Skateboard tape is hella rough, so potentially, a finer grit of tape could mean less damage and longer laster sole shields. It seems like Reshoevn8r has some finer grip tape from what I've seen in picture and videos.
Are the vinyl sheets stickers, meaning is one side the adhesive side? Or are both sides smooth? I will try this method of yours. Great video btw, I learned a lot! Thanks
Hey Romsicle, thanks for providing this content. I do have a few questions. 1. Is there a particular brand of heat gun you would suggest using? I’ve seen many different ones and choosing one seems overwhelming. I did see a smaller portable one too but I’m not sure whether or not that kind needed for this. 2. I found this anti-slip made my Matie Fix on Amazon and I was wondering if that would be a better alternative to the kind of anti slip you’ve suggested. In the hopes of reducing the squish sound when walking. 3. Is there a specific vinyl size you suggest purchasing? I wasn’t sure if a 6 inch or 12 inch would be adequate. In addition, how big of a roll of vinyl should be purchase to cover 3 pairs?
1. Literally any heat gun from Amazon will do. Check the link in the description. 2. Looks like it'll reduce the squish because it's a flatter material 3. Depends on shoe size. Measure how wide your soles are, then buy it. 48 inch length is enough for one pair of shoes + 1 shoe. So if you are doing 3 pairs, you need at least two rolls if you are going to buy from the 3M product that I used. Linked in description as well.
I do like that crunchy sound on the new shields. There has to be another solution where a sole shield is 1/8" thick and is tough and flexible to last over a year. Shoe manufactures should design the sole to accommodate outer sole inserts and include a pair of these. This could be a secondary market.
Well if THIS was your first application I think it was still fabulous! My first application(s) were on my Disruptors (I looove the style) and they were a B**CH to apply to those soles but I did it anyway. I have 5 pair plus the sandals and the applications turned out crapppyyy as f! I don't care I LOVE MY SHOES!! thanks for your help 💖💖SUBSCRIBED!
Thanks for pointing the heel wear part. Did you ended up applying 2 layers of grip tape so that it can tolerate more wears? How long did you wear before having the need of resoling the shields &/or the grip tape?
Yep. I put double and made sure the heel was covered entirely. With a single layer, I think I wore it for about 30 days or so before there were signs of wear and on the verge of ripper. You'll have to replace both the clear wrap and grip tape depending on how damaged everything is.
From what I see, Dripp Grip is just a thinner version of skateboard grip tape. You still have to do the cutting yourself so kinda pointless to buy it at a more expensive price.
What’d be a good vid is if you bought the reshov sole shield and applied it on one side and apply the diy on the other and see which one is really better. If you don’t risk your ds zebras just buy a good fake
Yes, it would work, but I think it won't be as effective as with the vinyl, just purely because of how rigid the grip tape is. You'll have to closely monitor it so that dirt doesn't get into the sole.
From what I can see, the grip tape I use is much stronger than reshoevn8r's. Theirs looks pretty thin and weak. Mine are thicker and requires more effort to place firmly onto the sole.

This is to keep the soles deadstock for selling purposes. Once you wear your shoes, you're never going to be able to bring back the DS sole no matter how hard you clean them.
The moment you don’t 100 percent clean the residue off and dirt gets stuck to the residue it’s damn near impossible to get off. I’m not sure how I feel about the sole shields especially with the residue
It's possible but since it would sticking directly onto the react cushioning (in the middle), it might lose its adhesion quicker, but we won't know till someone tries!
Romsicle have you ever tried sole bright by Angela to remove the yellowness. I feel like sole shields are too much of I’m only keeping to wear personally and not sell.
