The timing, the articulation , the clarity is what is really breathtaking(The speed is also absurd). Also he uses less distortion than the avergae shredder: Insane
@@sevencostanza3931 I think you're not wrong, but this is a show off moment in a concert. I'd suggest you to go and listen some of his more melodic solo's from the debut album, MR BIG. "Anything for you" is one of my preferred one, but basically just go for one of the ballads of the band
@@sevencostanza3931 uli Jon is great, gilmour too(legendary songwriter too) Jake e lee was great. Maybe you don't like PG but you gotta he has superior abilities related to timing, rhythm, dynamic control than those guys, It Is not only the speed and technique. He Is also an underrated songwriter.
I dunno. Gilbert is a total legend (3:08 - OMFG) but his recorded lead tone has often been poor (IMHO). This is one of the times I've heard him have a bit of meat to his tone and it's just SO much better. His personality always comes through in his playing too.
@@SeaOfMadness i had a Pleasure to have a sort of mini concert guitar clinic with him and 50 people in a Pub and he was 3 meters far from me... and he mesmerize me for an Hour and More with his Sound and Playing ... What a KickAss Player🤟🤟🤟
I will definitely have a go at these licks (at least some of them). While he's technically brilliant, Paul's stuff is easy to follow because he has such a clear rhythm even when unaccompanied.
Yeah, definitely isolating EVERY tiny little piece of everything he's doing... There's some other guitarists that don't seem to have that clear tone that some of the easier playing guitars might mess up! (Ibanez 😁)
Love Paul’s playing, he’s such a killer guitarist and seems like such a nice guy as well… definitely one of the best modern hard rock/metal guitarists of the last 50+ years imo
3:08 to 3:20 has been stuck in my head since I first heard this back in the early internet days. Its just amazing and gives me goosebumps every time. Wish it was its own song. Thanks for getting this footage to circle back around to me!
When I first heard the full live solo of this, it was monumental for me. Listened to it like every day for months. The precision and clarity while doing it live was epic!!
Thank you for this awesome transcription. Excellent as always. PG was a huge influence on me to improvement and practise to become better. So many signature stuff in this solo. Fabulous teacher and down to earth person. I had the opportunity to attend his masterclass at the Ibanez Summit and it was mind blowing as usual.
Yes! I musta watched this solo 50 times, just for the sheer joy of it🐬 In the first section he is pinching and semi pinching so many notes along the way -- just another example of how much understanding he has of tone and dynamics; how much awareness and control he has! And he is sending all that exuberance and joy out to a fully engaged and appreciative audience. What a stellar guitarist-performer!
20 years ago, when I was playing the guitar daily, I tried to play this solo every day, but I have never found a transcription that sounds like it. 20 years after I finally have the opportunity to play it as it is... but unfortunately I can't play anymore :(
Dude, I know what you say. As a 60 year old practicing musician and a former elite triathlete, I had a covid related stroke last year and my playing is not the same. What's your story...?
@@stevenjones6780 I am sorry to hear that Steven, hope you get well soon. Actually, I haven't had any issues, just a lack of motivation and job takes 70% of my time, I still have my guitars, but they are cover in dust by now
@@marcelloperri183 Thanks for that. Maybe you could dust them off and get what I like to call: "second time around syndrome". That's a positive thing where you pick it up again (purely on your terms of endearment), and somehow the technical side of things just sort of fills itself in almost as if you never stopped. If you were once at that level of artistry, I'd bet the art form has continued to gestate. If I can reinvent myself then you can too!!! Blessings bro...
@Steven Jones these are the comments that should get the most likes - not another of the never ending smart ass attempts at being witty. I'm older myself and I can't Believe how many people have returned to music (all of my former band mates except one). What's grabbed my attention is all the little signs that a return to traditional music where bands play their own instruments and have a singer. Singing will never die.Rap has carved itself a permanent place in the music scene but its kind of where rock was in the 2000s basically they ran out of ideas a while back and there run through the entire evolution of the genre front to back , back to front, and sideways and there isn't anywhere else for them to go. I guess we will find out .
this was quite literally the first live solo I ever watched when I started playing guitar and it was like in the infancy of RU-vid back on dial up, fuckin great video as always my man much love!!!!!
The great PG, still one of the most soulful, musical, and hilarious electric guitar artists of all time. His playing always makes me feel good and gives me something useful...
