Yes, agree that stuff is for small nail holes and such. But that tub of Drydex you have is way too too old. When it’s new it’s not gummy like that, goes on pretty smooth. Maybe you can mix it with some water first like drywall compound..?

It does seem a bit dried out, you can add a splash of water to get it to the consistency you prefer. NGL I use that for hack patching lol, you can do a couple layers and it thickens/hardens well enough for small hole repair. I wouldn't go beyond 6inches... lol.

Drywall is like dentistry. Most of us have some experience at both. Most of us would do best letting the Pros handle it for the best outcome. But if you must do your own drywall, listen very carefully to the Kilted Guy.

Once that sets up a little you could probably chew on it all day That top view is very enlightening, seeing the bending of the blade. Why not try a slow motion, with a voice over telling us what you are feeling, with your hand and arm, not the other kind of feeling. Your right about learning from the pros, you and one other YTuber are the Drywall kings

That mistake is EXACTLY what I used. I had the proper knives, but that product sucks ! In my case I tried to thin it out with water, but in the end I ended up sanding it all down and using 45 min mud.

That pink stuff sucks. It’s not like you can’t look at most any joint compound and see that it’s still too wet to hit it again if needed. Hell, you’ll learn real fast if you run a coat on top of damp mud when your knife pulls chunks all over your work.

One of the guy's where I work recently mudded some drywall and my boss sent me there one day and sent me there and said you shouldn't be there more than an hr then head over to another job, well that didn't work out, I was there sanding for hrs and I also had to clean up and prime and paint two coats, it was a remodel so a wall and a bathroom, ceiling and walls, finally my boss called and asked me how the drywall went and how the other job's going, of course I told him I was still at the first job and he asked me what the problem is, I told him there was ridiculous amounts of sanding and asked him when did we start mudding with salad Tong's and he was not happy, the person who mudded it for one hates doing it, and for two doesn't know what they're doing. Absolutely ridiculous day.

Another huge mistake is I've seen guy's put spackle on top of all purpose joint compound and even worse light topping compound, the spackle doesn't sand away but the compound does and you end up with a huge repair once again😂

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY I have been feeding homeless cats and as a result I have LOTS of cats hanging around. I built a cat house with a raised foundation to keep them dry when it rains, insulated floor and walls and skylights. Electric power with small heating pads on times for warmth at night. I added a shop light controlled with a motion sensor. This cat shack is 120 sq feet x 7 high feet inside. The cat population stabilized at ~ 12 cats. I did not use drywall since it is damp outside (outside building), but I did wrap it with house wrap sheets, used OSB and put it two cat doors and a dutch door ( for the BIG cats). One of the cats must weigh 30 pounds! Big kitty.

Thanks so much I was about to try to fix a big area with that pink stuff and I worried it was too thick. I have a wall that's bloated plaster that's going to get patched with a bit of drywall and mesh tape and mud. I also have a slanted wall where the crease is wobbly and there's a saggy looking bit that's not strait that I need to smooth out. Then I have a bunch of cracks in the plaster that have been fixed but look like so one ever skim coated them to smooth the wall out. That's all in one room. I'm a first time home buyer and all if it seems daunting but your videos are helping a lot.

Thank you very much, I know guys who use spackle and I put a few drops of water in it, I personally don't like using it and if it sits to long when filling nail holes and small dings and dents it's basically like trying to sand a basketball even when pulling it tight and not leaving ridge's. Thank you very much for your professional advice.

I really appreciate what you're trying to teach us???? Most of us are guilty of one thing, we don't do it enough to get good at it, but watching you is like the old saying a picture is worth a thousand words!!! In the past I expressed my thoughts on spray texture in a can, it works, but can be a pain. So I found another type, that has a nice gun and has a pressure can that screws on the gun. Haven't use it yet and don't know if you have seen them yet, but might make a good video, the pro and cons of it. Just worked on a job painting the outside of a place and went inside to check the work that was done and OMG 😲 they had a massive beam put in and had the ceiling drywalled and every seam showed up and this is after shooting it. They added big windows and all the light showed every mistake, just like you were trying to show us in your video. Okay! Thank you, I had better stop now!!!

I buy the small size of that stuff, but only use it on nail holes in trim work and very small imperfections on drywall (picture hook holes, wall plug holes, etc). Sometimes i’m just too lazy to drag a bucket of mud out of the shop.

You could get by with those, but the more you do, the more sizes you need. I love my 8" for some things, but the 10 is probably more useful.

I was surprised to see how thick that Drydex was... I mentioned previously that one time I was about 150 miles from my shop with none of my tools and needed to repair some drapery rod related damage. The Drydex I bought at a big box store was very thin and shrank like crazy... I put on a lot of coats and still had a dimple where the screws went. Swore I'd never buy it again! In hindsight I would have been a lot happier, and would have completed the task a lot quicker, if I'd gotten some hot mud and a new knife and pan and thrown the stuff away when I was done!
