If you want to play along with the recording you need barre chords because it is in the key of B. I recommend you Ukulele players out there to try to expand you skills a little bit and substitute the C for a B, the Dm for a C#m and the F for an E and bam, you can play along with it. If you have a capo throw it on the fourth fret and you can use the G, Am and C chords and play in the key of B as wells. Cheers and happy strumming.
suzette roberts I’m not saying don’t do this, I’m saying after you get the hang out it try and expand your skills. This is a great tutorial and John is a great teacher. I transpose a lot of my tutorials up or down a half step to make them easier as well. Still when you work hard at something and then you turn the song on and play with it it is good to know why it doesn’t sound good with the song. Not quite sure why that would make you so hostile. Try and lighten up a little bit.
@TenThumbs productions you are right. After getting the hang of it playing at C scale we can start playing at B scale in order to better our skills! I am also a beginner.

No matter how hard I freaking try I can never strum 😤 like I'm good with changing the notes and learning the chords but I can't strum and it irritating me... Grrrr
Try relax ur fingers and then use the tips of your knuckles to strum and you fingers and thumb (use more of your thumb) if you still struggle, pretend you are holding a pick
I suggest you play the strumming part at 0.75 or even 0.5 speed it makes understanding the pattern so much easier. Basically its dD /ud/uD/u the capital letter means he's strumming harder

it sounds like you do chucking somewhere as you are playing, because when i strum without any trick, it doesn't sound right at all. can you tell what you are doing as you strum?
I would like to learn the song "Someone New" by Hozier. The song sounds like it could be played with some parts being picked and other parts being strummed. These are the kinds of songs I enjoy playing the most.
Mr. Ukulele Teacher thank you so much for your help in learning the Ukulele. I am progressing nicely. I would appreciate and I think many of us would, if you could explain the rhythm for this strum you use. The pattern is quite easy with some practice but the rhythm you use in the video is not just a simple (D,D,U,D,U,D,U) it is more complex with soft and harder strums and sounds like a delay when you raise your hand higher for a harder strum. Please help resolve this question many of us are facing as a problem to learning the song. Thank you
+DC Richi Maybe you can play the video at 0.5 speed to hear the pattern better. I think the pattern would be d - D-u-d-u-D-u (the capitalized d's have a harder strum)

I just can't get to grips with this strumming pattern. I'm doing D D/U D/U D/U but it just doesn't sound the same. Yours is loose and lilting. Mine sounds stiff and forced :-(

Hey Uketeacher, many of my guitar and ukulele pupils think that "Don't worry be happy" is the title of "Three little birds" song by Bob Marley haha! So nice to hear from you that this song isn't a Marley one :D so people will understand... And congrats, nice channel, very awesome classes, I inspire from you to teach better ;) And most of my pupils follow you, too!
So I am fine with the chords - but I struggle with staying on rhythm through out - basically I loose track of my Down DownUp DownUp DownUps! Any advice?
Rachel Sybor Practise over and over and over and over and over until your brain clicks on to the rhythm. Your brain needs to be able to just automatically do it without you consciously thinking about it so you can focus on singing. Do it really slowly to start with if your hand keeps tripping over itself, and you can mute the strings by resting your fretting hand over them so you can focus just on the rhythm.
I know its been 2 years since you commented this, but i struggled with this too. I'm able to do a Dmin by spreading my two fingers to the brinks of that fret. Middle finger is pretty much almost on fret 1, ring finger almost on fret 3- but both definitely still in 2. It gives me the room i need to be comfortable while still keeping the same sound. Really only commenting on here incase anyone else comes by struggling with the same issue cause this was a goldmine of a find for me.

Loved it ! I am just starting out, wanting to show some great grandchildren a couple cords to help them start out. I play Dulcimer a little so this is different but really enjoying it.The Mom played an electric guitar when a teen as her brothers also did and am sure she should be able to help them out. I will share your You Tubes with her for sure!
I bought a uke yesterday after playing once years ago in 2nd grade. I can play loads of fun songs including the spongebob fun song and I could not do that without these videos. I think a song you should teach is the one from mocking jay part, are you coming to the tree (sad song might be hard for such a happy instrument), or All together now by the Beatles.
