Just a little tip that I'll share with you all while fitting my roof racks by myself on vehicles. Use a pumped up single air mattress or lilo to sit on top of your roof. Sit the roof rack on the mattress and adjust the air pressure to install the mounts. Then deflate the air mattress. No scratches or dents and can be done by one person!
very well explained....think people forget that when "off-roading" their vehicles are often rocking from side to side. thats were load ratings and rack strength are important. Its the side to side force that breaks the rack fittings.
Another fantastic real and transparent episode. As someone in the comments has already pointed out, you could have easility edited out the mistakes you've made fitting them, or just not mention them, but in true TT fashion, you tell it how it is. It's this honesty and transparency that makes watching your videos worth it. Keep it up mate. 👍
Agree…..It’s my biggest issue with you tubers, I don’t mind either way and good luck if they get gear for the effort they put in but just nice to know for balance. There are a couple now where I watch for the scenery and trip ideas and as soon as they start with product placement I turn off.
Tyler what I used to do many years ago was cut up a tyre tube and use a small piece to sit in the gutter and also wrap over the gutter a little so that not only the rack leg is kept off the metal but also the bracket is prevented from damaging the outer gutter at all. As long as the piece isn't any wider than the bracket no one will ever know it's there.
Nice one Tyler 👍 I had the same issues when I was looking for an official roof load rating for my 1996 80 Series LandCruiser. Nothing is listed in the owner's manual, so I submitted an online inquiry via Toyota Australia's customer service website and, they too cannot provide me any information. This really surprised me, as I see this as important as the GVM info etc. And like you, I've looked online and it seems to suggest anywhere between 100kg-150kg. And if the LC200 has an official 200kg roof load rating via a roof mount, I figured, 150kg via a rain gutter mount across eight legs would be safe. PS. My roof rack came standard with several strips of rubber for the RR base. I'm surprise Front Runner does not provide these also.
front runner racks r really gud. i got my front runners wen u had the prob with the other brand n u showed the front runners which i knew nothing bout. i have 2 front runners, one for my ram 1500 canopy which carries my james baroud roof tent n the other is on my xr8 canopy. i have the 2 tables n 2 270 awnings n there the best 2 acc by far, there awesome. the whole thing bout ur channel is ur honesty bout cost sponsorships failures n wat u cant do n wen u try to do the mistakes u make. YT channels just dont do this, creds to u TT.
Hey mate, I’d go purely off your manual stating 100KG as that’s the only documentation you have for the car of that age. Yes they may say 120kg per 3 bar set however that’s what the 3 bars will hold, not necessarily what the roofs’ guttering will hold safely before ripping off - all you’re doing is spreading the weight further along the guttering. The way I look at it - 100KG across two bars = 50KG per bar. 120KG across 3 bars = 40KG per bar. You mention the 100KG / 2 bar has 4 points of contact = that’s 25KG per point of contact. The 120KG / 3 bar has 6 points of contact = 20KG per point of contact. 150KG rack / 8 points of contact = 18.75KG per point of contact. So even though your front runner rack may have more points of contact, it is actually less weight per point of contact ... I don’t think putting a rack up with say 10 points of contacts, would necessarily allow 300-400KGs if that makes sense because it’s still the guttering that is holding up all that weight. I’d play it safe and go off the manuals 100KG and be safe rather than sorry. That’s only my take on it anyway. I do like the look and style of the front runner racks but Holy Dooley - $3,500 grand odd with the table, crikeys ! Great clip as always mate. Cheers Tyler and keep up the good work bud. 😉👍🇦🇺
That was well done Tyler, nice to see you doing your own work. Looks like a great set up for the Patrol. I don't think you can reinforce enough the importance of understanding load limits, as your unfortunate experience shows.
You missed mentioning how much this rack will increase your ride height by..... you don't want to take the rack off the 1st time you drive into a car park.
@24:30 that table stash is magic. I made something similar for my shelf system inside. Saves so much time and frustration when setting up! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CO9fi5J5Ruw.html
NICE RIG , gunna be a lil bit more top heavy than the other beast , UPGRADES drive it first see WHAT YOU NEED in it for your style of driving (best of luck man) ✌✨✌
Hi Tyler Started my 2021 Hilux build on Friday . Pre fuel fitter, catch can and dyno tuned . Rack,Awning, compressor and lights on order , yes it’s expensive but a lot of fun .
Its 100 Kg, --> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n6wt6d_xvrA.html and Owners Manual on page 3-23 --> "The roof rack is designed to carry loads below 100 kg. Overloading may cause damage to the vehicle."
