IF your tomato seedlings get too leggy, plant them deeper when you repot them into larger containers, and add soil up to the first set of leaves. All those hairs on the stems of the plants are actually root hairs, and when you cover them with soil, they will develop a healthier root system, making them much stronger plants, much more stabilized, as you have a stronger root ball from which they can pull their nutrients from the soil. So, that'll eliminate the leggy issue, making it beneficial to have them initially leggy.

@@SeniorLyf I recommend Nigerian Dwarf goats. Wonderful milk, perfect for cheese due to the high fat content and they are a joy to be around.

I started using a wax pencil to write on my markers ... It lasts much longer that way than a sharpie.

The British garden RU-vidrs call this step "pricking out" the seedlings. I did it today with some parsley, cilantro, marigolds, fennel. Did brassicas last weekend. The fennel seedings were weak and didn't take it well, I lost a few and will need to plant more. But overall so far so good. Thank you for showing us that tomato seedlings are strong enough for this treatment.

I use that same method for my pepper plants. I re-pot them almost to their first leaves. They really seem to like it, and turn out to be strong healthy transplants.

Gosh - I have not done that. I need to when transplanting. I only have them in pots on a window at work. My tomatoes are super leggy (2 plus feet) but I still have tomatoes growing so I do not want to trim them back. Should I?

Allot of gardeners cut them back to a point about an inch above the first true leaves. Ir will send 2 new branches.

I laughed so hard after the start of this video as I've just spent the latter part of the afternoon and most evening separating out and "repotting/transplanting" my tomatoe seedlings. I had 3 little "trays" of tomatoes and now have almost 90 seedlings. Because I'm in Northern Ontario Canada I will end up "repotting" them once more before they go into my garden or are given to family/friends or sold. Our last frost date is the end of May so I like to make sure that each "repotting" they are deeper and have really strong roots so they don't have to worry about setting down a more extensive root system when they finally make it to our gardens here. I also like to "repot" them in deep paper pots that I make using a wine bottle, so they are pretty big and the roots are nice and deep by June 1st. when most people put them in their gardens.

A couple decades ago (I feel old. lol), our local Southern states used to sell bundles of 50 plants wrapped in damp newspapers - tomatoes, cabbage, broccoli, onions or peppers. I really miss that!

I do love tomatoes. I’ve broken the top off a leggy tomato start on way home from the garden centre before now, and ended up with the original plant growing back from the roots, plus the top of the plant that broke off grew roots after I set it in soil. So grateful I’d seen your videos or I’d have probably thought it was hopeless and binned it.

Last autumn I had a broccoli seedling break off above the roots while carrying the pots to the garden to plant them. I thought I'd bung it in the garden anyway to see if it grew, and to my shock it did! Then I had one break in the wind after planting so I replanted it and that grew too! You never know unless you try.

@@VallanaTrue Me too, but curiosity made me try anyway. I think the weather was cool enough and there was good compost and moisture in the ground, plus it was still reasonably small.

@@VallanaTrue Some plants are fussier than others. And it depends on what stage the plant is at too. If it’s a more established plant with lots of leaves etc then you have more chance of it working than if you beheaded a week old seedling.

I watched another gent who was using his outdoor green house when it was during his frost season. What he did was use a fish tank heater and a metal trash can. the water from FTH heats up the metal trash can so it keeps it a bit warmer and only cost 17 cents to run it at night!

I've taken to starting almost everything this way. We have very little room inside to start seeds right now, so "mass seeding" is the way to go for us. Of course, I have the luxury of 6 helpers to separate seedlings, pot-up, etc throughout the spring. One thing I do in the course of things is rest the seedlings in a shallow bowl of superthrive water before putting them in their new cups. This makes a huge difference in their strength going forward and almost completely eliminates transplant shock.

I only recently discovered your work and channel, it's already been so helpful though! This is how I usually sow my herbs, it's good to know other veg/plants that can handle this technique. Also, I just think it's really cute to see all the seedlings started this way huddled together in a little group hug.

I seperate seedlings by putting them into a bowl of water. The dirt sinks to the bottom and the roots stay in tact, and you can seperate them easy! Maybe a tip for you too. Greetz from Holland, Hester

For anyone with short fingers that can't poke a hole to the bottom of the pot, use a pencil or chop stick to make the job quicker and easier. ☮️💖🙏

Learned the hard way that cucs, zuchinni, and melons don't like being moved 😫 Killed them all and had to late start direct sow, but we got an amazing harvest from all of them, so that learning experience was still extremely beneficial. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you - sure saves some starter room. I don't have even one window with sunlight coming in. By design! I thought my new house should have overhang enough to block the Florida sun and save on A/C cost BUT failed to consider I may want to garden. So one table for starting seeds outside and taking them in and out each day for cold protection. Very helpful tips!

I remember last year forecast on almanac was way off. In Jersey our last frost was actually May 16th. Had 70 plants waiting to go outside it was nuts lol

@@DianeCee0 Oh no! Hey neighbor! My reiki teacher is out there. 20 yrs ago. I really don't know what to do this year 🤦‍♀️ As you know we just had 70 degrees with snow on the ground. My parsley, rosemary, carrots and self heal made it through. Still hanging on. I bought ceasar seed packet last year..they turned out to be carrots 🤯🤔 Wishing we have a better grow season 🙏

I've never tried doing my tomatoes like this. I'm a little clumsy and feel like I'd stress the plants during transplant. I start all mine in 72 trays and then transplant to 18's. After that we transplant to grow bags and do it hydroponics.

I'm still going to do it the other way. But this gave me the idea to separate plants if I didn't get 100% germination in each cell. Instead of just pinching them all, separate and replant in the pots with no germination. Thanks for sharing!!😘

I saw you do this a year or two ago, and it has worked really well for me so far this year. My mistake was starting them too early, though... I’ve got 8-10” tomatoes that probably shouldn’t be planted out in the tunnel, yet, but might just go ahead and be ready to cover them in case of a cold snap. 😇

I love the way you start your seeds. I’m going to try that this year. I like to recycle things that I may find useful. Example: plastic containers that hold strawberries at the grocery. They have holes in the bottom for drainage and a hinged lid. I thing these containers are perfect for this type of seed starting.

Thanks Jess, this is the first year I’ve had a greenhouse and I could have popped a champagne bottle when the first seedlings appeared. This has helped me very much and I will now put your method into practise with my new seeds. Also I realise now to buy the square pots and not the round ones! . Thanks very much.

This came at the right time for me Jess. My first time growing tomatoes from seeds and they look really good. They have their first set of leaves and I was hoping to see a video on up potting them. Thank you. Hope I get lots of tomatoes. Lol. Have a great day.
