Well done. The same dangers apply to kayaks. 2 young boys from Charleston SC in a small sailboat, without a sail, 1 paddle were lost at sea for 5 days and presumed dead, but luckily, they were found, nearly dead, hundreds of miles from their launch site. A recent incident from the Florida panhandle with another kayaker that disappeared but was found about 11 hours later over 2 miles from shore in near darkness. Offshore winds are seductive with the calmness of the water nearshore, but the winds can be stronger than the effects of a strong river current, you cannot save yourself!

We are going to the ocean for the first time on Saturday. My wife and I are fairly new to paddle boarding. I have downloaded the apps. Thank you for this.

Sometimes I take a kayak paddle as a back up. I find in strong headwinds the kayak paddle helps quite a bit, lower profile plus more steady paddling stroke.

I do the same. Uou can provide much higher power output with much lower wind resistance. Also, I recommend tethering it to the board so you will not lose it if you capsize.

One last in between position from the kneeling paddling position to the swimming position. I often find it best to kneel and paddle with both my hands simultaneously engaging the core. I live in Oklahoma and periodically find myself out in pretty extreme conditions you would never go out in on the ocean (30 knot winds with wild gusts) usually due to quick weather changes or getting overly optimistic during a brief lull in the wind! The kneeling position has some strong benefits over the laying position. You can maneuver your hands further out from the board to turn more effectively or paddle very hard on one side with your hand going the opposite direction on the other. Often times in high winds, just orienting the board is an incredible struggle and you won't make any progress unless you are going close to straight with or straight against the wind. When I'm in the swimming position I struggle to stay oriented well. Additionally, if you collapse all the way down into child's pose on your knees, you have about the same wind profile as laying but you can use your hands and hips to balance the board. I usually go 5-10 hard double handed paddles and then get as low as I can for a 10 count and then a stroke or two to reorient the board and 5-10 more paddles. If you do need to go cross wind when it is extremely windy, you really need to paddle upwind at a very slight angle and then downwind at a little bit more of an angle surfing the waves and trying not to dig the front of the board in. It's exhausting but much more effective than trying to go perpindicular to the waves and putting all your energy into not falling and probably falling anyways. Finally, for all my lake friends, if all else fails or you're with a friend that can't make forward progress,, stop trying so hard and save your energy, kneel or lay down, let the wind take you across the lake. Drag yourself out on that side, and figure out what to do while not drowning...better to bang up the board on some rocks or go for a really long walk than drown!

Great info. First time my daughter and I went out in Maui the ocean was like glass and not a breeze in the air. After about 20 mins the waves were knee high and winds blew us back ashore in seconds. Thankfully they were blowing that way.

My daughter and i got pulled out in monterey a couple of years ago. One minute, we were around lots of kayaker, the next monute we were absoutely alone and a significant distance from where we should have been. I swear by the Windy and Surfline apps now and always take a kayak paddle.
