John, I would love you to check out a beautiful moment I spotted in this post, at 43.38 a young lad in blue jacket shows a cheering fist next to the Trooper on Shearer, the Trooper then winks to the lad in a respectful acknowledgment as he strolls away, wow, such an honour to behold! Thank you for being right there to capture that unexpected moment. ❤

At 43:38 I watched and re wound at least 6 times, whilst zooming in. I saw the raising of the fist, as if to cheer, but alas I saw no winking or any acknowledgement from the trooper, for that matter. Sorry 🤷‍♀️ P.S. To highlight and make a timestamp clickable, you need to type it out with the double ‘period’ or ‘full stop’. Using just one won’t work. 😊 I hope this helps.

Their horses are sourced from farms that breed FOR HCav(there’s always a market for good looking, well bred horses for showing/eventing etc for those not taken by them) Irish draught horses can span a large variety of conformations from very heavy, to quite refined….add in TB and you get a mix that can produce anything from a “shirealike” to a TB type and everything between.

I have never seen so many people. Plus our police and many of them are doing crowd control what a waste of their job. To my mind as a lover of horses the no touch approach of the English visitors is correct. How can anyone support the anxiety , fear and sadness this brings to these beautiful majestic horses, as many have said this isn't Disneyland so they should be left well alone. Watching these lovely, trusting creatures suffer at he hands of these ignorant people sickens me and I am sure many others who work with and love these animals feel the same. I am sure the troopers who live and work with these horses do not like it either, but the powers that be in their greed for money make a mockery of these brave men, women and horses. It deeply pleases me when people keep away from these horses, and I always hope that the horses don't or shouldn't need to resort to defending themselves by biting, pushing and pulling people to the ground. These guards have been hogtied and cannot react so they don't upset the tourists, I would rather the tourist were upset than put the horses and guards through this farce everyday. I can no longer watch this really sad thing happening everyday rain or shine. I will be writing a letter to the powers that be to try and knock some sense into them. This is the worst animal abuse I have ever witnessed, I will miss seeing the beautiful Radan, Ormonde, Tipper, and many more but my conscience will not let me watch it any longer, I will have to do something about it.😪😡

@paulinemegson8519
@paulinemegson8519 7 месяцев назад
I get what you’re feeling….however I beg to differ. Yes the tourists can be a bit much…..but remember, the horse is only there for 1 hour…….even the longest duty a horse will do here is 3 hours each hour separated by an hours break in the stables….and usually they don’t even do that long. The main issue is that these tourists can’t read horse body language. 90% of the issues would be addressed if the tourists just got thru their skulls that if a horse avoids your hand with pinned ears that it’s best to leave them alone….yes take your pictures, but stay out of the horses space. Conversely there are horses like “Tipper” who genuinely love playing with people, and he’s not the only one. To take away the pleasure these horses get from interacting with the public is rather shortsighted I feel. And then there’s the people……much tho I cringe regularly at people interacting with the horses, not everyone has had the privilege of working with horses, and I have to remind myself of this…..MOST of the clueless tourists are just that….clueless. They’re not, (apart from a very small minority) being malicious or have any intent to harm…….and just to see the look on their faces as they actually touch an animal that they have probably never even SEEN in real life before……that joy is something I think us “horsey people” forget about sometimes. Now, I’m not saying that comes before the horses comfort at all…..but here at HorseGuards, the horses are #1, and even if they do have to endure a bit of discomfort, it’s minimised as much as possible. They even get regular “decompression time” out at grass at the facility at Melton. I just don’t think the “BAN IT” attitude really works. Anyway, that’s my 10c worth.

The worst animal abuse you've ever seen ? WOW...... There have been many pictures of starved, abused horses 🐎, also cats and dogs. These horses are well taken care of, have plenty of food and vet care; stand in one place for an hour, maybe twice a day. Some of them seem to like people, a interact. Some obviously do not. Horses have different Temperament ( spelling ? ) just as we do and want their space and to be left alone . I would wish that the ' abuse ' they suffer would be the WORST anything has to suffer.. ....

@shirleyjenkins11
@shirleyjenkins11 7 месяцев назад
The term 'Cavalry Blacks' refers to black horses that meet specific height and conformation requirements, rather than a distinct breed. They are often Irish Draughts or Irish Draught Crosses as they have a balance of strength, athleticism, and temperament suited to ceremonial roles. Having horses all the same colour is better aesthetically like a uniform.

Tourists should not be allowed to touch the horses at all. There should be someone to stand near each horse to make sure that if a tourist wants a picture of themselves with the horse, that they have to stand close enough for the pic, but not close enough to touch the animal. I understand PR and all, but these horses and guards are WORKING. I think it's cruel to the horses to allow so many people to be running up to them for a picture.

