Since the introduction of our new baby #AfricanGrey #parrot in the daily vlogs, I've been seeing a growing number of comments from people now wanting parrots and asking where I had bought my new baby bird, as well as how much it was. I wanted to create this video before people start going out to buy a parrot without thinking everything through first and knowing what kind of a commitment is involved in keeping parrots. These #pets are not just pets. I talk about all the things to consider before buying one of these beautiful animals. A parrot is essentially like adopting a child!

Welcome to my daily vlogs! TRAVEL. FOOD. COMEDY. SINGING. ANTS. LIFE.
I upload a new video every day at 7AM EST!
About Me:
My bio is pretty random: In short, I am a professional singer/songwriter from Toronto, Canada who moved to Manila, Philippines which sorta became my Hollywood because my first RU-vid channel MIKEYBUSTOSVIDEOS grew popular due to Filipino comedy videos. Meanwhile, I'm also a big biology geek who is obsessed with ants, so I built an internationally operating ant business supported by another popular channel called ANTSCANADA, and well basically, today I travel and tour around the world doing what I love so I wanted to start this vlogging channel, in hopes to encourage you guys to follow your dreams no matter how random, by showing you what happened when I followed mine! You just never know where life will take you when you listen to the yearnings of your heart!

It's good that you discussed about this Mikey. It's not easy to be a parent to a pet so people should think about it really carefully. 👍

I have an African Grey Parrot named Marko he is so Genius Parrot specially if you teaching a words can speak, but Kuya Mikey is true, that african grey parrot is so expensive i buy male african parrot in the price of 40k php but that is cheaper price because in the pet shop you can buy that in 55k to 60k php and that is a male african grey parrot, female is much expensive than the male, because you can breed an african parrot if you have male and female. Female African Grey Parrot price is 60k to 100k php that is a female. Since i have no money my african grey parrot is only 1 that is marko but i promise to him that i give her a partner soon.

Hey Mikey, I've had and african grey for 16 years now, these baby videos are bringing back so many happy memories. Another point to add to the list is the mess they create, parrot pellets thrown from the cage, bit of food tossed out, feathers everywhere and the parrot dust they shed! But even with all of these big responsibilities i would not be without my baby ( beuford ). We also travel for a month every year and she is happy staying with my mum, she has never had any of the problems people associate with african greys. Spending the time you are now with yours will make sure you have a confident adult bird. Love the content!

I'm going to chime in with recommending rats as pets - I've had many of them over the years (I have two currently) and I can't say enough good things about them. They are incredibly smart, affectionate, and clean themselves several times a day. They're basically tiny dogs, but you don't have to bathe them yourself. lol They don't take up much room, aren't fussy eaters, and will adjust to your schedule (they are more active at night but don't mind coming out to play with you during the day). Their only downside is that they don't live very long, 2-3 years typically. I've had many types of pets but I always come back to rats and highly suggest them to anyone who's looking for a pet that will be relatively easy to keep and still be able to bond with you.

I think the short lifespan is good in the consideration of childhood pets. Children tend to grow bored of a pet and when it's an animal like a rabbit (which can be pretty dull), that's then around 9 years stuck in a cage without attention. Rats are fun and should hopefully keep a child interested for those few years of life.

My parents wont let me get a rat. My cat probably wouldn't even care if we got a rat. He doesn't go outside on his own. I walk my cat. That goofball only kills bugs.

Honestly I think the two best beginner pets, if there's such a thing, are either domestic chickens, or pigeons. Both are incredibly easy to tame, very hardy with simple and very easy to optimize diets, lots of information, support and care history going for thousands of years, and they're also more independent than most birds, than dogs, and even a lot of of cats. They are very unlikely to injure an inexperienced keeper (unless it's like, a rooster) and... They're smart! They're clever and resourceful and funny and personable and come in hundreds of colours and temperaments. They're really good.

Consider having a parrot as your wife/husband or a child that won't ever grow up, that can get extremely jealous, clingy, sensitive, gets spooked, gets depressed (tendency to pluck their own feathers), territorial, normally destroys toys, has constant need for stimulation, that can't eat avocado, bad to cooking fumes, loud, constantly needing attention and love for all his/her lifetime. _If you can't handle a girlfriend/boyfriend or a human child with traits like above, think about getting a parrot._ I saw how Mikey got his parrot and fell in love. I've been researching about them for a few days now. I decided to get one, in the future. I'll be thinking about it lots more and consider a lot of things like: what type of parrot, necessities, tricks to teach, work I have to be doing, vet bills, the environment it has to live in, how I would parrot-proof my home, how I would integrate my family to be part of the flock so the parrot won't be aggressive with them etc. _Also, I might consider ditching marriage and make my parrot my lifetime partner_ 😂 _for real.?_ _I'll also be doing youtube videos in the future with the bird, though you won't know it's me._ _Think about it real hard and if you decided to get one, give it a happy and fulfilling home. Good luck us!_

I remember the time when I was in elementary school when I wanted to try keeping a parrot as a pet but then reality hit me when I found out about the challenges in keeping and maintaining them as well as how much they cost.This is why I now prefer keeping fish over most animals although I do have some dogs though as well as a cat,two turtles,and a baby Brachypelma albopilosa Tarantula (which is the only animal I keep that is the most low-maintenance).But my main focus right now is fishkeeping as a means of stress-relief as well as honing my skills in trying to replicate the natural habitat of whatever fish species that I would be keeping.

