Don't Move to South Carolina Without Watching THIS

On a recent springtime Sunday in historic Charleston, South Carolina, I introduced myself to Annette Howard and her family. Annette is a longtime teacher who is native to the Charleston area. She belongs to an African American subgroup called the Gullah, who have their own unique culture & Creole language that descended from enslaved West Africans in the Carolina & Georgia coastal region.
We had a candid conversation about the massive number of people relocating to this charming coastal city--particularly from northeastern states like New York and New Jersey--and how their arrival in Charleston and South Carolina in general has impacted the local economy, quality of life, and culture in positive and negative ways. Annette loves her hometown, and she and her aunt proudly describe southern hospitality and manners.
She and her husband, Fred, also address the history of racial segregation in South Carolina, specifically how African Americans, including her parents, were shortchanged adequate educations, among other injustices. Ultimately, as first members of their families to attain higher degrees, as successful career people, and as parents & grandparents of college graduates, she & Fred personify the power of intelligence, discipline, and knowledge.

Thanks for sharing. This is a wonderful interview! These people are beautiful! My late parents born in 1934 were both from South Carolina, and dad was born-raised in Charleston. They met in college at Allen University(HBCU) in Columbia, South Carolina.

My parents aren't from the South, but they were from Oklahoma and I was taught the "sir" and "ma'am" addressing people in businesses even though I was born and raised in California. When I was working in a hotel in California I was called on it more than once by people from the Northeast or Los Angeles. I had one middle aged lady from L.A. that got really indignant when I addressed her as ma'am. She said "Don't call me ma'am! Makes me feel old!". I explained it was just my upbringing as a show of respect. 😆 BTW I love talking with people out in public! It's so much fun and you learn so much, especially when you travel somewhere.

Great comment. Showing common courtesy and respect is never out of place, in my opinion, regardless of geography. You're right--it can be so educational & fun to meet people out & about, especially when traveling. Working now on bringing more of these talks to this new channel. Thanks for watching.

I agree with her ! ❤ I live in Columbia,SC, the capitol . SC has great manners, even if you just say "hey" to someone, it's almost required to be mannerly in S.C. ! I'm not from here originally, but I ❤❤❤❤ SC !! You interviewed great people ! 😍

Never been there and never gonna go, but these people are losing their right to bodily autonomy and are being told which books they can read and think OTHER people need to adapt? Shows the lack of education that is so prevalent in the southern states.
@SourWeedWillie

She literally says that the new-comers and the natives are gonna HAVE to learn to live together. All she's saying is what most natives in our state would say about the influx of people moving here. And all you're doing by calling her and us stupid, is proving why this needs to be said. The education system being fucked in our state is because of crooked politicians and rich old-money plantation families in our state refusing to listen to what the citizens of our state want. She even mentions her OWN problems with education system, AS A TEACHER. I'm shocked by the ignorance coming from you especially since you seem aware enough about the human rights issues going on here. But regardless, do better man.

Visited? Got a chip on your shoulder? They live in coastal South Carolina. It is different here. That brings millions of people to this area every year. Do not disrespect our elders! We work together to overcome a complicated 250 yo history of low,lows and high, highs. Please don’t come here. We have too many people already. We don’t have time to listen negativity. Read some more history, then come. God Bless this family.

Perhaps you didn't notice, but OTHERS are moving to HER home, not the other way around. Her opinion- very well expressed- shows common sense and common decency. Your post reflects a sad lack of both.