All the horses names are stamped on tha small piece of leather with two rings the ( jowl piece) under there head on the bridle i appreciate it can be hard to read it where it is but just a little bit of info

Where is the jowl piece? Is it at the front or back of the horse head? Or at the side? Sorry I don't know much about the bridle pieces. Thank you
@sharono4245
@sharono4245 7 месяцев назад
At first I thought you meant the throat latch piece on the bridle, but I think I see what you’re talking about now, it’s actually the piece under the jaw with a ring on each end on the halter - the silver link chain attaches to it. I guess since they are cavalry horses, they have that odd sort of half-halter they wear, in addition to a full bridle, and the silver chain is the tether chain that they can clip onto a tether line to tie them up. I think I can see letters on that piece, but the resolution isn’t good enough for me to see the name. That’s very interesting though, maybe John can zoom in on it and read it, thanks for the info!

@@sharono4245 yes the chain is called a bright chain primary use to guard against sword slice to throat and reins in battle but also as a tether
@sharono4245
@sharono4245 7 месяцев назад
@@maryholder3795 I think he’s talking about the small bit of leather that is underneath the horse’s head, kind of running parallel to the nose but it’s on the under side of the head. On one side, it looks like it’s attached with a silver ring to the throat latch part of the bridle, which is the piece that runs under the throat from one side to the other, and it looks like on the other side it attaches with a silver ring to the noseband of the cavalry halter. The silver link chain attaches to the silver ring that is closest to the nose. That’s probably as clear as mud, I hope that makes at least a bit of sense!

That bridle/halter combination is a new one for me, I’ve never seen it before, but apparently it’s a cavalry horse type of thing. I can understand why it is the way it is, though, because at the end of the day, you really wouldn’t want to take off the horse’s bridle and then fiddle around with putting a halter on before attaching them to the tether line. It’s very interesting! I’ve ridden with Western bridles and English bridles and I’ve never seen anything like that bridle/halter combination!

I love your video's I miss being in the Uk. except for all the entitled people who PROTEST everything, makes me crazy, to think that they come to England and do all the protesting in front of Horse Guards, scare the Horses. for something they would never be able to do in their own countries. and then they just have to learn. DONT TOUCH THE HORSES, ITS THEIR JOBS TO BE THERE.. But anyway, thankyou for your video's.

Does anyone know, are the swords sharpened or strictly ceremonial? I would think that sharpened swords would cut their cloaks.
@paulinemegson8519
@paulinemegson8519 7 месяцев назад
I know everyone keeps saying they’re sharp and I’ll be honest, I’ve never handled one of these particular pieces so I could well be wrong, but I HAVE handled other ceremonial/parade swords, and they DO have an edge but it’s not sharpened or honed to cut. Logically I can’t imagine given how they’re used, that they’d be honed to a cutting edge…..way too much scope for accidents.(and I’m SURE the troopers 🫣🙄🤣being mostly young men in their 20s are FAR too responsible and mature😂 to fool around and play fight each other with their swords🫣😂…..and neither I, in my 20s, nor any other staff NEVER, EVER rode the mail chutes from the top to the bottom in the old NZ Post building in Auckland where I worked for years because it was “strictly verboten” 🤣🤣😇)Yes you CAN cut/stab yourself on a parade sword, but you’d have to work at it. Also unlikely to cut the cloak even were it a sharp sword, as it’s the spine against the shoulder and in pretty sure those are single edged blades as they’re made to cavalry sword patterns from the same period as the uniforms. That means they’re slashing weapons, for use from horseback, and only require a sharpened leading edge.

@@paulinemegson8519 thanks for the information on swords the troopers carry. Just out of curiosity how tall was the building where you and other staff NEVER slid down the chutes for the postal letters ????
@paulinemegson8519
@paulinemegson8519 7 месяцев назад
It was built in the early 1900s I think, in a Victorian style with a dome of stained glass on the main floor and a huge set of stairs and a portico in front….it was a gorgeous building but the inside had been chopped and changed about over the years so “floors” as such were different depending on where you were in the building lol. The longest chute spanned 3 floors tho…..they were old fashioned floors tho with extremely high ceilings….about 10-12 feet offhand I believe. The chutes were spiral shaped, kinda like an English fairground “helter skelter” except that other than the openings on each floor it was completely enclosed, and it carried mail bags from floor to floor. It actually WAS a bit dangerous cos you had to remember to keep your head down or you’d hit the bracing about halfway down, and that could be nasty. But when you’re 20 you’re indestructible, right? 😂

Their barracks is at Hyde Park Knightsbridge where they exercise every day , they regularly go out to grass for a break in Melton Mowbray and have holidays at Holkham on the beach in summer when The Kings Troop Royal Horse Artillery take over the duty at Horse Guards .