African Greys are beautiful. My sister had a cockatiel that I loved but she had to get rid of him. That was a sad day. He used to love me more than her and would snuggle in my shirt or neck. But my dream bird is a macaw. There is a rescue center not to far from me and I'm thinking of adopting a macaw. But like Mikey said, everything has to be in place. Finances and housing. Maybe one day I will get one.

My first pet bird is a cockatiel, I got him when I was 11 years old. I'm almost 26 now and he's still with me. He very active and always wistle a "hello" whenever I enter the room. I started to work at a bird trading company, and started working with all different types of birds. And then I met this African grey she was scared all plucked and couldn't get along with other birds. Because I fed her everyday and gave as much attention as I could ( because it was still work) she started to trust me enjoyed getting that head scratch. But then I had to quit my job for reasons, I couldn't just leave her there so I bought her off my boss and took her home.. she's an amazing bird. I think more people should go for rescue birds. ( Oh and btw she can't even fly.. she's not clipped or anything I think her previous owner never let her out of her cage so her muscles weren't developed as they should)

Getting a bird is a big commitment as in a huge commitment, even just a small bird will cost you alot of time cause owning parrots is about giving it the most nutritional life and the best life it can have cause these animals are wild though they have been domesticated you cannot remove the wild aspects of birds and that alone is a costly thing one diet, Birds just dont eat seeds despite it being normalized.. birds eat a assortment of different foods like mixed veggies, fruit, and a good pellet diet as well as nuts for treats. Birds also need big cages and a couple hours out of it eaach day, another thing is keeping them occupied by giving them something to forage, something to do like toys and puzzles and TRAININGG!! It is a very big aspect in owning birds or any animal that can be trained, It will help you alot to prevent agression and other issues. I just cannot explain how big of a commitment owning a bird is and people just impulsly buy these birds cause they see a big creator owning them and then their suprised that the bird they got doesnt act like the bird they saw. If you do proper research and take the time to ensure your bird get the best care then go for it but if you know nothing about birds and you just want one then dont get one cause if you dont take good care of it, it will just live a bad life under your care :(

Having most pets requires a degree of commitment. Some are much easier than others, and some are far more emotionally fulfilling. Usually, animals that are emotionally fulfilling are more challenging. Fish come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes, colors, and even personalities. They range from very easy, with the biggest expense being getting the equipment, to very difficult fish that require special equipment, food and efforts. Fish tanks can be very relaxing to watch so, if you have insomnia, you might consider putting one next to your bed. Breeding fish ranges from easy to very, very hard. One of the biggest problems I noted when I worked at an aquatic pets store is that people would buy fish that got very large, and then didn't know what to do when they got too big. The other and, for me, more important concern was the lack of concern many people had for fish. They were like moving art rather than living creatures, and cared more about the loss of money than the loss of life. That disenchanted me and I left the store. Herpetiles (reptiles and amphibians) are not necessarily easy to care for, although there are plenty that are. I've had turtles, salamanders, newts, green anoles, tokay geckos and a corn snake. If you want something cool and less likely to bother your allergies (I am allergic to hair, feathers, dander and oil from animals - riding a horse is hell!), these are certainly a great choice. The biggest problem with snakes is what they eat and trying to keep them from escaping...Unless you get venemous ones, or have an out-of-control constrictor snake. Not all reptiles are friendly, aside from snakes - tokay geckos can be very defensive and, if they bite - much like iguanas - they will hold on with a tight bite until they feel there is no more threat. It hurts, I'm told, quite a bit, and you can't drag them off your flesh without ripping yourself up! Some herpetiles are more interesting than others and, while you're not going to get tons of emotional fulfillment from most of them, they sure are interesting. I would love to have a chameleon some day - what else is more interesting? :) I think most people know about cats and dogs and, if you want emotional fulfillment, they are proven, as are many other mammals. Many people are unaware, however, that cats can be really great pets in unexpectedly social ways. You can read my article on choosing and raising a cat: steemit.com/cats/@reveurgam/how-to-train-a-dragon-wait-no-cat-if-you-d-like-a-sociable-gentle-cat-read-on. There are so many mammals out there that I can't even begin to talk about them, but I'd rather have a cat or a dog than a rabbit, guinea pig, hamster, gerbil or mouse (we've had all of them). On the high-maintenance end are wide range of mammals, with one of the best being horses (hacchoooooooooO!) Mammals are, in general, going to require more love, time, patience, money, effort and so on than the previous types of animals. I'm going to have to disagree with Mikey a bit on the bird issue. I understand that he's looking at finches from the perspective of emotional fulfillment and, truly, they are not going to be very fulfilling but, if you want to start out with something easy, a few finches will easily multiply into many given clean water, good feed, nests and enough space, and their socialization can be quite interesting. Do keep in mind that birds have distinct personalities - even finches! If, however, you want to take it up a notch then budgies and other parakeets will provide you with both the fun of finches and some emotional fulfillment. They're not terribly difficult to take care of, either. I had a cockatiel for a while but I didn't have it from when it was young. Yet, when I got it from a relative, it was an unhappy bird that tended to bite. However, with love and patience, I was able to create a wonderful bond with my Chico, and he was like a little buddy. I let his wings grow and gave him free reign of the house, which was great, except for when he'd land in my bowl of food, and on mornings when I slept in and he'd nibble gently at whatever part of me wasn't covered up to get my attention. If you want a balance of not difficult and emotional fulfillment, I can recommend them. If you're going to get anything like a cockatiel or any kind of parrot (including parakeets and cockatoos), then you have to be able to take care of them properly as Mikey discussed. My poor Chico developed a lump on one wing that he kept trying to chew off, which I couldn't afford to have it treated. :( I think the worst thing about letting your bird fly about is cleaning up the poop. ;) Whatever animal you choose, don't do it on a whim. Do your research and make sure you can actually afford to have it, otherwise it'll suffer, and you may, too!

