
Their is a fix for this. Something like holding 3500rpm in 2nd gear for 30 seconds... some shit like that... its due to loss of oil pressure to the back of the motor. I think I remembered that correctly... Google it or RU-vid, u will see what I'm talking about.
I think I heard you say that this video is NOT applicable to turbo engines. What do you recommend for a 2007 BMW 335xi (N54 engine with twin turbos) with 131,000 miles on it? Thanks.
what about a 2jzge in a 2003 is300 with 250k? I'm still using 5w30 and have tracked it 8 times in the last 2 years... should I throw in 5w40 now? will 0w40 be okay?
Hi Dean, have a problem way the wifes 2012 BMW X1 MSport diesel. Recently the car seems its missing or feeling like its trying to grip the road in every gear. Need help plz, had to a few mechanics an they don't know wats wrong
Hey mate, i just switched to 5w40 and engine seems to still burn oil. I have a 2009 bmw 120i e88. It was topped up last week by my mechanic and when i checked today, gauge says halfway and need to top it up with maybe half a liter.
I used to use 5w30 on my bmw e92 330d it's got 117000 miles. I had alot of noises from engine ect ect. My exhaust started to blow blueish smoke I've used the same oil Dean is talking about same make aswell 3 days in my engine noise has reduced by 60% and blue smoke is gone.
Hi mate I have a BMW 740i ActivHybrid 2013 N55. The mileage on the car is 24k I tend to use Castrol Edge 5W 30 Do you think this is ok? Or should i move to 5W40? Also is Shell Helix better than Castrol Edge? Thanks and great channel im learning everyday
@@BMWDoctor ah, just watched it again and i found the answer, 5w 30 is needed for cars with a turbo charger. Thank you. Im not a mechanic or have any experience with cars so forgive the silly questions. Came across your channel a few days ago and its amazing.
I will be trying Pennzoil ultra platinum 5w40 euro full synthetic which is derived from natural gas instead of crude and supposed to be more stable, curious to see if I use less oil between oil changes.
Can anybody (but preferably BMW Doctor) weigh in on the difference between an n47 and an n47t. A Google search has folk saying they think the n47t is a technical update but nobody seems to know exactly what was updated. If it is a technical update does it solve the n47 timing chain issue once and for all? Curious as I drive a 2012 f10 n47t and want to know the difference.
I watched ur whole vid and you said “cars with turbos should use 5w30 even with high mileage right ? I have a 07 325d 3.0L with about 140k I’m using 5w30 or switch to 5w40 ?
Why do you object to 0W-40? The zero would only be for cold starts and should therefore be less viscous than 5w oil. The 40 weight will apply pretty much as soon as the car comes to temp. I am all in on switching to 40 weight on used engines. I might agree even for new engines but I have no experience. I bet the 30 weight was recommended for gas mileage purposes rather than engine protection. But I am a cynic.
please go and rewatch my whole video instead of watching it partially maybe you would have got your explanation As its stated in the video. Im not going to tell you anything as everything is in the video I ain't here to make it easy for your answers. Watch the video and you will get your answers watching 2 mins isn't enough
@@BMWDoctor I watch the hole video so is it @afe to say yes for me to use 5w40 and do it matter if I use Castro or Mobil 1? Please and thank for your help.
