In today's 2 minute garden tip, I share a common mistake new tomato growers often make growing tomatoes. New gardeners sometimes fail to discern between indeterminate tomato varieties and determinate tomato varieties. These two tomato types grow very differently, and treating them the same can have catastrophic consequences. Don't make this critical mistake growing tomatoes!

Yep, me too. As a child, we grew large gardens each year and we had ample space for sprawling tomatoes. As an adult, I have continued the tradition on a smaller scale but somehow a few years ago stumbled into the sucker thing. Here I am, 71 years old, and until about two weeks ago, did not know the distinction, and it if weren't for my recent interest in heirloom tomatoes, I likely still wouldn't. It's good to know there's still a lot we can learn, right? Thanks for driving the lesson home.

The major difference between determinate and indeterminate tomatoes is that determinates tend to flower at the same time and bear fruit at the same time. In other words, you get your crop all at once. Indeterminates flower all summer long and therefore you get fruit all summer long. If you are a canner, you probably want all your tomatoes to ripen at the same time (determinates) so you only have to do that chore once in the summer. If you like to munch on tomatoes all summer, indeterminates are the way to go. A mixture of both kinds of plants will keep you in tomato heaven well into the winter, depending on how much you canned earlier.
@billyandrew
@billyandrew Год назад
One is a bush, the other a vine.
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips 10 месяцев назад
I disagree with that notion. Determinates grow as a bush. Indeterminates grow as a vine. That's really the only difference. Because determinate tomatoes grow as a bush, their vertical growth is fixed, not indeterminate. That allows it to concentrate its energy into the ripening process once fruits reach mature size. Determinate tomatoes do not ripen all their fruit at once. It takes 3-6 weeks or longer depending on the variety. They're just dramatically more efficient at doing so. Indeterminate tomatoes are just terrible at ripening fruit, because they're too busy trying to produce new suckers. While it may seem like an indeterminate tomato produces fruit all summer, what's actually happening is it's dragging out a harvest. Something like a Celebrity determinate will produce more tomatoes than a Brandywine Sudduth, but it will ripen its crop so quickly that you could actually plant a whole new successive crop. In the time it takes for a Brandywine Sudduth to ripen its crop, you could've grown 2 entire Celebrity crops in that same square footage, producing 2-3x more tomatoes in a single season.

This answered all of my questions about why my seed packets (for bush and dwarf tomatoes) said “do not prune.” Especially for the dwarf plant because it is listed as an indeterminate. What I was learning (about pruning) and observing in my plants was NOT aligning with the directions on the seed packets and I wanted to understand what I was missing. I did a LOT of searching before landing here… THANK YOU for clarifying. 🙏

I’ve been growing plants for 26 years since I was 10 years old, went to school for horticulture, agriculture and greenhouse management, on indeterminate varieties of tomatoes always remove the suckers. It focuses the energy to growing a single vine. Keeping suckers on indeterminate varieties causes slower growth the older the plant gets because the energy is being distributed to more and more new areas as suckers form and are left to grow. My growing season is early March through early October, and using the method of removing the suckers throughout the season, I’ve grown indeterminate tomato plants as large as 27 ft long by the end of the season, depending on variety! For determinate varieties, or bush tomatoes, however it is best to let the suckers form into new branches and bush out because the plant is going to reach a certain height, put out its fruit and then die back… regardless of how many branches it has, so with bush determinate varieties, the more branches, the more fruit…

@AliRadicali
@AliRadicali 8 месяцев назад
In my experience, it is unfortunately very common for practical experts to only know the rule, not the explanation for the rule, and not just when it comes to gardening/botany. For example, your doctor might know the correct procedures and checklists, but not necessarily the science behind these things. Which is fine so long as they are dealing with common scenarios they encounter daily, but it becomes an issue when they are confronted with an unusual case where their rules of thumb don't apply, because the way these experts are trained leads to rigid black and white thinking and an inability to apply the theory to the specific case in question. Unfortunately, there is a far greater divide between academics and researchers who need to know the theoretical background of their subject, and the people working in a given field who apply that knowledge and research without necessarily knowing what is behind it.

I added a product called “Rev” to my watering jugs instead of Miracle Grow for my 2 Primo Tomato and 1 Bush Goliath Tomato. I trimmed everything half way down before watching some of these pointers on RU-vid. There are too many flowers now on all 3 plants to count and I had to redesign my system from homemade single poultry netting cages to a complete patio enclosure which I’m building myself. I have to enclose all of the plants on my tiny balcony because I have strawberry x 2 and a blueberry. The blueberry plant is incredible. And with the Rev mix it’s gone nuts! I brought it inside over the winter and it just kept going. Just a berry now and then but it produced flowers continuously. After just a month on the balcony it’s probably got 30 berries ready to eat and 50 to 70 flowers for more…..this really fun!

Roma types come in both indeterminate and determinate. I usually grow determinate Roma-types, because the idea behind growing Roma-types is to process them into tomato puree. Determinate tomatoes are much more efficient at ripening their fruits, so if canning and storage is your goal, the determinate tomatoes perform a lot better.

