Get a 27inch Studio display 5K display you won't regret! Better to buy something good from start rather than making a collection out of monitors (my experience)! PS>(Don't look on lg ultrafine 5k they have ports problems, if broken it becomes unusable)

I run a triple system on a MacMini 2018. Having 2x 27" in 2560x1440 and my main is a 40" in 4k. All is unscaled. I also have two iMacs with 5k and while they are nicer, it doesn't matter for programming. How many lines i see and how many tool windows i can put on the side is important. And with XCode you really need as much real estate as you can get.

Hi @Aivars, This was a nice video! I'm watching your videos as a programmer to get great insight from you. I'm working on the MacBook, so looking for the best monitor setup for me. So I plan to set up a dual monitor with 24 inches (to use it vertically) + 32 inches since you don't seem to recommend the 49-inch ultra-wide monitor yet. what do you think about LG 32" 4K UltraFine Ergo 32UN880-B? and I wonder if there is a 24 inches monitor you can recommend to me. Can you please recommend me the 24 inches monitor? Oh, and btw do you think LG 43UN700-B Monitor UHD 43" is a good monitor for programming?

I never tried a 43" monitor, but I think that 4K will not be enough for that screen size. I know nothing about 24" monitors, bought last one about 5 years ago :)

Very helpful information, indeed; this video helped me tremendously. I have decided to invest in the Studio Display; which I'm betting will last me a good long while. If you're like us (getting on in years, and staring at code all day-or any type of text for that matter), proper PPI makes all the difference; particularly for helping with the eye endurance required to plug through those marathon coding sessions that we get into rather regularly!

This is a great breakdown. Thank you! Maybe a suggestions for people on a tighter budget can be the “old” LG ultrafine 5K. On second hand market you can get at around 600€.That is what I am planing to switch from my current 4K 32” monitor. I tried so many different things. And it end up with the similar conclusions as you. 4K -> at least 32” 27” -> 5K or 1440p 24” -> 1080p or 4K with 2x “native” scaling. All the other options get some weird situation on the middle that are either not very sharp or has weird scaling. I also ended up just using my MacBook open under he monitor and use itas keyboard and trackpad. I keep the MacBook monitor just chat/music stuff and do all the work on the monitor. That way the neck does not hurt, occupies less space on the desk as I do not need so many accessories and it is easier to have the same workflow for the different workspaces I get to.

Can cofirm on the 27’ LG 5K option, it’s basically designed for macOS. I did extensive research on this scaling topic and this is the monitor I bought. To my eyes it delivers basically the same exact quality pictures as the native macbook pro 14’, the only downside is that it’s still 60Hz panel. I may get another one in the future to extend my setup but currently I can honestly say that it’s a joy to my eyes to do programming and other non GPU intensive work with LG 5K
@AivarsMeijers
@AivarsMeijers Год назад
I heard that those 5K LG ultrafine are very unreliable and can broke any moment. If you are lucky and it will work for you, then sure that is great budget option. I had no chance to get it used and 1K+ price for new one just didn't feel right. For 600 € I would buy that. You still getting good display in right scale for macOS for decent price, so why not.

This is a great video but I feel like you didn't quite finish the 32" discussion. You recommend getting a 1440 27" (if you dont want to shell out for Studio Display), but is it then also true that you would recommend a 1440 32" as well? I'm working usually in Figma on my 27" 4K (Samsung, ~300 euro), and I found that the middle scaling is the best for me but the performance drops so much so you can notice it while you're dragging some layers on your workspace. I decided to stick to the 1440p since it changes performance, but not that much. I thought it can be because it's scaling without float for most of the sizes on your screen, still not sure
@AivarsMeijers
@AivarsMeijers Год назад
Scaling takes a lot of resources and Figma is GPU heavy app, that is the reason for performance dropdown. You can test how Mac works for the same tasks without external monitor and you will see how much Figma impacts your Mac.

What is the good size for coding purpose for 4K? Is it 27” or 32”?
@AivarsMeijers
@AivarsMeijers Год назад
For 4K, I choose 32", especially if you are going for one monitor setup. For my eyes, 27" in 4K is too tiny for comfortable work. But it is a subjective choice. Compare both if you can to see how you feel about it.

The info in your video is appreciated but why include your trip to get your car serviced? The audience needed to wait 2 minutes to actually see what any monitor and relevant visuals.
@AivarsMeijers
@AivarsMeijers 7 месяцев назад
Because another part of the audience is interested to see more behind the scenes content which helps to make connection between us and creates community around this youtube channel. I care more about that part of audience and do not worry too much if video is not getting the most possible views. 1 true fan is more important for me than 100 viewers who jumping on one of my video just to get answer on some question and then are gone forever. Also, it is more fun for me to make videos like this. Sitting in front of computer and reading text from telepromter is boring as hell ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ As soon as his RU-vid channel will become boring chore I will stop doing videos.

In a just and fair world we will have 36-38 inch 4K. 32 a bit too small for 4k, 43 a bit too big.

after 7 years of studying computer science I just recently did buy my first monitor hahah. now it seems so silly to me. I was working on a tiny laptop screen all that time. now having a 27inch screen everything is so much easier. somehow my work is not as tiring than before... haha. I did go big for the apple studio display as I did not want a compromise that does not fully satisfy what I am looking for and the only other alternative was the lg 5k since I am working on a Mac. btw really appreciate your videos, the put me in a good mood somehow. keep it going.