Thanks for this Levi. Not only is Paul a phenomenal player but he also comes across as a genuinely nice guy. I've been on his ArtistWorks platform for a couple of years now and he's such an inspiring player/teacher.
Might be my first ever RU-vid comment, The work you're putting in for these videos daily is insane, highlight of my day, thanks so much, deserve a million plus subs. cheers pal!
One of the best solos in general. Nasty playing and underrated rhythm. Love the shirt Levi! Opened for them and Haken in richmond Va. Kept in touch with Tom Monda for a while. Another killer player.
There needs to be a word for how I feel when smiles at the crowd hitting that first string skipped arpeggio 12-9, like schadenfreude, but the joy from someone's joy.
His vernon tapes are amazing. He recorded himself practicing and warming up before rehearsal with Racer X. It even blows him away when he listened to them again. Check it out on RU-vid
This solo blew my mind when I was first learning guitar. I remember seeing this and thinking, guitars can do that?!? I became absolutely obsessed with the guitar ever since.
Thanks dude for the tabs, i really appreciate it. I've been looking for these licks with tabs But never found, now i can practice on this video. Btw i need the next part
This has been a favorite of mine since I discovered Paul Gilbert all those years ago. If only more shredders could hit "yes" notes as hard as Paul does - what a legend.
Oh, I just saw that "ok, he has Paul there this time." But damn I did not expect this clip. I remember watching this around '00 - '01 with a friend of mine for the first time and we were just blown away. Nice to finally see what's going on in there. :D Thank you.
Saw mr big dozens of times they were super laid back first couple tours. Eric would hang out with fans before shows. And went to rush tours just to see mr big. Like Rush but Billy and Paul were on fire during those years
I remember transcribing this way back, so long ago and impressing my friends. Even though I now know that I played a good bit of it wrong. Regardless, it still influenced my playing then and now. Paul's solos are great practice etudes because they're easy to memorize, in my head, and so musical on top of being technically educational. I'm always surprised at how hard he picks. I can't get that kind of speed without picking much more lightly.
He definitely put out a lot of instructional videos, but don't forget that Paul was also an instructor at MI back in the 80s. The great thing about this solo is that you can piece together a lot of the licks from his instructional videos and come up with something really close.
Levi, you're a legend for making all these videos. You've introduced to so many awesome guitarists that I can't even begin to thank you but I will try nonetheless so THANK YOU MAN! subbed for life. Do you do these transcriptions yourself jw? Thx again man, cheers!
I've tried to played that many times before... some parts I canno play because I don't know how to really move the fingers to play some of those arpgs... ofc I'mma share it with my friends... happy new year, mate
I remember my little brother waiting for hours for this to download on KaZaa back in the day. I can't remember exactly, but I know it was after Napster, and before 9 11. He and I were in a PG vs YJM war, and I downloaded a killer YJM acoustic shred video that I haven't seen since (over 21 years). The good ole day's had their perks, and their pains (hours for a vitality bar to load to 100%).
I met Paul at a clinic. The nicest guy in the world. Very generous with his time and knowledge. His forte is string skipping arpeggios. They sound great and they sound better than sweeping. Great video thank you
One of the most killer live solos ever caught on video. It made a lot of guitarists want to either just put the guitar down or it motivated others, like myself, to practice more. But if you listen to Paul’s more recent playing with songs like “Blues For Rabbit”, he almost completely eschews his older style of what I have heard him call his “exercise playing” for much more dynamic playing. But that doesn’t mean his newer stuff is less jaw dropping. Quite the opposite! It just shows his vast knowledge of the fretboard and music in general. The even better news is, he can still bust out his older shred style at the drop of a hat!
Incredible..... Not one hiccup that I could hear , Incredible speed and clean even at high volume.. Well it's getting cold here as I watched this lnstead of going out to get some wood for the fire place I might as well throw my strat in the fire place...lol We need monster players to keep the fire alive ,if you ever get in a rut and every guitar dose ,this makes you want to woodshed.. I seen him in many videos here on the tube Such a cool guy .. From what I read he suffered hearing damage from years of loud playing .. so that tells you to protect your hearing ... Great flawless solo Love it ...
Those first two parts...the string skipping arpeggios and the quintuplet phrases...I remember hearing for the first time on his Intense Rock I VHS Man...i feel old!
Paul.. The Chuck Norris of guitar... Been one of my fav's since Racer X. The guy is just so good and he's still searching to better himself. What really caught my attention was his string skipping skills. He's the master for sure.