It comes down to manufactures specifications mate, thats what the goons will look at if you have any issues.Just like insurance they will find any grey area to not cover any issues if anything goes wrong. If the most weight Nissan says is 120kg for the three bar rack with 6 mounting points, then unfortunately no matter how many more mounting points you have you are still governed to that 120kg load rating in there eyes. If Chris below can send you more information on load ratings then sweet as, but like you said you will need documentation to prove this.
I've got on my 4.8 GU an alloy roof rack and its not been a problem loading it with myself (90kg) and 4x30l of petrol and much of other stuff, and going through Simpsons with this (excluding myself from the roof rack lol) with no consequences. So i am pretty sure its not 100kg load capacity. Which you mentioned one can load whatever wants to )) Cheers!
Brilliant video mate...Nice to take us with you though full explain, assembly and installation...unlike most of other videos just happy with their fancy stuff and showing off with slow motion
Good idea with hose on mounting feet, I had an ARB rack on my GU and it came with rubber pieces that fit under the feet to stop paint damage which would lead to rust. I am surprised that Front Runner don’t supply.
That was cool, you could of just edited out your mistakes but that is what your filming is about and makes your episodes enjoyable, with a laugh as well.. Great to see or honest and opinions on the product your using. 👍🏼
Ill still be running that table on the nav, Ill be consistently using both 4wds on trips so just want to minimise the amount of gear I have to constantly swap back and forth between them and on family trips we will take both 4wds and then have two tables 😁
Na mate you got it all wrong. Even if you follow all the "rules" insurance can just say you didn't fit it properly and the Karen's of the world will say, if it wasnt up there in the first place this would never of happened and all the roof racks will be banned by the greens cause they don't want you going off road. 🤣🤣🤣
Love the new patrol videos. 2k for a roof rack seems super expensive but at least you are transparent with the prices. Looking foward to your first hard tracks after a lift and some decent tyres. You'll never drive the nav again haha
Obviously the manufacturers are deliberately vague. Once u use a different roof rack u get a different rating…. Just like shocks…. All this nonsense abt referring back to manufacture ratings in every instance is starting to get ridiculous… as they only give a rating on manufacture roof racks…
Im a carpenter by trade i loaded up 500kilos of timber no worries at all i know bit sketchy and I should’ve strapped better before few of my timber touched the sky!
give your insurance company a ring and ask them what weight you’re insured to carry on the roof, if they can’t give you an answer, get that in writing and go off the paperwork you’ve found
It's pisspoor that Nissan themselves don't have an official rating. I am going to ring a company in Melbourne who allegedly makes roof strengthening rails that fit in under the roof lining.
I had a thought here. Your insurance company will know the roof load limits...... they are always keen to deny claims and will find any excuse, they will have every spec known to humankind. Drop them a message.
With the roof racks, you don't need to stress as it sits on the gutters not bolted or riveted to the roof. Don't think anyone would have lost insurance by being a little over weight. People get insurance with boats on their roof that would 100% be over 150kg
Abother great video mate. I have a TB48 running 33s and am in Victoria the nanny state so can't leagaly go larger. I find the power of the 4.8 turns doey and am going to run 4.11 diff gears and while I'm at it an air locker for the front as I'm told there stronger. If you go bigger tyres such as 33s or even 35s I'd look at diff gears. The Re5 auto works better with the right tyre size and diff combo. Are you going to run a lock up lit for the tranny or reduction gears for the transfer case?
Thanks mate, yep lock up converter is on the list of things to get, going to do 4.3 diff gears when I do the lockers, Ill see how it goes after that as to whether I want the reduction gears too or not
@@TylerThompson90 I follow Daniel Kistler on youtube and he runs a shimmed rear LSD and front airlocker on his white GQ. When I see the places he goes with the set up he has I'm thinking about the same set up minus the shimmed LSD. Check out what I'm saying here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J1_5n4jLHcA.html
Thanks Tyler I love the DIY videos. Keep up the good work mate. I thought the legs would have come with a small rubber boot over the base which sits in the gutter. Di the clamp come with a protector on it?
Good explanation of the limits of load rating for the GQ patrol.. even though your still trying to get a definitive answer of the load rating. Looks like a sturdy roof rack. I like the 8 mount system too, distribution of weight is important as you know. You should be fine for your intended use...👍
Yeah very true my mum put roof racks on her Datsun years ago so she could pick my dad up from the club when he was drunk but quickly found out that he was to heavy when the roof caved in.
Tyler,, you're doing a sterling job, great cost breakdown, and not just glance over and omit the cost of things that your sponsors gave you. Please keep adding your out takes at the end!!!
