Very helpful video. As an amateur, I've only been using a 4 and 6 inch knife in my efforts to fix several sections of drywall around my place, and let's just say that I've been sanding a lot. It's good to know that I can reduce the amount of sanding by using the right tools properly.

Aloha Kilt Guy. I learn something new every time I watch one of your videos. One is never too old or experienced in their trade to learn. You are a great teacher. I believe it is important for me to understand your trade since I am a professional painter. After 40 years of painting experience, I can honestly say that I have never encountered a drywall guy like you. As you well know, one can read books, watch on line videos, go to school etc., but real life experience is what matters most. Keep up the good work.

Dear sir, I do agree with you about the use of the 6” knife. One friend of mine named Terry Pucket showed me why he always used the same side of his 6”. The pressure he applied on the right and left side of the knife constantly keeping same side of the 6” facing the wall while taping or spotting nails/screws eventually places a slight bow, almost unnoticed to the casual observer. The 6” then becomes versatile enough to feather & increase it’s diversity.

Good video. I have been in remodeling since 1978. You have good tips. I use a 6, 8 12, and a 14 inch blade. Sometimes a 3" for those small areas. Have you ever done a Monterey texture? This is a unique texture. Using a 12" blade to float your wall with fairly thick mud. Then use the edge of your hand with your pinky finger side, and tap the mud. Kinda like your sponge effect but much deeper valleys. Let it sit for a time then take a 14" blade and knock it down. When dry, apply stain to it. After the stain has dried, lightly sand it. Then apply a clear sealer to it.

I'm not sure which way is up right now. On top of everything else I found out I need $7,000 worth of dental work. Still not sure where we'll be living. Going to look at a camper today and considering living in one for a few months while we look to buy. But we have 7 cats, so need more room than average. Found ONE we liked yesterday, used it was $30,000 for a bumper pull camper. I kind of doubt I can get financed as my finances took a hit in the last couple of years, so everything is up in the air still. Glad I've been able to help you. And now, Back to packing.

Goldblatt 6" has been my corner knife for wiping down tape and running corners and angles. I started finishing in 1978 in southwest Florida, wiping down behind two banjos/pro finishers! I used the 8" knife for wiping down flats too. Running on stilts like a Wildman, wiping down behind two very fast banjo runners! Ahhh those were the days! Loved to do condos on the beach! Views were mighty fine! We sprayed textured ceilings using the ole popcorn and vermiculite too. 6 and 7 days a week daylight till dark most days. I used the hawk (we called them buzzards). Seldom using a pan. Ok....always enjoy seeing your videos. Brings back the good ole days!

I’m not a pro, not yet away. But I’ve done enough plaster work to find out I’m good at it and others have told me I’m good at it. Anyway, your opening thing about the 6 inch knife, I never noticed that they have different shapes. But this explains why I prefer working with one knife over the others. My go to knife is the one with the 90 degree shoulder, I’ve worked with it for a couple of years and never noticed until now, that it’s shaped differently from the other knifes. But now I understand why I like that knife better. Good video, great information.

Great video. Learned 30 yrs ago. If there is any significant amount. And time is an issue. Hire a person like you. Faster, better job, and ultimately cheaper in the long run. Especially if you have other trades waiting or worse, a spouse. 😨😆. It's almost worth the money just to watch how fast really good rockers can hang and tape and sand. And how little dust compared me or most novices. Because they don't pile it on. And have an eye for contour, not just smooth to the touch.. 👍👍

I thought he was the most skilled drywaller ever until I tried to hang my art work and 2 corners of the frame sat flat on the wall but diagonal while the other 2 had 1" gaps in between. I don't think we ever used that man again.

I'm a painter but finish plenty of sheet rock. Had this ole boy that worked for me for a while and I cut him loose in an office repaint, thought he could handle it. I dropped by to see how things was goin and it looked like he cut around 150 eggs in half and glued them on the wall. I kid you not. They was on their final coat of paint too. How this guy couldnt see anything wrong is beyond me. The best part is when we sanded them all down they were tiny indents and baby nail holes. Oh yeah 20 minute mud too. I still give him crap about that when I see him.

There is literally a feeling of smoothness while strafing a corner especially if you coat it properly. This feeling is for the naturally talented. For those that have acquired this skill you will see it as soon as you look down at your pass with no gaps no taps tears or bubbles no reapplying. On to the next one

Fantastic cheap tool. What material of blade do you prefer? Most of my tools are Marshalltown, and a tad rusty from washing them. Is that an issue? I'm also interested in hawk and trowel, and "buttering" for corners.

Best tip I learned about mudding has nothing to do with the tools - it’s mud management! Wipe the inside walls of the tub clean before quitting and you won’t have hard bits to stir into your mud the next day. Scraping up the excess also introduces bits into your hawk or pan. When your mud gets thick or grainy just toss it. Sidewalk chalk for the kids. Use fresh stuff from your clean tub and make your life easy.

As a DIY guy I taught myself taping, This guy knows his shit. One friendly bit of advice though, the T is silent in "often"... 😁👍

As a DIY guy and qualified linguistic teacher the "T" is not silent in Often. It is a two syllable word Of Ten....... just saying

Wish I could get tinted mud where I live. Drywall places look at me cross eyed when I ask for it.

I don’t ask for it either, I take it the way it comes to me and it’s usually yellow or grayish. Don’t know anywhere you can ask for it honestly.

I am so good at mudding dry wall, I did it with a pancake flipper/spatula. And not one bit of sanding was needed.

Yeah well once I threw my mud on the wall and smoothed it out with a rake and didn’t have to do any sanding. It didn’t even need paint. Ha ha ha, I’m better. 😂

When you're mudding a corner like a ceiling/wall corner edge is it better to put your knife into the corner and pull out and away (perpindicular)from the corner or is it better to run your knife with the corner?

Pull away from it

Kilted guy I love you, but you do know they call me the most danger man with a 4 inch taping blade in the north east coast right?🤔 Only kidding but I found I love and would rather use stiffer blades in corners makes feathering and getting rid of build up a breeze!
