Don't Kill Your Plants! Harden Them Off Like This Right Now!

On today's 2 minute garden tip, I share how to harden off plants and acclimate transplants started indoors to sunlight. Failure to do so could kill transplants if they were started indoors under grow lights. True sunlight is strong and contains harsh UV rays that plants must acclimate to prior to transplanting. Don't kill your plants and do this first!

WOW!!!! What about in a greenhouse? I grew my tomatoes in my greenhouse and thenI hardened them to get used to the wind for a week or two. I planted them in the ground two weeks ago.(Only one fell over with a recent wind storm but it started rooting at the bend so I left it) BUT, I never thought about sunlight vs grow lights!!! You are a wealth of information!!!

Greenhouse plants still need acclimation. The greenhouse plastic, polycarbonate panels, glass, etc. all block UV, so if you simply carry the plants outside into real sun, they will get smoked. You absolutely must slowly acclimate them. Greenhouses should be considered indoor growing environments.

Finally, someone explained the specifics of how to do this! Every other explanation I've heard or read has been nebulous at best. Thank you for so very clearly explaining the process! 👍

I live in a very windy place. I started years ago wrapping tomato cages with black landscape fabric. My belief is it protects the plants from the wind and helps draw heat to the plants. If you are getting a late frost you just go out with some garbage bags and pull them down over the cages. Sounds weird but it has worked well for years for me!

My yard is lined with black weed barrier, not just to suppress weeds, but to create a warmer microclimate for my container garden. I tested it to add 3-5 degrees when the sun is out. The downside: it needs shade cloth overhead in summer.

I've never done that gradual harding off since the first year of growing plants from seed. I put my seedlings grown under grow lights outside in a tote covered with tulle or a small hoop house covered in insect netting. I find the tulle and insect netting provide enough shade that the plants don't get burnt. I take them outside and keep them out day and night...unless a cold night comes. After 3 days or so, I plant them out in the garden...either on an overcast day or in the evening. I've never lost a seedlings or plant.👩🏾‍🌾

You may be able to do that under a cover. My garden is too large to do so. The hardening off process is pretty easy if you buy those seed tray bottoms and get inserts, since you can carry out dozens at the same time. If you start things in 72-cell trays, you can basically harden them all off at once pretty easily.

I don't harden my indoor starts much before planting bc where I live we have horrendous winds throughout early spring. I mean, turn the horizon brown with dirt level winds. Because of these winds I wrap my tomatoes, peppers, and broad leaf plants like zucchini with a thin weed barrier. It acts as both a wind barrier and sun shade. And for me, this method has worked great. Again, I do harden some but not near as much as you may. I wanted to every day of this last week but most days the winds were awful. Next year I'll have an outdoor greenhouse tent to put my seedlings in for the month before planting.

Keep in mind greenhouse plastic, polycarbonate, glass, etc. all block UV, so any seedlings grown in greenhouses need slow acclimation to real sun. If you carry them outside into full sun, they will get cooked.

Great Great Tip. I'm a Newby that will be Sq Ft planting in a community garden, so I trust this is crucial to all seedlings. My question is, I'm going away for 8 days, should I keep them in the window or under the grow light? Thanks so much for your input ❣️
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 3 месяца назад
That is a very difficult question, because I do not know your situation. How far along are the seedlings? How consistent and reliable is the window light? If you use the grow lights, is there a chance the seedlings will outgrow them in 8 days? The answer is do the thing you can set up the most reliably. That will *probably* be grow lights, because you can automate timers and such, but you must make sure they can survive for 8 days without manual watering. Irrigation is *key.*

Thank you for responding... I do have a timer on the lights and someone to water every other day. I just need to adjust the height of the lights. Wish me luck 😊

Another awesome video!!It’s April 23 in Las Vegas and temps should be 80 but we are at 88-94 degrees already. I planted my indeterminate tomatoes in my raised bed 8 days ago after trying to aclimate them as instructed.Some of the leaves had that sunburn look as you show here but not as bad and a wierd grayish Fungus before i transplanted them.Didnt know what that was but now i do.. I built an A frame and put it over my raised bed and covered it with the 40% shade cloth. It is too hot and UV rays from the sun will burn any vegetable here.Thankyou for your video about shade covers and the link to the site u buy them from! Its a 40% shade cloth. Do you think thats enough for the desert sun? Or would you reccomend going to a 55% or more barrier? Plz help. Im a beginner at year three. Last two years plants didnt do well at all i think in part to the soil i was using in my bed…competely revamped this year based on your videos….and also cuz my trees i have could only shade them for a few hours. Any advice would be much appreciated and helpful 😊
@clarencerswann1360
@clarencerswann1360 3 месяца назад
Do you think making use of some shade cloth to cut some of the UV strength would be okay for leaving them out longer? Over the weekend I left out my peppers that were started in Feb out in the midday sun and forgot, just about everything got leaf droop. Brought them back in near a south window and they perked up again by the evening. No noticeable sun scald, leaves still look quite healthy, but that did give me a scare. I'm in 7a and our shoulder seasons are schizophrenic... like it was in the 80sF (27C) followed by days of rain, and we had a frost advisory last night and again for overnight tonight. I'm hoping to have these in the ground by this weekend or next week.

I bring mine out under my shade cloths for a couple weeks then move them to a permanent home. Keeping the littler peppers in the center. That has worked for me the past few years.

Do you prefer cara cara oranges or blood oranges? For flavor, juicyness, cold tolerance, and harvest size?
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 3 месяца назад
They don't really taste alike. Blood oranges, at least the Moro variety I grow, is low in acid, sweet, mild and has a raspberry flavor. Cara Cara's taste more like an orange. They are acidic, tart and strong. If I could only grow one, I'd grow the Cara Cara, but it's very subjective.

20 gallon. You will need to mulch them well during summer, because they dry out fast in heat.

What if they are grown in the greenhouse??
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 3 месяца назад
You will need to acclimate them. Greenhouse grown transplants will be a little more sun tolerant right off the bat, but greenhouse film, polycarbonate, glass, etc. all block UV, so they need an acclimation period to prevent sunburn or scorching.
