DON'T TURN YOUR SHOULDERS in the Golf Swing?! (The Shocking Truth)

How do the shoulders really work in the golf swing? "Don't Turn Your Shoulders in the Golf Swing" is common golf swing advice on RU-vid, but you need to know that the shoulder turn is an important part of the golf swing and it gets your golf swing working correctly. When you learn how to turn your shoulders like in this golf tip, you will see your ball striking improve tremendously.
Anatomically speaking the shoulders don’t “turn” - “turn” is just a term golf instructors use to explain how the shoulders work because it’s easier for golfers to understand. One of the main functions of the shoulders is to “turn”. Turning creates power and gives you more distance with less effort.
Another function that helps the shoulders move correctly is “tilt”. You need to tilt in the golf swing if you want to hit the ball solidly. A swing without tilt would be a baseball player - you’d never be able to hit the ball off the ground!
If we were to imagine that you “don’t turn your shoulders” in the golf swing, we would have to eliminate a critical piece necessary to play great golf. Let’s say I remove the “turn”…now what am I left with to swing? If you remove the “turn” you would only be left with “tilt” - and tilt alone cannot make a powerful and repeatable golf swing.
Sure, tilt is important, but it is not everything…the golf swing is made of parts that when put together create the whole. This is why you can’t do ALL TURN and NO TILT, or ALL TILT and NO TURN. You need to combine TURN and TILT to play the best golf of your life.
In this video you’ll see why you need to turn your shoulders in the golf swing, and how NOT turning them can be very damaging to your golf game.

Whether you are a seasoned golfing veteran looking for a quick swing tune-up after an on-course emergency, or a beginner just looking to get the most out of your golfing experience, I am here to help you achieve your golfing goals.
My mission as your swing doctor is simple, to help you maximize your enjoyment in game of golf. Because, let’s face it, golf is a hard game.
My philosophy is wholly based on the student having a fun, meaningful experience in a frustrating and complicated game where potential lifelong golfers either quit because it is too difficult or that they experience some form of swing-related pain or discomfort. I mitigate these problems by focusing entirely on the student’s needs and goals while teaching a golf swing method that ultimately takes stress off of the common pain areas of the swing.

Tom: I'm a right handed golfer. When I turn my shoulders, should my left shoulder be under my chin or past my chin at the top of my backswing? BTW, since I started tilting, I can hit my driver with a natural draw as long as I keep my head centered. Thanks for the tips.

Stack and Tilt is power. I went in for a free driver fitting at a Golf Galaxy last Saturday since they had a promotion. When I started hitting golf balls in Tracman the fitter was amazed that my consistent clubhead speed was 105 MPH. He told me that he had many people in recently for a fitting, and people would try to kill the ball and send the ball severely to the right. He asked me how I got that speed so consistently. I told him about Stack and Tilt and Tom Saguto. He said he knew of you, Tom since other people have mentioned you. I told him STACK AND TILT IS POWER! People need to stop being afraid of Stack and Tilt and try it and see if it works for them. I upgraded to a Titleist TSR3 10-degree loft with a stiff flex shaft. Can't wait to take it out this season.

That is awesome!! Thanks for singing the S&T power praises, and congrats on your new driver!! While it's unfortunate that some folks have been deterred by calumnies offered by a misguided few, the proof is in the pudding - or, I suppose, in the consistently crispy ball striking - and we are garnering more converts to the established truths of S&T with each passing day. Great job!! Tom

Great Video!! For many years, I was guilty of taking a big turn, without sufficient tilt. Sometimes my head would move laterally, just enough, to put those lovely sod head covers on my irons 😂 Staying still is definitely a skill, as I have been watching your videos for the last several years. Now my focus is my left shoulder on the backswing and my right shoulder in the downswing (tilt), without picking my arms up (a good tilt takes care of that). My swing plane has greatly improved, leading to crisp ball striking, and there have been many rounds in the 70's because of it. I like the feel of staying stacked over the ball, as it's powerful, and I practice these fundamentals constantly. Tom.....another fantastic video that is all you need to play great golf!!!

