René Flächsenhaar and Gregor Fris destroy some bass tones to resurrect them using a buffer pedal. Thanks to Providence Ltd for making this video possible, we used their Vitalizer BF Buffer. Find out more: www.providence-...

this box, just like every buffer, basically just drops the output impedance of the signal coming out of it, which means it pushes more current through the cable while following the signal's voltage. the output resistance and the capacitance of the cable build a low-pass filter. the lower the signal's impedance is, the higher the filter's cutoff frequency gets and vice versa. thus more treble is present with buffered signals. the same effect as active pickups (buffer circuit within pickup's housing) or active onboard electronics (always a buffer stage) have. even some tuner pedals have a buffered bypass. if you have the buffer onboard, the bass itself gets a low output impedance. otherwise the effect starts after the buffering pedal. my opinion on the sound you can get: imho passive basses work really well with all kinds of distortion pedals for their smooth highs while active basses (or buffered signals) tend to get harsh even with reduced treble within the pedal because you bring in the very airy treble content into the distorion circuit beforehand. active basses or buffered signals on the other hand give a very nice hifi type of sound. more of the basses frequency spectrum is present. nice for very tight, precise tones. thumbs up for the nice comparison! :)

This is the first time that someone explained it without using phrases like 'symetrisation of signal'.

Where should it go in a signal Chain with a sansamp bddi and compressor? Just wondering because my rick is lacking some mids and treble. At first I thought it was the amp but it sounds ok going straight to the amp.

If anyone is interested, the input impedance is 1MΩ and the output impedance is 470Ω. Been looking for this info and had to email Providence to find out.

Thank you, I was searching everywhere and could not find the answer. According to the Rig Doctor it should have an impedace between 2.2Ω and 10Ω for bass. I'll just get the Lehle Sunday Driver.

I keep a boss pedal in my chain that's always off as a buffer. Works for me as a cheap solution. Particularly, I seem to end up practical conversation through a PA a lot. It makes a hug difference putting a low impedance signal into a PA line input as opposed to just straight passive bass in.

For the non-technical people out there, this pedal Will make every cup of coffee taste as if it were made with freshly ground beans.

Thanks to Samuel Venditti below, I found out this buffer has a 1Ω input impedance. That's great for guitar, but according to the Rig Doctor (Vertex Effects) it should have an impedance between 2.2Ω and 10Ω for bass. I'll just get the Lehle Sunday Driver for my passive basses as active basses and basses with active preamps are already buffered.

I liked your review. Especially your final comment about the other device. If musicians give objective reviews like this one, manufacturers would have to produce competitive equipment.

Is this what the buffer on the Polytune 3 does?

How would one know it's time to add a buffer? Would it go at the end of signal chain?

On the jazz bass, I would use the buffer but crank the bass end up beforehand.

What about more examples with effect pedals, specifically distortion/drive pedals that cut bottom end?

How true is it that buffers kill distortions?
@ot4kon

only before some old vintage fuzzes. is being said that you don't buffer or compress before fuzz. but after is beneficial of you are running long cables. that is why they give you a super long coiled cable to notice the effect. using short cables or the simple buffer in a boss pedal in bypass modd could fix the problem.

Could you compare this with the Boss TU-2 or 3? With the buffers in those tuners? Just curious to hear the difference.

I’m currently having issues with my tone sounding thin in certain systems and I think it’s because my pedal and pre set tone. At home all my settings sound great but when at church or on gigs I find it compromises a lot of the juice. You reckon getting one of these will help?

so if you have something like a peterson strobe with impedicance would i still want one at th end before my DI?

That seems unnecessary. DI is already a stabilized signal

damn, sounds awesome. do you know of anything in pedal format that can do a similar dual filter sound? also cheers for getting back to me :)
@basstheworldofficial
@basstheworldofficial 7 лет назад
+Thomas McAteer I guess you can emulate this sound by using 2 envelope filters. Although the Bi-Filter was in parallel mode for this, which is a bit tricky to do with pedals. There is a pedal version of this from Musitronics (the guy who made the Mu-Tron and designed the Bi-Filter for EHX) but this a is horribly expensive vintage unit. I guess the MuTron is the pedal that gets closest to this. The original designer just reissued it with his new brand Mu-FX.
@TacticalHyena
@TacticalHyena 7 лет назад
i guess you could run a couple of line selectors and split the signal, send each signal to a separate filter and then join the two back together, that'd get them in parallel wouldn't it ?
@basstheworldofficial

and don't forget a bit of clean tone for good measure ;)

hahahah dude they give you a long coiled cable for a reason. put a boss pedal in bypass and you get the same.
