Echoing what a lot of people are saying, comb coils are great for people with tighter curls, and for people who want to have the whole process of locking their hair. It takes A LOT of patience, something we don’t really have anymore. Comb coils vary person to person, personally I started my locs with comb coils in July of 2021, my hair started budding in early September, and I’d say my hair was fully mature at around the 7 month mark. There’s no hard answer for when your hair will do its thing, it depends on your head, hair type, and your genes. Crochet hooking is great for instant locs, locking up hair with looser hair texture, and maintaining locs. It’s also a great way to start locs. Choosing the right way to start locs is all about knowing your hair, and doing the research. Yes, comb coils are the “default” way of starting locs, so if you want instant locs tell the Loctician before you even set up the appointment. Also ASK QUESTIONS! There’s no shame in asking your Loctician questions. A fair amount of my loc knowledge comes from my Loctician. I don’t really like this fearmongering of comb coils just to push people into clicking your affiliate link, GreatLocs. You’re better than that.

@pjz96
@pjz96 2 года назад
Hmmm. I disagree with your take on the comb coils. They can lock pretty quickly (3 months) depending on the texture. I know you’re big on crocheting/your crochet hook, but that’s really a necessity for looser hair textures that constantly unravel. And the amount of “product” needed to start isn’t always bad. My loctician used homemade flaxseed + essential oils to start my coils and uses it on my retwists and my hair is already locking two months in. I hope you’re not saying this to push your crotchet hook product…

I started my locs with coils, no products, only water and oil. My hair ended up locing within 3 months and 2 retwists. You just have to be consistent with using purified water mist and oil to seal. That worked for me personally. Crochet and interlocking put a lot of strain on the roots and can cause thinning over time and also rip your hair. The only downfall with retwisting is that if you work out or get sweaty often it’s easy for it to get unraveled. Something to think about, hope this helps someone!

It’s fine if you’re not into the spiritual, but if there’s not another reason to get them done I wouldn’t do it. If it’s mainly to address the plait issue you could try two strand twists and see if you like those. If you’ve had them before they sit the same as locks do, you just get to unravel them if you don’t want to wear them anymore. You can also just keep them in and start your loc journey that way. I’d give it a try before locs because the route to remove them is to cut your hair or comb them out (which can take a hot second).

There are pros and cons to both, advantage of the comb method is that you can take it out n keep ur length if you just wanted to experiment with locs. Whereas the hook method locks the root of the hair meaning that you have to cut all ur hair off and start again if you change your mind. It doesn't take a whole year to loc, it will take some time, but not a year and you don't have to keep going to have it re-twisted if you're careful not to disturb the coils as they develop into locs. I started my locs this way, the stylist who did them did instruct me on how to care for them, I didn't have to use a whole lot of product, and I am still wearing the same locs that started out as coils 5- years later. The truth is there are a number of ways to start your locs, no one way predominates the other methods. It really boils down to preference and what you think works best for you. The good thing about the coil method is that you have time to change your mind if in the process you decide that you don't want them anymore. I enjoyed my coils, they have their own unique style that is just as beautiful, so...

This isn’t necessarily true for people with tighter type 4 curls. Type 4 hair typically locs up fairly quickly, even in comb coils. This is more true for looser curls. For both looser and tighter curls, If you want instant locs then the crochet method or the interlock method is definitely the way to go however if you’re not in a rush and you have type 3-4 hair, you can definitely get away with other locking methods like comb coils

I had my dreads for about 3 months and then combed them out so I could restart. I didn't like the sectioning. My hair is slightly damaged but I'm tired of having lose hair. Would it be bad to start back combing now?

I started my locs with comb coils on July, 3 2021. It does not take upwards of a year for the hair to start locking up because it hasn’t been a year and my hair is fully locked up.

I started my locs with comb coils but I braided over them for a total of a year (not the same set of braids for all that time obv). That helped me avoid the issues while the hair was locking. Somehow I recall When I took out the last set of braids after a year my locs were formed and I was good to go!

Don’t use the term “dreadlocks” it’s derogatory. Second- if you have coarser texture hair, you do not need products or tools- just a tight curl pattern. Note: if you are a mixed person with a loose curl pattern or non-black with straight hair, this video is for you. Also if you use a crochet hook, it looks ratty as opposed to twisted- which is the look that straight haired people tend to go for.

So i went this route and it was fine. I just went to get my hair done every 3 weeks for a wash and retwist. Then after that i was good. Now i am on an every 8-12 week retwist. I also started on 5 years of natural hair. If i had to do it all over again i would do 2 strand twists to start mine.

2 strand twist to me is the best method to start Locs. I started with comb coils but had to restart 6 Locs due to colour damage which was caused by breakage. My 2 strand twists Locs looks better and stayed together much easier than my comb coils. 😉

I started my locs myself with coils (I have 3C hair). It’s locd within a month or two. My texture can’t hold two strand twists, they always unravel. When I did my coils, the only product I used was oil. My 3C hair was so curly, I didn’t need any gels, soufflés or butters.

Super informative video💯🎯💯 I'm glad you said this bcuz all I notice people automatically go to coils; I did one on myself and it kept coming out. Smh I couldn't deal twisting over and over just to make sure it stayed. 😮‍💨 I chose two strand twists and my hair is intact🙌🏾

Gel is unnecessary. The hair can start locking in 2-3 weeks without all the gel and product. I use castor oil with some water for retwist and it gives a hold as strong as gel because of the castor oil's thickness. I would say if someone wants to go for a gel like consistency, aloe vera plant, tuna plant or maybe even okra gel will do. You can even mix a little oil with aloe vera and it does the job.

I totally enjoyed starting my loc’s with the instant loc method. I created my own loc’s 1/8 diameter waist length crochet onto my 3” of loose natural hair and interlocked the new growth with a 2 point rotation. I have had none of the issues common to other starting methods. The day I finished the installation I washed and oiled my mature looking loc’s and can wash them daily if I choose. I’m not trying to have a spiritual experience with my hair only a great easy way to proudly wear my natural hair with pride. Because I instant locked my hair I can cut my loc’s without worrying that they would unravel while maintaining a very neat and well maintained style. I like to take control and find the best way to do everything using the best techniques and innovations possible. Why walk if you can drive or drive if you can take a plane!

I guess it really depends on how well a person manages there hair as well because I took this same route when I started my dreads and they were completely loc'd within 3 weeks. I honestly thought it would have taken longer because I even heard it takes about 4 to 6 months. Imagine my surprise seeing that. But then again my wife did add two other products to the gel as well so maybe that speeded up the lock process or something. Ima have to ask my wife what the products were called and then I'll post on here. Hope it works for everyone else like it did me.

I did it this way for starting and after the first month went in with the crotchet. It’s a good way if one ever intents to comb out the hair but otherwise I find the gel contributes to buildup.

My hair is different. I’ve started locs twice. I combed them out the first time after two years. Both times my locs were locd by the first retwist a month later. They weren’t mature yet but we’re locd. By month 4 my buds were gone and the loc was fully formed.

But here's how, I took down my singles one day but I did two strand twist on each braid I took out did not wash but rinsed my hair and let it air dry left it alone for a few days, went swimming, washed it, shea butter, scarf and by the next week I had locks yes a few only locked at the bottom but I just got a retwist and had my sis interlock them