Thanks for making this video. Shoulder turn might be the single most crucial part of the swing. In fact, people should be taught to first make a full shoulder turn, then worry about where the arms/hands go. So many people focus on the hands and arms, but don't even think about the shoulder turn. Jack Nicklaus said his famous teacher, Jack Grout, made sure Jack "completed the backswing", which essentially means "make a full shoulder turn" (on full shots, of course).
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
Well said! I can't understand why amateur golfers would be told not to turn their shoulders when inadequate shoulder is one of the primary swing-wrecking issues plaguing amateur golfers. The setup and motions of this swing system promote a full and unrestricted turn, and it's a primary reason why so many folks are now hitting it longer and straighter than ever - including countless senior golfers who thought they were no longer capable of making a full turn! Thanks for your comment and your continued support!! Tom

True enough Tom. The shoulders will follow the arms. To be fair, I’ve been turning too far, causing me to look like I’m standing up out of my swing path. Thanks for talking about too much of a turn, that’s my problem, and it makes me look like I’m standing up out of my path. Thanks, Joe.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
I'm glad this lesson resonated well with you, Joe. The key here is get to - but not go beyond - your body's natural stopping point in the backswing where the tilting, turning, and extending motions are complete, the lead arm has crossed the chest 45 degrees, and the wrists are properly set (preferably with a flat or slightly bowed lead wrist). This is the point where if we were to try to go any further any or all of the following will occur: 1) the lead arm will bend and/or lift 2) the wrists will break down 3) the lead knee will kick inward towards the trail side 4) the lead shoulder will level out and lose its orientation towards the ball 5) weight will shift into the trail side and bring the low point back with it, resulting in inconsistent contact and unpredictable ball flight. 6) you'll "chicken wing" and/or flip through impact 7) pain, discomfort, and/or possible injury We don't need to try to get to "parallel" with this swing, and fighting your body in an attempt to do so will result in some combination of the above issues. If you execute this swing properly you will have created width and plenty of distance for that club to travel by taking it in deep, and that will enable you to harness the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". Tom PS: Have you perhaps given any thought to the comprehensive, structured, sequential learning platform of my online school? That's where - among many other courses and lessons covering various aspects of the game - you will find very detailed instruction and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step from setup to finish. Mindy Blake wrote a book called golf swing of the future in the 70's.Ok I know it's an old book.But he had some great credentials.He highlighted that the right elbow should be in front of the right hip during the whole of the golf swing and that the arms should only be around 14 degrees inside the target line at the top.He was of the view that too much hip turn was not good,and promoted only about a 10 to 12 degree hip turn,although he said it felt like they didn't move at all.He also said there was no weight shift.All in all it seems to me that this swing can easily be tuned to keeping the weight forward at set up.But it would also involve less swinging of the arms around the body.The swing would be a essentially stak and tilt but creating a more natural feeling of an up and down swing rather than the traditional arms right across the body in the traditional ST which you advocate so very well.I am wondering if for any number of reasons this was an approach you felt was justified.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
Hi Mark, I would agree with the trail elbow component and not shifting weight to the trail side. Beyond that, from personal experience I can tell you that I previously had a swing that was based on restricting the hips and lifting the arms. Aside from being inconsistent at best, it was causing me lower back pain at a young age. If interested, here is the story of my "conversion" from that "resist, shift, & lift" method to Stack and Tilt: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PM8lNNrMPEk.html This body-friendly, powerful, consistent, low-maintenance S&T swing system is rooted in physics, geometry, and human physiology, and it is modeled on empirical observations of the game's most prolific ball strikers. As such it does not discriminate by age or ability - from kids to seniors and everyone in between, inclusive of the best players in the world. Watch any Tour event on TV and you'll see a significant number of players executing these motions, a fact corroborated by just how many of them have a very centered swing with the lead knee flexing and the trail leg straightening during the backswing, their lead arms on or very close to their tilted shoulder planes, and their hands deep behind their trail shoulder at the top. Thousands of folks across the globe - including many seasoned, low-handicap, competitive players - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of learning this swing system through my online school, and I'm happy to let their unsolicited testimonials tell the story: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. Compare and contrast that with the sad reality that despite all the advances in equipment, technology, golf course grooming, etc. the average golfer still struggles to break 100. Epic failures within the realm of “conventional” instruction, perhaps??? So many misconstrued and/or misguided teachings - such as taking the club straight back, turning the shoulders level while independently lifting the arms, shifting into and torquing against a firm trail side, actively rolling the hands through impact, etc. - have relegated generations of golfers to the vast abyss of inconsistency and chronic frustration (and chronic back/knee/hip pain as well). I'm very glad to know that my instruction is resonating well with you! The net is a DIY job. It is approximately 7’ tall and 8’ wide. We used this video as a starting point - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--p11qs4E2T0.html - and then made some other minor PVC support structure modifications to suit our needs. We did not use PVC cement as this allows us to easily disassemble it if necessary. The netting we used is 10' x 10' golf cage impact net purchased from Amazon, and it differs from the screening material in the video. (By the way, if using a net like we did you probably won’t need the screw hooks that are mentioned in the video - bungees should suffice.) Also, I have a Real Feel 3x5 Country Club Elite® Golf Mat. I love the feel of it as well as its durability. You can visit them here - www.RealFeelGolfMats.com. If purchasing be sure to use coupon code "SAGUTOGOLF" (without the quotes and no spaces) at checkout to claim your special SagutoGolf discount on the Country Club Elite® series of mats. With stack and tilt, where do you position the ball since most of the weight is on your lead foot?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
While you do have some leeway, Greg, in general once my students and members show some level of proficiency with the swing I suggest that they migrate to a stock ball position that is in the middle of the stance for short irons, two balls inside the lead heel for middle irons, and creeping more forward for the longer clubs - the farthest forward being even with the inside of the lead heel for the driver (with the stance width increasing as we move from shorter to longer clubs). From there they can make incremental tweaks to see how different positions affect impact quality and shot shape. Tom