Yes, but then that's just for the purchase of the bird. Still got the cage and toys (Need new toys regularly from boredom or destruction), food ( need variety of fresh fruits and veg too) and vet bills ( 6 month/annual check-ups outside of any sickness). The bird will cost more than raising a child in the long run.
@CheshieD
@CheshieD 5 лет назад
Well.... Debatable on the "costing more than a child" thing...... It's probably about even.... That is if you properly take care of it and don't slack off an neglect it (which is sadly what happens so a good amount of parrots bought on impulses).

Alpha That’s how much they can cost if you rescue one and they’re usually older. But a baby and from a breeder, they’re between $2,000 to $3,000. And that’s also because they hand feed and raise them along with, they’re a lot harder to get these days. When my aunt bought hers, over 30 years ago, they were $800. When I looked into getting one from a breeder, it was $3,000. I got lucky with mine and only paid $1,300 but because, the owners didn’t know how to handle him and could no longer care for him and were desperate to get rid of him. So I basically rescued him and he’s still a baby. I was lucky but, that’s not the norm. But, either way, even $1,000 is expensive! 😄

I own 3 cockatiels and I would love to have a larger parrot like a macaw, wanted one for years, but I don't have the money for it currently. Vet bills (so expensive each year) are hard enough to manage with my current birds, but hopefully I'll have enough stable income in the future. I think the main problem though is that more income usually comes with a sacrifice of time which would become the new issue. For those who want an easy pet, I recommend a cornsnake. Had one for 15 years so far. Just spot clean with full clean every few months, feed once a week and change water daily. They don't demand attention everyday, they are content just to lay in their viv.

My mom got a African grey, and it ended up being my job to clean the cage and give him food. She quickly didnt do much with him. Then my parents divorced and she just left him behind. So my dad who was working all the time found a lady who rescues African greys and uses them to teach kids and what no. I was to see him go but at that point i wasnt in a place to take care of him.

Yay you are potty training! This is a great video to make to educate about parronthood. It’s easy to fall in love with these beautiful creatures but it’s not something to get into lightly.

When you took her out of the cage, you should've offered your hands to her as a perch first so she could hop on....instead of picking her up from above....she's beautiful BTW....you're doing a great job and we can tell you love her very much.

This is a huge problem for cats an dogs as well, and those have much shorter life spans. Since they are so common as pets, a large amount gets abandoned or put down simply because people didn't THINK before getting them. During the next 10-15 years, will you move? If so, are you prepared for the added difficulty of finding a place that is suitable for pets? Are you single? Do you accept the fact that you might have to drop potential partners if they are allergic to, or dislikes your pet? Will you become a parent in the next 10-15 years? Are you prepared for the extra work and challenges of having an animal around your baby? Most people will encounter one or more of those life changes in that time frame, but very few seem to consider it before getting an animal.

But it’s true birds are lot of work and commitment they are like 2 year old human child for the rest of their life but if your are determined and have love for these smart creatures and willing to take the responsibility they are an amazing companion my first bird is a cockatoo and I love him till death

I remember how you begged for an Afro Grey in Vlog#174 way back last year...now you're a legit #BirdDaddy to Babygurl.😉 Talk about the power of LOA at it's best. Is the crate box fastened? It might topple over her head.😉

Thank you for this 😊 Your parrot looks really cute. I’m new at keeping a bird. Bought a nyassa lovebird. We call it Botan inko (peony parrot) here in japan. And I still don’t know if it’s a he or she. I call it her tho 😂😂 she’s so cute love to eat and loves to nap. This made me want to keep more birds like a budgie or a cockatoo or maybe both. But rn I live in a small space and need to save money too. Thanks for inspiring us
