In most movies children are coddled and protected, so adults are usually sacrificed to protect them so they survive to the end. This scene made the movie real. You foul up, you die. Three innocent mistakes were made by three different people, and it cost the entire family dearly. It told us that no one's effing around.

This scene was actually a huge relief. I thought for sure they were gonna spend the whole movie trying to stop that kid from making noise.

Imagine having to hold in every fart and every sneeze the rest of your life because they make too much noise.

Why would you let one of your youngest children walk 50 meters behind the entire pack, unsupervised during an extinction level monster invasion.

As the quiet kid, I find this an absolute win

Leaves toy and batteries laying in front of kids face and walks away. Hikes home thru monster infested area and leaves child to bring up the rear 50 yards behind the rest of the family. Seems like exactly what you’d do if you wanted to get rid of a kid.

Kids are such a liability in a situation like this.

Why didn’t the Dad keep the batteries? Could’ve found a compatible flashlight along the route and kept the toy from turning on.

What I don't understand is that he's a small child and there's a monster around why in the world he is far behind instead of being with the parents.

Plot twist: The entire apocalypse is actually just a prank by Dwight, just to get back at Jim.

NO parent, would have their little one trailing behind if the situation was like this. I don’t ever let my kids trail behind.. anywhere.

I think this scene established the tone of this world really well. Most of it is silent and when there is something about to make noise it is made to feel threatening. And then when there is the loud noise of the toy, we feel a sense of panic. I think it also stresses the “survival of the fittest” aspect of the movie. Kids are dumb and he knew better but he was a kid and that unfortunately meant that he didn’t have much of a chance surviving for that long. It also kind of introduces the characters and their personalities just by the way they react to this tragedy. This movie is crazy good dude

In that situation, with aliens chasing people for any tiny noise, let the batteries and the toy alone with him is the most horrific way those parents find out to get rid of their son (and his sister helps to that too).

I can tell you right now me walking barefoot on railroad tracks is not a recipe for silence.

Ngl, him dying here was a massive relief for the rest of the family. If he wasn’t so far away they would all be dead, and if this situation didn’t happen he would get them killed anyways.

I love the soothing jazz in the teaser right afterwards. lol

Strange for kid, he've definitely seen these creatures before and should learnt quickly how dangerous they are, but no.

The fact that the kid survived even that long is a miracle

After watching this movie, kids wouldn't want to walk last.

Made no sense you would let the little kid walk behind you like that. Would be like walking across the street and letting your child lag behind. Not to mention later it showed they had a gun. Why wouldn't that be an essential part of each dangerous trip? Always ruins movies for me when characters go against such obvious everyday logic in situations without reason.

Not a dry eye in the house, laughing so hard.

It’s such a great opening because it was foreshadowing the little boys death. From him drawing the rocket on the ground, telling his sister that “it’s how they’ll get away” to almost dropping the toy from the shelf… all signs were pointing to his inevitable end, we just didn’t know it. When witnessing his death, and I think I can speak for most, that we knew this little boy would have never been able to survive this horrific world. It was bound to happen at some point, and it happened right in the very beginning. It’s incredibly sad, but also genius writing.

The girl knows the monster attacks anything that makes sound *gives a loud rocket to a kid* and yes I know the girl is deaf

This has to be the only child death in cinema that made me feel nothing. It just didn't feel real in any way. You can't explain that kind of stupidity with "he's just a kid." He is just completely devoid of survival instinct.

Not so long ago, American and Western films in general and horror films in particular excluded violent footage towards children, but we note that not so long ago, horror and violence films have become more focused in their story on showing that why they want to break this rule in Hollywood especially and the West in general

The kid didn’t notice his dad running towards him or the fact his family was walking away 💀

Reality. The sister got him killed. The dad had set that aside. If the daughter doesn't give the toy back to the boy once the parents backs are turned, the boy probably doesn't pick it and the batteries back up. That said parents should know when they tell a small child no regarding a toy they need to usher the kid out and make sure he doesn't pick it back up once your back is turned. That said you don't expect your teenage daughter to do that. You'd think after surviving in that world a bit that she would be mature enough to understand her little brother can't have a noise making toy even if the batteries are removed as he might find batteries at some point.