Tyler, Such great content and videos. Love how you show any stuff ups as you progress in your build we all do things wrong and we learn from it as we build/fit out our rigs. Totally understand why you stress about roof rack weights after what happened with the nav. Keep up the great work. Cannot wait to see the build videos
Regardless of brand, weight, load ratings. The biggest issue with your rhino disaster was pop riveting it to a Milo tin. The amount of rhino gear on car roofs around Australia is probably mind boggling and yet we don't see them everywhere ripped off vehicles.
Great info in this video mate. It is mine boggling that Nissan or any other manufacturer cannot give exact load ratings for their vehicles. How is the average Joe supposed to know what to do when installing Roofracks
Very impressive my man.. good video.. great watch.. can't wait for the next build vid.. p.s the beard is looking sharp too.. might need a beard sponsor 😂😂
People who are not liable will tell you the higher rating, Nissan won’t tell you because it’s makes them liable especially if in writing, why they always resort to the bar that is their OEM product. Problem is the idiot factor today is so high that even when spelled out 1 + 1 which equals 2 people still get 10, so dated if ya do dames if ya don’t, even people who know better IMO ignore GVM load and roof rack load and it’s getting worse not better, just like rubbish and crap at camp sites and on tracks. Great vid though dude, all you can do is keep trying to lead people to water. Front runner must be making a killer at the. I and only sponsored big channels are using Rhino racks they must be bleeding like a White pointer attack at the moment in tossed sales, sure plenty of easy targets walk into ya ARB and load up in ignorant bliss just like the GVM loads. I’m ex Army, so travelling light as possible is ingrained in me, but it def gets harder as ya get older, ya sacrifice a bit for comforts and the crap we can buy today to take bush is just amazing and a I find myself making a list what I need vs what I want more and more it is hard to stick to it, but I keep roof to a minimum and only light weight, heavier stuff is low down to the chassis/ vehicle floor as possible, I had my clamp system made in alloy one long rail style, lower stronger but I don’t use it to load more just prefer the support the look and lower to roof as possible figment and look, I’m not interested in anything able to fit underneath the rack and roof, my tab,e slides of from my Drifta draws, I prefer that keeps everything clean and easier to access, the only thing I don’t like is how high it is sitting on top of your GU. You bring up great info clear and concise cheers 🤘 Happy and safe trails,🤙
From the page you posted at 3:50 wish its says use a safety factor of 1.5 for extreme off road conditions - I read that to be 120/ 1.5 = 80kgs as the dynamic load but yes its all a bit vague.
Yeah that's for those Nissan branding roof bars, but then I confirmed with front runner the rack I got off them does not have a safety factor of 1.5. Some companies do it and some don't
Mate do you self a favour and go around over a few days and put a little blue medium grade loctite on all the bolts on the rack. Stops it shaking them loose over time and falling out.
Yeah I have to agree that the Front Runner rack is the benchmark for racks. My last was a Rhino and I loved it. Never let me down and pretty tough. I have to say what happened to the Navarra with the Rhino had everything to do with how it was mounted and nothing to do with the rack. Gutter mounted racks are always strongest and will allow for greater weight carrying. Putting that frontrunner rack together is a mission but Crikey it's worth it. PS. I like that rubber idea in the gutter but you may find water may not drain passed the legs. Thanks for sharing Cheers Mick
Tyler, I too sought information for my 2015 GU wagon. Found the confusing variations that you also came across so went to Nissan. After several unsuccessful attempts, ended up with the following from Nissan (complete with the punctuation they used): "there is no limit spec is based on the roof rack load limit on the part EG Nissan roof racks are rated 100kg for the dual and 120 for the triple rails system if using aftermarket racks use the recommended weight from the supplier if damage occurs due to the weight when using aftermarket racks then the supplier should be contacted". Also I believe there is no requirement to subtract the weight of the racks from the limit of the rack (not the roof load limit) as those specs are the carrying capacity of the rack. Definitely need to subtract that from the roof load limit as the rack forms part of that load.
While you’re talking weights you should run that patrol over a weigh bridge after each mod or get a starting weight then keep a tally. I’m at 2.9t with just me in the vehicle, full tanks of diesel, alloy rack with nothing on it, steel front bar with winch and custom drawers. I’m looking at a gvm upgrade so I can then take the wife and 4 kids and load a camper trailer.
Usually love your stuff Tylezz but you've bassically covered all this before and man is it a boring subject 🤣 keen to see what else you do to the GU though
Great job Tyler, she's coming along nicely mate. You must be so excited doing up your new 4B... I understand what you're saying about doing most things yourself as I have taken around 18 months doing up our 80 series. Keep doing what you do mate, you're a legend.
Good job! Following the build with interest. You should do the tune next from Brad Smith that I mentioned in your previous video. Shouldn't have to wait for any parts on that one lol. (I know you have the exhaust coming, but it would be interesting to see what gains you get before and after with and without the tune etc.)