If you turned your shoulders 90 degrees while 1)keeping your head - and swing center - in place, and 2) maintaining your inclination to the ground that was pre-established at address, then yes - you would have tilted. You can also accomplish tilting by turning if you think of it in terms of Arnold Palmer's favorite tip - "point your lead shoulder at the ball." TS

Hi Robert, I was using JumboMax Ultralite grips in extra-large for much of 2022 and the first part of 2023, including in this video. I had wanted to give them a try for a few reasons, including the fact that DeChambeau uses them and we share similar swing philosophies. I personally love the feel as well as how they help to keep my hands quiet through the zone. Now, having said that, I recently purchased a new set of PXG's, and since they don't carry the Jumbo's in-house I went with their largest available grip, which is a midsize. I absolutely love the clubs, and I'm putting the factory grips through the playing test before deciding whether or not to have them regripped. There are no issues with the Jumbos and I still really like the way they feel; that's just where I'm at presently. The Jumbos are not necessarily for everyone - and my fingers are a bit longer than average - so I routinely tell folks to "try before you buy." However, having a properly sized grip that feels both comfortable and secure is critically important as it is our only connection to the object that is going to deliver us blissful joy or deep anguish, yet it is perhaps also the most overlooked equipment fitting component in golf. Having problems with toeing the ball , please advise if you can help.?
@SagutoGolf

There are various causes of toe hits, with the most common being related to setup (for example, the arms are not hanging down naturally and are in fact slightly reaching away from the body at address) or a downswing path that is coming from the outside and across the ball. Having said that, it's really not possible for me to diagnose the cause of your toe hits without actually seeing your swing. There are entire sections of my online school dedicated to resolving common swing, contact, and ball flight issues. Have you looked into it? Here's a link if you would like to know more about the school - saguto.golf Also, I do offer V1 Swing Video Analysis lessons as they are instrumental to the progress of my school's members, and these can be done for anyone from anywhere across the globe, school member or not. The process involves downloading the free V1 app and then submitting two videos to me through the app - one down-the-line (captured from your stance line, not the target line) and the other face-on. @pohoresky
@pohoresky Год назад
Hey- big thing about not turning your shoulders is misleading. Of course shoulders turn because the hips turn and rib cage turns. If you focus on turning shoulders you likely will not turn your hips or mid torso (rib cage) enough and that would be bad bad. So it is best not to focus on turning the shoulders but rather the sequence of turning the hips first then the rib cage and finally the shoulders will turn last of all but it is all done in a blur. If one thinks only of shoulder turn, you will lose the proper sequence of events resulting in a bad swing and that is the reason people say don't turn your shoulders. There is truth to that saying but is not the whole story. The shoulders will turn on their own if there is a proper hip and rib cage turn. Pretty hard not to turn the shoulders in this sequence.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
I certainly understand what you are saying, Harold. However, when one considers that the vast majority of amateurs do not turn sufficiently (if at all), any "advice" offered to reinforce this affliction - even if only in a misconstrued "click bait" video title - can serve to further exacerbate the issue. To your point, weight forward 55/45 (up to 60/40 with the longer clubs), both feet flared out approximately 20 degrees, and the knees similarly angled outward are prescribed setup features of the swing system I teach. This orientation provides for an unrestricted 45 degrees of tilted hip turn, at which point we only need to add another 45 degrees of shoulder turn for a full 90 degrees. The result is a centered, stress-free, flowing motion back and through. I do speak about this in other lesson videos, and it is a significant contributing factor as to why my online school members who are in their 60's, 70's, and 80's - i.e.: a smorgasbord of chronic ailments, physical limitations, back/shoulder/knee/hip pain, arthritis, and joint replacements - are overwhelmingly elated to experience the dramatic pain-free game improvement, seemingly effortless power, and resulting enjoyment that this swing affords them. Anyone looking for the perfect swing should watch Jim Furyk's swing. It shows you don't need to have the perfect swing to be a good golfer. You have to master your own and learn your own strengths and weaknesses. None of us are Tiger, great game management and a good short game will have you shooting low scores.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
I don't disagree with you, Richard, and the desperate quest for the "ideal swing" has cast many a golfer into the pit of chronic despair. I would suggest, however, that our own swing that we master ought to include the following three elements, which are the real fundamentals: 1. Hit the ground in the same spot every time (consistently crispy contact) 2. Have enough power to play the golf course well (distance) 3. Be able to have a predictable curve (accuracy). A player MUST be able to do these three non-negotiables in order to truly be good at golf. The swing system I teach - which is rooted in the unchanging truths of physics, geometry, and human physiology - provides a road map for accomplishing these fundamentals incredibly well in a low-maintenance and body-friendly manner, while allowing ample leeway for each golfer to infuse and exercise their own uniqueness. Now whether or not that uniqueness is to the extent of Jim Furyk's or not is up to the individual, but as I regularly say to folks, "let your ball striking and shot shape be your guide." 😎 Cheers! Tom

