Where did the idea of sleeping in a recliner after surgery come from? I have no clue. What I do know is that sleeping in a recliner is incredibly uncomfortable and hard on your back!
The solution to staying upright without sleeping in a recliner? Check out this video to find out.

The reason I sleep in a recliner is to keep from having back pain!

I gave my recliner to the fire station after having it for a year and never using it. I really thought I wanted one my whole adult life until I bought one and sitting in it killed my lower back, I just could never get a comfortable sitting position in it. Like Dr. Hall said, they really are not good for your back. I am having rotator cuff surgery in 3 weeks and will try and sleep in my bed.

There are lay flat recliners, made for sleeping.

I am severely disabled and I can not climb stairs. I am forced to sleep in a recliner. It's not ideal but there is no alternative. I would love a bungalow but they are difficult to rent where I live.

Now I see why you made that face when I said I’d sleep in my recliner after surgery 🤣. Mine helps my back , oddly . My bed hurts my back these days . Time for a new bed . 😊

I agree. I wasn't post-op, but in 2009, I lost my job due to the rescession at age 62, and have not worked since. In the immediate aftermath of losing my job, me and my family (adult son and 12 year old granddaughter, and ex-wife (disabled), had to move in with my mother in our family home. My son and I, for three years, switch off every night, one sleeping on an old futon, and one sleeping on my late dad's recliner. My back is still messed up from that, and I got far less sleep than optimum, as well, as the recliner was located in the living room - so no privacy or quiet. I do not recommend it for sleeping.

Sleeping on beds doesn’t cut it for me. I thought sleeping on the longest couch available, leaving space above my head or below my feet for my cat, was the way to go, but I was wrong. I got a rocking chair recliner and it’s made all the difference. It’s not electric, so if the power goes out I’m not trapped.

When I was a helicopter pilot working for a medivac company, I would sleep on a recliner in our living room, uniform and boots on. When we would get an alert call the adrenalin would start flowing and would last until we got back to the base after the mission. Sometimes 2 or 3 missions. Did it for 3 years and retired at age 67. Never really had any sleep issues and would make up for it sleeping in the day. We had 7 days on duty then 7 days off duty then 7 nights of duty. My sleep pattern was out of wack from age 18 spending 14 years in the military, 17 years for American Airlines, and finally the medivac job. Now that I am retired, 7 years now my sleep pattern is terrible?

I really appreciated hearing what you say. Sleeping is not fun for me in my sleep pattern is totally destroyed. You sound like your life was interesting thanks for your duty to the people

I am not wild about it, but I have COPD and and a hiatal hernia, and have slept in an oversized recliner for several years. What is your problem with it? I cannot afford a hospital bed, the alternative.

This is specifically for cosmetic surgery patients...different strokes for different folks.
