The Federal Reserve is trying to cool off the economy to bring down inflation; however, our fiscal authorities (i.e., the US government) are not cooperating.
This video gives us a review of 23 years of data. It shows how our fiscal authorities have pretty much written off fiscal discipline.
This video is made for 1st year college students or AP/IB Economics students. It focuses on foundational economic concepts.

Why is this happening? Who does this policy benefit? What are the long term consequences?

It benefits those that are currently in office. There is a macroeconomic hypothesis called the political business cycle. This says incumbents will manipulate the macroeconomy to increase their chance of being reelected. Sadly, this short-term incentive issue has long-term negative consequences. What is the best way for administration to get reelected, having a robust economy. Sadly, this short-term incentive issue that has long-term negative consequences. So, again, who does it benefit, the incumbents. Economist Steven Landsburg argued that economics can be summarized in two words “incentives matter."