Is this true for Driver too?
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
Yes - This swing key also applies to the driver. In fact, it’s essentially the same swing with every club; just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. To demonstrate, you'll find towards the end of this episode some driving range footage of me hitting a 7 iron, 3 wood, and driver: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-o0xscMyN3v8.html Beyond that, if you search the word "drive" on this channel you'll see some related content. Upon learning this swing properly you will be harnessing the tremendous power source known as "angular momentum". This is the reason my students and online school members of all age ranges end up bombing it farther than they ever had previously. What do you think about Moe Normans golf swing .
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
Hi Steve, While the Stack and Tilt system I teach shares a one plane feature, it is definitely different from the "single plane" version patterned after Mr. Norman's swing. For example, the straight-line relationship of the arms and club shaft from the DTL view is a trademark of Mr. Norman's setup that one will not typically find in S&T instruction. However, there are also some definite shared features - particularly with regard to the very centered, connected, weight-forward nature of both methods. Stack and Tilt is a complete golf swing system based on data from the best golf ball strikers - and Moe Norman would certainly be included among them. The S&T folks determined, based on a study of these ball striking legends, that they all had 3 things in common (the 3 main golf fundamentals): 1. Hit the ground in the same spot every time (consistent crispy contact) 2. Have enough length to play the golf course well (power) 3. Be able to have a predictable curve (accuracy). A player MUST be able to do those 3 things to be good at golf, and Mr. Norman certainly did! TS

@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
My pleasure, Steve, and thanks for your kind words! Though it's not something I teach, I think if you go about it intelligently you can make a "hybrid" model work. You just have to be cognizant of the differences and what they mean. For example, in S&T having the arms hanging straight down with the club shaft extending outward is perhaps more facilitative of the prescribed up and down hinging/unhinging of the wrists. Also, consider the difference in shaft planes established at address. The stock S&T shaft plane is pre-oriented to create desired depth in the backswing so that we can maximize the tremendous force of angular momentum. The same can be accomplished with the Moe Norman setup, but be aware that the shaft angle may necessitate a lie adjustment to your clubs, and it will also affect the vertical plane in the swing and as such modify the "Grid" as it relates to shot shaping.

