11:30 actually fun fact about gender reveal parties (by another person who hates them): they originated by a woman who was celebrating that she had a pregnancy term that lasted long enough to be told the designated sex of her baby (as she had lost several pregnancies prior) and because she just really enjoyed holding parties for any occasion. Focusing on the baby’s gender wasn’t really the point of the original party, it was moreso an aspect of her pregnancy journey that she chose to celebrate. The mother now regrets her part in creating gender reveal parties, as her understanding of gender has become more nuanced (especially as the child that said party was about has a broader gender expression than what is usually stereotyped) and because those derivative parties inspired by hers (particularly the more over-the-top viral ones) have become increasingly dangerous

TLDR - Wikipedia "Gender reveal party", reference note 7. An article from The Guardian from 26th July 2019, explains that the originator was a lady in Chicago, who had had several miscarriages. In 2008, When she FINALLY carried a fetus for long enough to even be able to TELL what the gonads were going to be, she was so happy that she'd made it this far. So she held a party, similar to a baby shower, where the family and friends gathered to celebrate that the fetus was old enough to even KNOW the gonad configuration. Not sure if the original party held it as a secret from the mother or father... I think THEY knew, and had requested a cake with pink inside to reveal to their loved ones that it would be a girl. This party was reported in a local Chicago-area parenting magazine (this family was upper-middle class and white, and therefore popular enough to report on, by such a publication), and then this story got picked up by larger and larger markets, so the idea went national over the next few years. And this is right around early 2010s, right at the rise of social media. Soooo, straight white people in various places around the country get competitive with it, to get Facebook clout. Bigger and bigger reveals, bigger guest lists, spending, reactions for social media. It's been over 10 years. There was an alligator, an exploding car, a wildfire... In 2018, on the 10th anniversary of her party, the lady herself posted to her blog "High Gloss and Sauce" on Insta, that she never intended it to be like this, and isn't that happy that she is now remembered as the originator. AND FINALLY, some ironic and wholesome news about the whole thing - that baby girl that was announced in 2008? Has come out as non-binary.
