DON'T RUIN YOUR COLORS- Nisi True Color ND 1-5 Stops
Honestly before this video I wasn't aware of the severity of color shift in variable ND filters. Mainly for the fact that I knew that they all had slight color shifts but comparing them to the real life colors was major. Now using the Nisi ND-Vario 1-5 stops it shows how correct the colors are and how accurate you can get the colors that are true to life.
Nisi certainly have made a brilliant ND filter here and definitely worth considering if you're after perfect looking colors straight out of camera.
The reason I tested this against the Freewell VND is that these are my current filters of choice.

Hey Jason, thanks for the video! I'm 1 year into going full time as a videographer here in Newfoundland, Canada and your videos have helped me immensely. I've been using a cheap Variable ND filter which has been giving all my footage a bit of a green hue. This looks like it would solve my problem big time! I also love the detail of the metal screw for rotating through the stops. That would be super handy when shooting on the fly with a gimbal. Cheers!

Many variable NDs produce a polarizing effect. That appears in your first comparison. The polarizing effect darkened the sky, but the camera compensated by over-exposing and bringing up the trees. The Nisi image still adds a little yellow and green but nowhere near the Freewell tint. I have the Freewells and indeed, the tint is noticeable. You can set a custom WB to compensate, but you still lose some color definition. I still like them, though. Nice build quality. The magnetic cap on the Freewells is a great feature. Thanks for the good comparison, Jason. You're a talented creator - I see you pop up on every medium!

Informative and enjoyable, thanks for this video Jason. I would use this on reshooting my first ever hype video shoot for my local gym. I was using another branded ND filter and looking at the footage afterwards you could see that the skin tones and overall footage were way too warm - almost orange even, which was disappointing. So I promised them a reshoot. The colours from this Nisi ND seem so much truer to what is actually been shot.

Holy crap, all this time I thought it was my camera giving me that yellow shift, and all alongs it’s been these damn freewell’s! Thanks for this, I will be selling them and opting for NiSi instead.

As always, another great video. Thanks mate. Just a quick point you made about photography, there is a situation that ND’s do come in handy for photography. These days with super wide aperture lenses actually being sharp, you can shoot them at f1.4 or f1.2 if you’re lucky enough to have lenses like the new GM 50mm. So, when shooting outside in bright conditions, sometimes at wide apertures, your shutter speed can max out and the shots can become over exposed. Obviously this is not super common, but as you know, here is Aus, we have some super hot and sunny days to shoot outside in, and sometimes I find myself dropping an ND on the front, purely just to bring down the shutter speed to get the correct exposure. Love your work mate.

I can think of 2 more reasons to use ND for photography: 1. For outdoor flash photography, in order to combat sunlight, ND also helps improve flash/strobe's output a bit -- by not using "hight (shutter) speed sync" mode. 2. Where there's some creative decision requiring both wide aperture and very slow shutter speed.

So I went to the Nisi headquarters today in Santa Monica CA and we did a bunch of testing. On their website, it says “There’s no vignetting at 18mm when stacking one filter with the True Color 1-5 Stops VND. Stacking all two filters with the True Color 1-5 Stops VND will have no vignetting at 20mm. Vignetting may occur at wider focal lengths.” Well from our test today using a Sony FX3 paired with a brand new sigma 24-70 dg dn, and the 82mm Nisi Swift VND, with the 1-5 stops by itself straight to the lens has no vignetting at all at 24mm. When you stack the Nd16 (4 stops) on top of the 1-5 to make it 6-9 stops, There’s a lot of vignetting at 24mm and it doesn’t disappear till you hit 50mm. Then when you have all 3 filters stacked 1-5 plus nd16 plus black mist or IR- cut filter, it’s much worse at 24mm, vignetting also disappears at 50mm. To be honest, it could have been the perfect VND system but I don’t think it’s ready to be released in the market yet. The only useable footage from my opinion is just the 1-5 stops VND straight to the lens, if you add anything on top of it It’s unusable. There’s this ghosting effect on the corners that dulls the image and it doesn’t disappear till 50mm! That’s a lot to get rid of for them claiming that there’s no vignetting at 20mm with all 3 filters stacked. Please spread the word!

Big hello from NZ. Why I'd love a variable ND and in particular, this one: I do a lot of run & gun stuff, particularly the sports stuff I film, so it'd be super handy to have this as I don't get a lot of time to change setup during a shoot. I also shoot 8-bit still so one without a colour shift would be great! Btw I found you on Instagram and it's cool to find your YT channel as well. Love your setup and look!

