A young woman tries to overcome her OCD.
DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT is used with permission from Melissa Kong. Learn more at / dontworryaboutitshort .
Hannah is in intensive therapy for debilitating contamination obsessive-compulsive disorder, which has affected her life and relationships, especially after the recent death of her father. Her therapist gives her a series of exercises as part of her treatment. As Hannah works her way through these, she becomes part of the clinic's community, even helping others with their exercises.
When her latest exercise involves eating a cookie left on a toilet seat, it's a step too far for Hannah. But to move forward in the treatment and confront her OCD, Hannah must complete it -- as well as deal with the grief and guilt she feels over her father's death.
Directed and written by Melissa Kong, this dramedy short is a finely tuned balancing act of tone, blending sincerity, humor and somber reflection as it traces the efforts of Hannah to get through her treatment for a misunderstood condition. OCD is often portrayed as a collection of tics or behaviors that look odd on the surface, but the short delves into the complexity of it with a disarming blend of comedy and heart.
Excellently written with a restrained, straightforward visual approach that puts the focus on performances and dialogue, the storytelling finds bleakly comic moments in the absurdity of some of the therapy exercises portrayed in the storytelling, both for Hannah and the other patients at the treatment center. By taking the time to construct the wider community of the clinic, we see the different ways that OCD can express itself, from intrusive and persistent thoughts about sex to Hannah's manifestation, which is an aversion to touching people and objects that could "contaminate" her with germs.
There's a lightness in the first half of the film as it establishes character and milieu, and in a less sensitive, empathetic film, it would be all too easy to keep portraying the clinic and its patients as overly quirky. But as Hannah's story deepens, we understand the very serious costs that having OCD can have on life and relationships. For Hannah, it curtailed a key moment between her and her father before his passing. Actor Hanah Chang is dry, droll and witty as Hannah as she navigates the series of seemingly silly therapy exercises, but when she confronts her regrets about her father's death, she is deeply moving, and the depth of her performance helps the film to achieve considerable empathy and resonance.
Based on the director's personal experiences, DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT has authenticity and authority in its accurate portrayal of OCD. But it's also a powerful portrait of grief and fear, and how they can hold us back in life if we don't examine them. Hannah learns that she must face her pain and suffering over the events in her life, which helps her confront how insidiously OCD has intruded upon her autonomy and her relationships. That insight gives her the power to face her fear and move beyond it -- even if it's in the shape of a cookie in a place where no one should be eating.

Ok... I have ocd and my dad died just under a year ago. I wasn't expecting this to be this relatable. I just wanted to watch a short film to start my day and now look at me. Crying before work. Great job!

you capture pretty well the constant facing the fact of being your own unreliable narrator, knowing forcibly something isn't real even when it truly feels true. did you write this? do you know someone with ocd or have yourself?

My husband and 2 of my daughters have OCD with intrusive thoughts, my middle daughter being the one with compulsions...I appreciate this short so very much. They all work so hard just to feel "normal" and I'm so proud of the progress they've made. I love them all and I wouldn't trade my little family for anything in the world.

If you notice, when the lady goes in to pick up the cookie off the seat she blocks out the act of picking up and then the camera angle changes before she puts it in her mouth. Plenty of chances for the ole switcharoo. I really doubt she ate the cookie that was on the toilet seat. And FWIW I wouldn't have either.

There's a truth to when she said that toilet could be much cleaner than doorknobs. For example, it's proven that phones are dirtier than toilet seats. "In most cases, it's safer to make a salad on a toilet seat than it is to make one on a cutting board,"

Excelent!! Loved it. I have general anxiety disorder, that lead into an agoraphobia. I've been wrestling with it my entire life. Its actually pretty diferent than an OCD, because of the realistic feeling of dying mainly. But anyhow, exposure is the only way. Just regret that my life is going to pass by and i wont be able to have overcomed from this. I wanna see the world, travel, im adventorous, but im draged down by this enormous power that controls my body. Wish all of whom are going through something similar, the best of succes!!

I'm going to get evaluated for ocd. I've had it all my life i think, pretty much. I could live with my compulsive hand washing, but I've started having intrusive thoughts about a bad relationship from my youth. Its driving me nuts. I hadn't thought about it in years, and there isn't really a need to think about it. A neurologist gave me a referral to get checked for ocd before the pandemic but I blew it off, I went in for a tic disorder I developed about four or five years ago.

The pandemic really kicked me more into my agoraphobia and made it worse when I was hospitalized due to covid..just moved, and my kids are now helping me slowly get out in my new small town. I'm glad to have them and their slow and respectful guidance. I'm working on it..stressful finding new doctors though..ugh but I'll get there..💙🌎 Sure is easy to blow things off, but I'll get it together ❤️

@iguanazilla

Exposure is doing something that triggers you in small steps until your anxiety from being exposed to it goes from a 10 (high) to a level that is more manageable ( 1 or 2). Eventually being able to overcome that compulsion/ fear.

Wow, just wow. As an AAPI woman with OCD and whose father passed away, I SO MUCH related to this story because it IS my story. I've struggled with Pure OCD for over a decade. I wish films like this existed when I had no idea what was going on with me, but I knew I needed help. I'm thankful that apps like NOCD exist where there is a community full of people with OCD who can relate to each other and therapists who are trained in ERP. @melissakong142 Thank you for creating a film like this that brings awareness to OCD and realities of Exposure Response Prevention therapy. And kudos to the main actor! We need to see more AAPI representation on screen!
