Fun fact: The reason why dish soap works to help with soil absorption is due to what's called "saponins". This is what actually makes soap, soapy (hence the name) 😊 saponins help emulsify with the water which in turn helps penetrate the soil's cell membranes. However, if I may, I would recommend using two other options which contain saponins naturally. Aloe or Yucca extract work wonders! Both are natural wetting agents or "surfactant". These both break soil tension and help dispurse nutrients deeper into the root system.

Artichokes die back every year. They produce pups, like your banana trees, that grow up the next year. We have had the same placed artichokes for over 15 years. You can move the pups if desired.

I was just up to the Pea Patch (our community garden) and saw several artichokes looking just like hers - green, not died back. I am in 8b, Pac NW. We've had some nights below freezing but it doesn't reall feel like winter yet. Today it is 48 degrees and sunny, which is a real pleasure after a lot of rain. Lots of flourishing kale, chard, parsley, some broccoli in my plot. Garlic is pushing up about 2.5 inches through the mulch. It WILL get colder this month though. Maybe we'll get some snow this year. I just hope the plants know what to do.

Southern California here too! How often do you see yourself amending due to soil issues like this? I feel like I’m doing heavy amending 4x a year. My soil just gets so dry out here and starts to pool water even in mid season. On the bright side my last frost date here in January 25th I can get tomatoes in the ground pretty early here :) My boyfriends tomatoes are still going and giving us yummy tomatoes. We had a couple small drops under 32 and he just covered it for the night. We only usually keep one to over winter, and yes it will keep for next year. By then tho it always has a health issue so we pull it so it doesn’t spread.
@SpiceyKy

@@allie3367 I only amend my soil once per season. Start by laying cardboard. The worms LOVE 💘 it! Then add manure (only a dollar something at The Depot). Then get you some compost soil from your LOCAL NURSERY (NOT The Depot). Add some top soil as a filler. And you're good to go. The key is to build new, healthy soil on top of our crappy soil. Then let the worms do the rest.

I found several bins of soil with lids on them tucked away in the shed for 3 years that I had used on my apartment balcony before we moved into a house. I mixed it in a ratio of 2 parts bin soil to 1 part compost. I lightly watered it every other day for a week and that seemed to do the trick for me. I think the primary issue with soil hydrophobia is 2 parts. 1) The water has a tough time penetrating to the dryer parts of the soil and 2) The water runs over the soil faster than the soil can absorb it. Mixing the compost in there really helped to hold onto and redistribute the moister until the bin soil rehydrated. It also helped to rebuild the soil structure.

Loved your story abut your son getting a lizard. The first Garden I ever started was due to a lizard - we had an iguana at my old house, which ate romaine lettuce and the occasional orange or dandelion as a treat. I got so tired of buying romaine at the store that was not good quality, not fresh, and too expensive for what it was. So I looked at the old garden plot which hadn't been used in who knows how many years, and started making rows. I got romaine seed at the local dollar store, along with corn, peas, butternut squash and roma tomatoes. This turned out not only to feed my pet lizard very well, but me as well as I harvested maybe 100 lbs of tomatoes, 40 or so large squash, and countless greens everyday. This garden turned out to be my inspiration and the reason why I continue to garden today. I am hooked!

yeah, it gets so hot where I am that I have to start my tomatoes about now, pot them up to larger sizes, move them out as soon as it's warm, and then try to get a harvest BEFORE summer hits. Otherwise the heat either kills it all or I have to water 3 hours a day to keep everything alive all summer so it can produce as soon as the weather cools again. And then hope we don't have a freak early frost before I actually get a harvest. It's a lot of work but we do manage to finally get some tomatoes now that I do things this way. I also use each replanting as a chance to "deep dig" them and get a better root system so it's not a total waste of time :)

This was very helpful for me, especially 'How to Bring Back TOO DRY soil' Recently I had ordered some compost/planting soil. I was surprised with it when it was dumped in my yard. It was so dry that water was literally running off the soil like the soil was plasticky. I tried using it in a pot and water would just float on it. Then I tried mixing it with some regular soil and using it in a raised bed with better results. Will try some light soap water soon.

Awww exciting about the little beardie. They’re such cute critters, for a lizard. I used to take care of some at this store I worked at and I loved the happy way they basked and enjoyed an occasional spritz. So funny. Super cool beginner lizard. You can train them to walk on a leash! Or sit on ur shoulder! And since they don’t require as strict humidity needs as other lizards they’re easier to care for and take places or on adventures. ❤️

A lot of the microscopic life in the soil have strategies to deal with drying out. They encyst themselves and when moisture is available again magically come back to life. In addition, some of the larger life can do the same thing.

Great advice Jess. I think we’re all wanting to get out in the garden now. But you’re right, there’s plenty to do in order to prepare those garden beds for the season. I actually throw banana peels in my garden all the time this time of year.

Thank you! This is only my second year with the garden, and last year I didn’t get stuff into the ground until July 4th (late start plus high altitude), but still did okay in spite of it. I’m one of those that wants to start right now 🤣 But I’ve learned so much just from this video to start preparing for this year. I’m doubling my garden this year! Just a short squirt dish soap is all it takes to break the surface tension on the soil to encourage it to absorb the water. Think of the summer and a very dry spot of dirt, and if you put a drop or two of water on the top, it just lays there in a puddle. Add a touch of soap to a dropper of water and do it again and see the difference. It is also the same principle as the little bug that can skate over the surface of a pond. Their feet simply don't break the surface tension of the surface of the water.

Sunflowers can feed animals from top to bottom. Rabbits will eat the whole flower head, chickens love the seeds, and the stems are GREAT mulch once dried. Also, I’ve heard that some people eat roasted sunflower blossoms. I think the zinnia blossoms are not only attractive to pollinators but also edible. Good in salads. Calendulas and nasturtiums also.

If you watch Baker Creek’s videos on seed starting, they use dish soap in their seed starting mix, to help the soil to retain moisture and break surface tension.

peat moss is a common addition to potting soil and that's the reason it gets hydrophobic once dried out - peat moss is very difficult to re-wet.

Jess you are such a blessing and inspiration. I grew up on a large farm, did the farm thing but my dad didn't want us to be farmers. I went to college. Always had a small garden, the past 2 years we have been growing microgreens for Market and private selling. Covid slowed everything down. I ordered our seeds to grow some starters to sell as well as a few veggies and flowers at market. I appreciate your sharing it's helped so much to encourage me to continue to grow. Congratulations on your book, the podcast and the class. As a Reiki Master I so get the excitement of giving to others and to teach!

Every year I've had the challenge of waiting. In GA, I could plant snap peas for n early January in the polytunnel in buckets, then set them outside in March. Since we've moved to Scotland we can't get stuff even out in a polytunnel until May because night temps are just too cold. I plant super hot peppers in the house in January because some of them take up to 6 weeks to germinate. Tomatoes I start in mid Feb. Things like cucumbers and squash I will plant in mid to late March. We have some real challenges. Pumpkins and corn are no go. Butternut squash does well. But plant it inside early. We also have space challenges so finding productive varieties is really important.