Nice review ! I can however not recommend this filter, especially when using it on multiple cameras. It is impossible to align the filter! Ideally, the black dot should be centered on top for best polarization. No matter how I screw it on, it simply won't align. There is a noticeable color shift from blue to yellow when rotating the whole filter in your hand and the position of the black dot is crucial. We use a Simmod VND which has a second ring that holds the filter in it's optimal position. And it has no color shift whatsoever.

I have had the same results as you. I use this filter for wedding videography. I once filmed on an overcast day and when I rotated the filter to the opposite end, the image developed a heavy amber color tint. I just finished some tests pointing my camera at my computer monitor and as I rotate the filter, I can clearly see the picture of clouds on my monitor transition from blue to amber. I will try your recommendation to reposition the filter and see if it reduces the color shift. Thanks!

If I win, I’ll replace my ghetto DIY ND filters. I bought step up rings for my lenses and glued Nd gel cutouts on the opposite side. This way, they screw on to my lenses and stay in place. Def works, but the gels I used are designed for lights which lowers their quality. But, it saved my ass when I was broke and needed an ND real fast. Hi Jason, thanks for your comparison, I would like to go for the Nisi VND filter, but one thing that I would like to know before is; what is the outer diameter size of the filter? im planing to use this with Tiltaing Mini matt box and they state that; "Most Variable ND’s will only work on adapters 72mm and smaller. The Mini Matte Box only supports circular filters with an outer diameter of 85mm or smaller." so the question is how big is the outer diameter of Nisi VND? and to get the most out of my ND filter which is the biggest one that I should get before its diameter is too big to fit inside the mini mattbox? Thank you so much for your time.

(2 straight pieces of glass with a few polarising films, versus many highly complex lens elements with powerful fast motors and computers for running them, an iris, etc.) Even the cheapo amazon ones aren't that cheap so I've been considering this Nisi one. Big money though.

Is this different from their swift system? There are a lot of videos, but nobody is clarifying if it's the same thing or not?

Hmm. Would love to see some further tests with you showing the full range of the NISI while recording. Is it clean all the way through the 1-5 stop range? No vignetting or dreaded x-pattern? That little lever/handle on the NISI is genius. Man that would make wedding venue shooting significantly easier as light conditions change constantly.
@JasonMorrisphotocinema
@JasonMorrisphotocinema 2 года назад
yes. it is fully clean through the whole range. Most of the hard stop VND have fixed this with the hard stops. And can no vignetting on any lens unless its wider than 16mm

Hey Josh Peterman, I agree the little lever/handle on the NISI is truely genius! The only con I have is that you need to take the little lever/handle off/out when you put the Lens Cap on. Other than that really small con, I love my NiSi True Color 1-5 VND.

Can I add a 4 stop ND filter over this to get 1-9 stop ND without any adverse effects to get 1-9 stop effectively? NiSi did this with their newer swift magnetic system. But they are a bit expensive compared to screw on equivalent.

I have always wanted an ND Filter that can give me proper colours for years, never had much success , coincidentally I was just using my old Athabasca ones and I was annoyed by the colour shifts, would be great to win this :)

will have to buy a variable Nd filter for shooting in bright condition , they come in two ranges , 1-5 and 6-9 ,in very bright light 5 is not enough sometimes and if I buy 6-9 it is darker than I need from 7 onwards , so might have to go for either a bright look or a little dark footage than perfection sometimes, so several people on the net are searching for 3-7 range ... if I don't want to change my camera settings to brighten or darken , the question that just crossed my mind and I wanted you to share your views on it is ..... should I buy 1-5 and darken it later or 5-9 and brighten it later ? which is more preferable ?

Anybody know where I can buy an extra little rod that that turns the filter? It always comes loose and I am sure one day I will lose it. They should give 2 rods bc they are pretty flimsy and get loos easily.. Thanks..

Thanks for making this video man. I have both the freewell and the polar pro nd filters and frankly it makes me upset that the PP filters are so expensive and yet you get these nasty color shifts. Question for you.. Did you notice any shifts in color on wide angles lenses on the corners? :)

Jason, thanks for this very helpful review/test of the NiSi VND. I think my search ends here. At 8:58 the NiSi Mist filter is glowing your bkgd lights you point to, and I'm looking for a similar result. Is your filter the 1/8, 1/4, or 1/2 intensity NiSi Mist filter? (My guess is 1/8 ???)

i always put on ND filters when i shoot. But now my ND filter has a crack on the side. it's just little so it does not really affect the image. but this Nisi true color is just so good since it does not alter the color of the image.

I’m honestly surprised at how much you can notice the color difference. I’ve been using JJC & K&F concept filters and though I like them I really think the color of the Nisi is actually noticeably better

Same here. I first started with cheap ND and film under LED end up spending x amount of hours to color correct and end product was POS result. Then got myself a K&F Concept ND with polarizing . Love it but always seems like the person just came back from Hawaii.