Wellllllllll.....you omitted the "mea maxima culpa", but your intent and contrition were apparent so I'll let it slide..... 😆😆 Now, for your "penance" - and if you've not already done so - please consider enrolling in the online school and taking your learning and your game to the next level. That's where - in addition to detailed lessons and drills that take you through the entire swing step-by-step, position-by-position from setup to finish - you'll find diagnostic tools for identifying/resolving swing and ball flight issues when they arise, plus advanced level instruction, and much more. Beyond that, it will make for a far more efficient, superior, and enjoyable learning process rather than haphazardly trying to piece things together through these channel videos that jump around randomly from topic to topic and may in turn have your head spinning in "circles".... 😎 Thousands of men and women from across the globe - including many accomplished, low-handicap, competitive players and spanning all age ranges from junior to super-senior - are now enjoying the best golf of their lives as a result of the school, and their unsolicited testimonials tell the story quite well: saguto.golf/p/sagutogolfreviews. At just $14.99/month or $149.99 per year the value in terms of what you get for that price point is beyond comprehension, and based on proven results it represents by far the best golf instruction deal on the planet. (In other words, it will fast track you to the front of the class...) And if you'd like to first "dip a toe in the water" prior to diving into the school, then here is a link to my FREE mini course “The Top 3 Things You Need to Be a Great Ball Striker”: go.saguto.golf/ That is where you can learn some key aspects of the swing system I teach in a more structured manner. It's all about shooting lower scores if you're going to make varsity, so as long as you are able to keep to ball in play with your full shots I would really focus on chipping, pitching, and putting. Commit to being the best in your school in those categories and you'll have a very good chance.

@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
You simply have to adopt the mindset that it is essentially the same swing with every club. There are just some minor setup differences and naturally occurring shaft plane changes as we graduate up in club length from short irons to woods. So when hitting a full wedge shot, simply treat it as you would another iron that you have confidence in and just let it go!

but, shoulder turn doesn't rotate the lower part of the body; and, if the lower part of the body doesn't turn, the swing will become top heavy; and, the body will lean to the right. the camera angle @2.30 shows how you turn the lower part of your body by directing force into your right right hip with right leg, when you activate the muscles down the left side of your leg, increasing its angle.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion by unlocking the hips for 45 degrees of unrestricted inclined turning. From there we only need another 45 degrees of shoulder turn to get a full 90. I've mentioned this on numerous occasions - it simply wasn't the main crux of this particular lesson. A salient point nonetheless. Thanks! TS
@DASH1ful
@DASH1ful Год назад
@@SagutoGolf well, yes. that is just it. when we activate the muscle down the left side of the right leg, at address, it cocks the head to the side; and, moves the right hip back, slightly. then, when we actively cock the head to the side, in the takeaway, it actually moves the right hip back, enabling us to turn freely. it, also, helps us to free up our backswing if swing with just one hand on the club, alternating hands. when we swing with both hands on the club, from cold, our arms can work against one another. when we do one handed drills, to warm up, the left side of the right forearm and the heel pad of the left hand develop the knack of working in tandem. when we swing with just the right arm we can feel the manubrium retracting away from the thorax. this enables the clavicle bone to glide along the rib, and direct force into the rib; which turns the shoulder. when we swing back and thru, with just the left hand on the club, we have to use the heel pad of the hand when we reach the point of propulsion; which stretches the arm out; and, stretches the left shoulder joint in its socket, increasing the shoulder turn.

You don't need the flexibility of a Romanian gymnast - or even of this far less pliable golf instructor - to execute this swing and experience great ball striking. It all begins with a proper setup which provides for a free-flowing motion. Clearly this dude never heard of Moe Norman's Single Plane Swing.
@SagutoGolf
@SagutoGolf Год назад
Clearly this dude has. While the Stack and Tilt system I teach shares a one plane feature, it is definitely different from the "single plane" version patterned after Mr. Cheers, Tom

A quick RU-vid search reveals tons of videos with the title "Don't Turn Your Shoulders in the Golf Swing". I explain at 5:04 why someone might teach you to feel "not turning" your shoulders which is what other coaches may be teaching to their students. One of my duties as an instructor is to help my students (and RU-vid subs) interpret things correctly so that they can improve. In the literal sense, if someone didn't turn their shoulders, they couldn't make a golf swing. This video helps them to understand that. But, you could teach the feeling "Don't Turn Your Shoulders" if someone turns too much and too level (as shown at 5:04).
@Not.Satoshi

@@SagutoGolf yes, I did catch your demonstration at 5:04 which was spot on for the player it would benefit. I just did the search and I was surprised how many videos were titled “Don’t turn Shoulders”. I know of Montes No Turn, Cast which he emphatically emphasizes it’s a feel and Dr Kwon who stresses to a lot of his students to not intentionally turn; rather, let the hips turn the shoulders. But I concede, there are a lot of click bait titles, “Don’t turn shoulders” and I now understand the value you are providing. Thank you Tom!

@SagutoGolf Год назад
Hi Roger, The "stacked" feature of the S&T system relates both to how the knees, hips, and shoulders are in a stacked relationship at setup, and it also defines the way that the dynamic tilting, flexing, and extending actions of the spine keep the golfer stacked with their upper body center remaining in one place throughout the motion.
