I'm not saying don't move to Portugal... but, returning from Italy has brought up some thoughts about living in Portugal and how it compares to life in Italy. Both countries have their own unique appeal, whether you’re considering moving to Portugal for its laid-back vibe or moving to Italy for its rich culture and food. For anyone thinking about moving to Europe or starting expat life, the differences in lifestyle, cost of living, and daily conveniences are important to consider. Whether you're exploring expat life in Portugal or expat life in Italy, finding the right place to call home abroad involves weighing what matters most to you. In the walk-about expat podcast episode of Not Your Average Globetrotter, hosted by dual citizen expat podcaster Rafael Di Furia, we'll go over the cost of living, lifestyle differences, transportation options, and the overall experience of life abroad in these two incredible countries.

The Problem with Portugal and Spain now is "The Secret is Out" now everyone is pouring into Portugal and the easy going atmosphere, with low real estate prices has disappeared.

Unfortunately it’s a problem that’s spreading to other countries that people are “discovering”. I can’t help but wonder what things will look like in 5-10 years

@@RafaelDiFuriaI don’t know anyplace that has not been affected by “expats.” The many countries I checked a decade ago, are unaffordable now.

Wasnt it always an open secret? Im guessing social media accelerated it but globalisation made it possible for people to even consider moving to overseas locations because of migrating jobs. 25 years ago you if you wanted to - say - work in Hollywood, you had to be in Hollywood. Now you can work in half a dozen countries spread across the globe in the film (and gaming) industry. (tax incentives...aka "the race to the bottom" by many ) Im sure several other industries beneffited or suffered the same fate - better or worse - depending on what stage of life you are at and what industry you work in. (note: Saying that most of these jobs dont end up in southern but northern Europe!) Add to that the fact that a lot of the world's population has been lifted out of poverty and able to travel and consider a life outside of their relatively closed societies.

Loved the shots walking thru the mall & outside. Mix these “out of the office” walks in more.

I had my wife watch the Rovigo video with me, and all of our fond expat memories from Monza flooded back and made us smile. Could totally live there again.

Each to their own. We all have differences and ideas of what lifestyle we want. It's all about what suits your pocket and where you feel happier. Thanks Rafael

What a nice walking vid Rafael. It is a pleasure to listen to you while you walk the streets again that we all seem to wish to be walking next to you and are with this scenery that you inflict on us. Finding the path of a delightful treat in the alleyways of either Portugal or Italy is actually the delightful treat.

Having spent 3+ weeks in Italy and almost 2 months in Austria, I can very much agree that experiences can be very different. That Uber in Rome (that farms out to a Taxi company) was more expensive for me than taking an Uber in Vienna (which also farms out to Taxi companies most of the time). In fact, once you discover how to use the public transit system in Vienna, you will probably never feel the need to own a car if you live there. It's just so cheap and easy to get around and there are busses and trams and trains in a LOT of places! I learned how to get around quite well in Vienna! I also noticed in this video lots of places where you can sit down where Rafi was walking. Sadly, I did not see many places to sit in Italy outside a Piazza (I was in Rome, Florence and Venice) but there were places to sit in Vienna EVERYWHERE. Every bus stop, every park, platz and even in other places in the 1st district (Inner Staadt) area. As a person with a bad back and who needs to sit frequently because it is difficult to stand for long periods, I was VERY appreciative of that. The food prices seemed comparable to me in the higher priced tourist areas. You can get street food at almost any tram stop, usually a Kebap / Kebob, Burger or Curry Wurst. But as you might guess, I think no one does schnitzel better than the Viennese! The Apfel Strudel is to die for as well! But the people in Italy seem a little more willing to engage in small talk and are generally a little more friendly. Austrians, for the most part, tend to keep to themselves. So there was a difference I noticed there. Knowing the local language is always an advantage but I found plenty of English speakers in Vienna. Linz and Graz were more German and less English areas which is logical. Rafi, if you ever visit Vienna or Austria in general for whatever reason, I would love to hear your thoughts on it as well!

Its hard to compete with Italy - its got too much going for it - and comparing it to any other (southern) European country ends up being a bit superficial no matter how hard one tries - a lot of it is legacy - the art, the films, the design, the history, the iconic foods....these are its incredible past - but what is Italy's strength now or in the future? How is it going to change if at all? I'd love to hear an episode on that.

Nice question to have. If all goes well, I am just about a month shy of having my document portfolio together (incl Apostilles) to launch a 1948 Case for Italian citizenship. I think I would rather go to a place of my ancestors than someplace a little cheaper-unless I really felt a connection there. I need to feel a spiritual connection/welcoming or else it won’t work.

I mean, food is definitely a core issue! It's interesting that there's so much difference between Portugal and Italy on this matter, I'd have thought it would be a pretty similar experience, pasta dominance in Italy aside.

Greetings from Italy! Just a thought about the bureaucracy: Yes, it can overwhelming. That said, most of the Americans who move here are middle to upper middle class (or more). In other words, aside from the RMV (Registry of Motor Vehicles) these are folks who often have never had to depend on public services in the US. Add to that the fact that it is even rarer for citizens of any country to have had to deal with the immigration system of their home country…in other words, they have no idea how oppressive those systems can be. Not saying Italian bureaucracy isn’t a real thing - it is!! - but class and privilege are real things too which influence how people experience it. ☮️ Thanks for all your videos!

Italy is huge. Italy has many regions. Stay away from the tourist areas. Portugal is a tiny country. The 2 biggest factors for a retiree will be housing & taxes.

Raf, what “magic” did you use to erase the selfie stick?

Well I can say it had nothing to do with sacrificing a candy bar under a full moon. 😜 Jokes aside it’s a built in feature with some 360 cameras matched up with the right selfie stick.

Nice duel screen video effect. You need $45,000 in the bank to immigrate to Italy. Was a killer for mr. Happy in Braga.

@@hovigalahaidoyan4080 Hi I’m going to stick my 2 cents in here. I moved to Braga District in Feb this year. I will not discuss my personal expenses. But I will tell you I am living on my Social Security of $2100 a month. I have a 2T or 2 bedroom apartment, very modern, very nice. I shop at 2 of the best food markets here. I have fast internet, cable with 200 channels, about 30 of which are in English. mobile phone contract for two phones. I dine at the best restaurant in town, usually get a big steak dinner, with soup starter and sparkling water, cost €20, no tipping. A big thing in Portugal is pastry shops. In my town, you can not throw rock without hitting a pastry shop. I stop in a couple time a week for coffee and such, cost not more than a couple of Euro’s. My rent is not modest compared to most 1 bedrooms or singles. 100 sqm. Now I am in a special tax program where I only pay 10% a year. With that I save €250 a month for my taxes and €250 for myself. I am alone. The problem with coming here is housing in the country is tight, about 1% vacancy. Took me months to find a place and I needed a year long lease to get my visa. There you go.