@2MinuteGardenTips Год назад
Knowing the type is key. When growing from seed, the seeds are *always* labeled on the packets, but if you buy transplants, it will be hit or miss. If you go to a garden center and they're homemade labels, you'll have to Google the variety and figure it out manually.
@markb8954
@markb8954 Год назад
One more point regarding determinate plants. The advantage is the plant grows to a certain height and most all the fruit will ripen at the same time. So, if you have San Marzano type of tomato you will have a bunch that all ripen together and you can make sauce! Indeterminate like Big Boy Beef Steak are indeterminate, ripen every few days or so throughout Summer, and are great to pick individually for same day slicing in salads or on burgers.

Growing Sun Gold cherry tomatoes for the first time this year and they are the largest transplants I’ve ever had after 6 weeks of growing indoors. Can’t wait to try them. I also got my first ever fig tree, a Chicago hardy, and I’m probably going to grow it in a container but was wondering if I should leave it bushy or prune it to 1 stem in the winter?

Hey, so I'm not sure where I read this or heard this, might even be from the MG himself but my figs in FL do better as a tree and my figs in NY do better as a bush. Not sure where you are but sounds like you're in the north to me since you started toms indoors. :)

I personally prefer to grow all my container fig trees as a single trunk. Concentrating the energy into a single trunk and not allowing the tree to "sucker" at the bottom accelerates the fruiting cycle in my experience. If you allow a tree to grow numerous stems, it takes longer to reach the fruiting phase, because there is so much more energy required to support all those different trunks. A neat, orderly, uniform fig tree is the most efficient.

From what I've seen, the reason why fig trees seem to perform better as a bush in the Northeast is because they die back annually. The additional "bulk" of the bush insulates the tree somewhat, whereas a single trunk that far north is essentially going to die completely every single year. If I were growing figs up north, personally, what I would do is train my tree to a single trunk, wait for the first couple frosts to send it into dormancy, but before the hard freezes start, cut the entire tree back to a single trunk at 24 inches in height. Then, build a cage around it using four posts and 36 inch chicken wire and stuff it full of straw to insulate the trunk completely. Then, uncover it in April. That way, I could maintain that single trunk and keep a neat, orderly tree. It would be some work to do, but that's how I'd handle it personally. Most won't want to put in that level of effort.

Pro tip for your videos. When showing what NOT to do in video image. Put a big X or red circle with a line across. The 45 degree cut picture is what NOT to do. Great info thanks for video.

Let’s say last year someone bought tomato plants of both types. The harvest was excellent! Then they excitedly saved seeds, but didn’t think to label which were Determinate or Indeterminate. Now the seeds are happily growing in little pots! Their own saved seeds for the first time!!! 💥🥰 Is there any other way to tell which is which? Asking for a friend. Thanks.

All I know is that my cherry tomato plant is growing like absolute crazy. Tomatoes everywhere, but currently only 2 is ripening. I did cut off 2 suckers at the bottom when it was fairly young, not sure if that was a mistake or not. It's in a pot that isn't too large, but enough to support a good 1-1½ meter plant.

I went to prune my tomatoes yesterday and I'm so glad I stopped when I realized I had a determinet tomato plant. I'm in the Northeast and it already has tomatoes turning red which I've never seen so early before.

You mentioned on the determinate tomatoes that you should remove or could remove the lower branches. Does that also include the suckers that are coming off at these lower branches below the first flower cluster?
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Год назад
If the suckers are growing out of the base of the tomato from underground, I would consider removing them. If the suckers are under the first flower cluster, but the leaves are not touching the ground, it isn't harmful to leave them. If they risk touching the ground and spreading disease, it may be worth it to you. That will be your call. If the determinate tomato is something like a Celebrity, which is a vigorous determinate that can grow 4 feet tall, I'd be more inclined to remove low suckers. If it's a short determinate like a Siletz or Margherita that may only ever reach 2 feet tall, I'd be less inclined to remove anything, since you may need them for fruiting.

Great advice. I haven't known that in the past and now have a huge indeterminate tomato plant that I have had to prune 3 times this year. It went into the ground too late last summer to produce. So I just kept it shaded all summer and covered on freezing winter nights to keep it alive. Now it's huge. I keep pruning all the extra branches and suckers to get most of the nutrients going to the little tomatoes that are growing now. Your videos are much appreciated!
@2MinuteGardenTips
@2MinuteGardenTips Год назад
Indeterminate tomatoes require constant maintenance, or they can become unmanageable. If you find them irritating, I recommend giving determinate tomatoes a try. Celebrity, Bella Rosa and Siletz are all excellent. Siletz is early and thrives in cooler weather. Celebrity and Bella Rosa are disease resistant beefsteaks.

I've definitely been doing it wrong! Are most of the bush tomatoes determinate? I've been growing Early Girl Bush variety, and it looks like I've been killing off a major portion of my potential harvest by removing those suckers. With the Early Girl Bush variety, will my tomato harvest come all at once, like most determinate tomatoes, or will I continually be able to harvest tomatoes until freezing temperatures kill off the plants?
@randydeshane9991
@randydeshane9991 Год назад
I did exactly that last year. I didn’t have tags in some of my seedlings so I treated some of them as indeterminate plants and did not get one bloom. 😢
